Another Foster (Private)

[Shy-Diapers]

Sarah raised her eyebrows. “Honey you know how to dress yourself.” She said with a sigh. She helped her get dressed nonetheless, planning on talking to Alex about her behavior later. “Pick out your book then I’ll brush your hair.”

Without missing a beat, Kaley went to look for the book from last night. “Mouse!” She declared, holding the chosen book up to Alex. She smiled and climbed into her bed, laying down with her mouse and quilt, looking up at Alex happily.

Rocky picked a big book about dinosaurs and waited for Sarah to do her hair. While Sarah untangled her curls she flipped through the book to find her favorite dinosaur, stegosaurus.

Alex sat next to Kaley and read the book, happy to see her in a good mood. He finished the book and checked to see if she was asleep.

Sarah used the comb to untangle her daughter’s curls and made sure it was adequately dry. “Okay get into bed.” She said with a smile. She sat on the edge of the bed and read the girl’s book to her. Once the book was over and Rocky was asleep, she left the room quietly and flipped the light off. She headed downstairs to wait for Alex. 
 

Kaley was fast asleep by the time the book was over, clutching her mouse while she slept peacefully.

Alex tucked Kaley in and went downstairs, relieved that at least bedtime had gone smoothly.

“Hey, we need to talk about Rocky.” Sarah said with a sigh when she saw her husband. “She won’t use her words at all and won’t do anything for herself.” She rubbed her temples as she explained. “I’m worried she’s starting to regress developmentally. Maybe we should have the child psychologist see her too.”

"Or maybe she's just looking for attention," Alex suggested. "Let's give it a few days before we get too worked up about it. Worse comes to worst, we'll tell her she can't go to the game if she can't talk and act like a big girl. Maybe that will straighten her out."

“I don’t think anything good will come of keeping her from going to the game. Plus Sophia is going too. It wouldn’t be fair to her.” Sarah countered. “But you’re right, I’ll try not to worry too much.” She said with a sigh. She finished cleaning the kitchen before she headed upstairs for bed.

"She'll give in," Alex suspected. "Probably long before Sunday afternoon. You know how much she talks, she can't possibly be quiet that long." He went to his office area to work for an hour or so before heading upstairs himself.

The next morning, Sarah woke up as usual, heading downstairs to make breakfast for the family. 
 

Kaley woke up the next morning from another nightmare. She felt tears in her eyes and on her face as she looked around, quickly realizing  she was wet she panicked. But then she remembered how Alex had helped clean her up every morning since she arrived. She decided she didn’t need to hide, but still didn’t know what to do since she didn’t know where he was, so she sat there, frozen and stuck.

Alex did his normal morning workout, took a quick shower, and checked on Kaley. He was pleased to see she wasn't hiding this time. "Hey, sweetie, did you sleep well? Ready to get dressed?" he asked, assuming she was wet as usual.

Rocky woke up and bounded downstairs, almost forgetting her plan. She was about to ask what was for breakfast before remembering and quickly shut her mouth, quietly taking her seat instead.

Kaley sniffled and reached up for Alex. She was pretty accustomed to nightmares every night, but last night shook her up more than usual for whatever reason. She tried her best to wipe the tears from her eyes, not wanting to get in trouble for being upset so early.  
 

Sarah served up some eggs, toast and sausage. Seeing Rocky at the table she took a deep breath, trying not to worry. She plated her up some food and went to the fridge. “What do you want to drink kiddo?”

Rocky went to the fridge, selected a bottle of lemonade, and handed it to Sarah before returning to her seat.

Alex sat down and pulled Kaley onto his lap, offering her the tablet. "You want to tell me what's wrong?" He asked as he cuddled her.

Sarah poured the girl some lemonade and returned the bottle to the fridge. “You can go ahead and eat.” She said unsure where Alex and Kaley were. 
 

Kaley shook her head. She didn’t know how to even talk about nightmares. It wasn’t something she was able to talk to her father about. She scrolled through the images on the tablet before clicking “clean”. She hugged Alex right afterwards, just wanting him close and to get cleaned up, being in a wet diaper wasn’t helping her feel any better.

Since no one seemed overly concerned about her not talking, Rocky decided to take it a step further. Eschewing silverware, she picked up a sausage with her hand and started nibbling on it.

Alex cleaned Kaley up and got her dressed in shorts and a t-shirt since they didn't have plans to go anywhere. He figured he could take the girls outside and let them play in the yard. Once she was ready he carried her downstairs and sat her at the table. "You want milk, or juice?"

“Rocky! Use your fork!” Sarah scolded lightly, mostly out of surprise. “You know better than to use your hands like that.”

Kaley happily started eating the eggs on her plate. She was eating quickly, though she wasn’t scarfing it down for once. Using the tablet, she pressed “juice”. When Alex brought it to her as requested she smiled and continued to eat. Once her eggs were gone, she hesitantly took a bite of the sausage. She wasn’t too sure if she liked it.

Alex got her some juice and sat down. It soon became clear she wasn't a big fan of the sausage. "You don't have to eat that. Would you like more eggs, or something else?" he offered, not wanting her to be hungry or feel like she had to eat something just because it was on her plate.

Rocky was secretly pleased when Sarah reacted, but ignored her. Now she wanted to see how far she could go before Sarah got mad. She finished the sausage and reached for another one.

Kaley pointed to her plate where the eggs had been and looked up at Alex. She smiled when he got her more and ate those at an even more reasonable pace, pushing the sausage to the side of her plate. 
 

“Raquel!” Sarah scolded. “You don’t grab food after having just eaten with your hands.” She grabbed the plate of sausage and moved it out of reach of the girl. “You can ask nicely for someone to get you more, or you can use the fork on the sausage plate to put it on yours. What has gotten into you today?” She shook her head and gave her daughter two more sausage for the time being but left the plate out of reach.

Pleased that she had gotten a rise out of her mother, Rocky wiped her hands, picked up her fork, and started eating as if nothing out of the ordinary had occurred.

Alex beamed at Kaley. "Good girl. I like how you're eating so nicely!" he praised as he ignored Rocky, determined not to reward her with any sort of attention for bad behavior.

Sarah shook her head and focused on her own breakfast. “Did we get Kaley a swimsuit?” She asked curiously, hoping to make conversation. “We should get the splash pad out sometime for the girls.”

“Good girl!” Kaley parroted, beaming when Alex praised her, she wasn’t used to getting told nice things about her so they made her feel so good when she did. When she finished her juice she sat looking around contently.

"No, I didn't think about that. Rocky should still be able to squeeze into her old one for now, and Kaley can wear her new one until we get her one," Alex suggested. Kaley was taller and longer through the torso than Rocky, but the new suit was a two-piece so he figured it would fit okay. "Yes," he said, turning back to Kaley, "you are a very good girl."

Rocky scowled. Here she was, eating nicely with her fork like Sarah wanted, and no one told her she was good.

“It doesn’t have to be today. Kaley can also just wear some clothes if she doesn’t mind.” Sarah shrugged. “It was just a random thought. Any plans for today?” She asked, hoping to have a smooth and easy day especially with Kaley’s visit the next day and the soccer game the day after that. 

Kaley smiled when Alex repeated that she was good. “Cat?” She asked hopefully, wanting to get down and play already.

Alex wiped Kaley's face and hands and let her go off to play. "I didn't plan anything, I just figured it was a good day for the kids to play outside. The splash pad is a good idea."

Sarah nodded and went to clean up the kitchen. “I’ll get it set up after Rocky finishes eating.”

Kaley hopped down and went upstairs to get the cats from her room before she came back down and sat in front of her house, happily arranging them and moving her mice and cats around the house.

Rocky quickly finished eating and hurried upstairs to find her swimsuit. She hadn't even had a chance to wear it yet, no way was she letting Kaley borrow it!

Alex sat next to Kaley. "How would you like to go outside and play in the water? It's a nice day." He hoped she would be agreeable, as he was getting a little tired of hanging out inside and didn't want it to become a habit all summer.

Once Rocky headed upstairs, Sarah put her hair up and got the splash pad out from the garage. She laid it out and attached the hose, letting it get going while the kids got ready. 
 

Kaley looked nervous when Alex mentioned playing in the water. She looked for the tablet and once it was brought to her she anxiously looked through the pictures. “No” she tapped before searching and tapping “swim”. She quickly shook her head to reaffirm what she said. She was happy to play outside, but was petrified of the thought of swimming or playing in the water.
