The Stand: A different take

The small town that was nestled in the Rocky Mountains in the southern part of Wyoming, called Elk Mountain was covered in snow about eight or nine months out of the year.  The local high school had a graduating class of no more than 30 students most years.  However, the mountains were also a very popular place to go skiing and to go camping in what little spring-summer time that this small town had seen.

It was about the middle of June, when a particular girl got an answer back after taking a year off from school altogether to relax, and she was accepted at the University in the same state, about 2 hours away by car.

In these mountains, though, where so many liked to camp and waste the summer away near a lake, there were strange things that were starting to happen.

Jamilla was always the smart girl in her class.  She graduated with honors and was considered for validitorian.  She came from a poor family and her life quickly led her on a path of success that left her family behind.  Not because she wanted to, but moreso because they weren't of intelligence on her level.  Continuing the path of success, Jamilla continue being outgoing and soon met up with a group from her high school that wanted to go camping.  She was all about the social life and decided to join the group in a huge collective of campers.  However, on her third day at camp, she suffered something she hadn't experienced in over 15 years, .........an accident.  She was waiting in line and struggling to hold it, she got to the front of the line and began to leak........bad.   she looked behind her but the girls seemed oblivious.  As she stepped into the portopotty, she started to loose it all.  She did not give in, she quickly pulled her Jean shorts down and hovered over the hole I'm the middle of the seat.  She pissed through her underwear as hard and fast as she could.  "oh my God" she thought to herself.  She hadn't had even the slightest of an accident in years, this was  tough.  She wiped herself and her pants but eventually had to rejoin and hoped no one would notice.  She made it through the night thinking poorly of herself but hoping it was an isolated incident.

Even though she stepped out of the portapotties all wet, no one mentioned that they noticed it.

The girls were mostly grown up by now enough that little things like long lines leading to wet pants didn't really interest them that much.  However, something was going to happen that night that would change everything for the camping group.

By morning, four boys were found dead for no apparent reason in their tents.  Four girls were weak and were unable to make any sense.  The campers that were still aware of who they were and what happened claimed not to have noticed anything.

The girls that were struck dumb somehow, unable to talk, unable to realize where they were, and who were lying in soaked beds were taken to a hospital.

Eventually, When Jamilla woke up from her nightmare in her head, it was about two years later, and she was in a bed in a ward that cared for people who had nervous breakdowns.  She was wearing a diaper that was currently soaked in pee, and the clock near her bed read that it was 5 in the morning.

Deeply confused, Jamilla looked around at her surroundings, hearing beeps and other monitor noises.  She felt around her own bum and it was warm and wet.  "What the...." she didn't understand where she was or what was happening.  She began to stand up.

Looking around, the room was pretty dark, her eyes only barely able to see that there were curtained spaces for six patients, most of them still in a coma or something.

When she tried to get out of bed, she also noticed she was hooked up to machines, too.  There was a machine that was feeding her liquids and medicine that went into her left arm.  There was a machine with wires attached to her head, that measured brain activity.  And there was a machine that was connected to the forefinger of her right hand by nothing but a clamp, the easiest to remove, that measured heartrate.

The point being, that it was almost impossible to get out of bed without trying to remove some of the stuff.  It wasn't that hard to remove the finger clip.  The liquid feeding machine was trickier, but she could removed the tube that went into the IV injection in her arm, if she was careful.  The brain wires, however, would prove to be the most difficult and probably impossible without hurting herself.

What was more, the moment her feet touched the floor, if she did get around the rails on her bed, there was a mat that would alert doctors that someone had fallen out of bed or stepped very close to her bed.  So, of course, a nurse would come running in to see that she was okay.

She hadn't been on her feet in a long while so she had lost all muscle control and couldn't stand on her own.  She began just putting a foot down and realized some of the wires wouldn't go so far.  She began pulling things out in a panic.  Just the tight ones so she could get to her feet, but her legs couldn't hold her and she fell immediately to the ground, pulling our more wires on her way down. Worse, when she landed she wasn't sure why or what happened, she got real dissy and the back of her diaper began to get warm with a new sort of lava sensation.

The nurse came in, and she gasped in surprise at seeing a patient out of bed, several things having been taken out of her body, and two wires ripped from her head.

She ran over and pressed the call button and asked for assistance from more nurses.

She then squatted down to the little lady, and she reached out to touch her hand.

"I know you're confused," she told her.  "But you really shouldn't try getting out of bed when you are in a hospital room until you know where you are and what is going on," she said as slowly and soothingly as she could.  "You might have hurt yourself.  I'm hoping not."

She had not yet noticed the girl had pooped her pants/diaper yet.  That was the least of the worries that plagued the nurse about the wires coming out of the girl's body before they were ready.

A doctor and two more nurses came in.

The four of them first checked that the girl was not hurt badly, then lifted her back to her bed and put the rail back in place.

"I'm doctor Sanford," the man told the girl.  "I've been in charge of your care for the last... um..." he trailed off not wanting to alarm her, but the newest nurse didn't seem to know why he stopped short and thought he was trying to remember.

"Two years," the new nurse said.

The doctor gave her a dirty look.

Then he turned back to the girl.

"Anyway, it is not wise for you to be moving about just yet.  We need to get you some therapy first, and some muscle strengthening food so you can learn to walk again.  After that, I'll need to ask you some questions about what happened on your camping trip."

He patted her arm.

"But we can talk about the camping trip later.  For now, we just need to start with a good diet to build up your muscles again.  I hope you are hungry for breakfast."

"Honey," the doctor said to her slowly thinking she still didn't realize where she was or what happened.  "You've been on fluids and a feeding machine for the last two years.  While the foods you got from them kept you alive, they were not the best in keeping your muscle tone up or your other processes that give you strength so you can walk, lift, and what not."

He sat on the edge of her bed, and held out his hands to her.

"Jamilla, something happened at you two summers ago when you went camping.  We haven't figured out what exactly because the boys that went with your group are all dead, and the girls are all in the same condition we found you in.  You are the first to wake up."

He sighed.

"Now, do you remember anything about what happened at camp?  Do you know what attacked your camp or what caused you to go become almost non-responsive for the last two years?"

"N.......no, what?  When?  Everything was fine." She was starting to become aware of her surroundings a little.  She noticed she was in what she assumed was a hospital.  There was a bunch of people staring at her.  She also became aware that nothing good was happening below her waist.  'what the....' she thought but all she could do was lay there and she didn't say anything about the diaper even though she figured someone would notice.
