boy ricky
Be careful with those diapers A health department is looking into the possibility that chlorine-soaked rags were thrown out in a diaper pail and came in contact with the ammonia that forms from urine. The mixture may have caused a chemical reaction that lead to several people getting sick. I guess that means we ought to be a lil more careful about what we throw out with our diapers. No cleaning agents or rags. Link to comment
mogumbo
Actually combining chlorine and ammonia is deadly. The combination forms a new chemical (the name escapes me.) Mo Link to comment
WallaWalla
Actually, it's bleach and ammonia that makes chlorine. Bleach = NaOCl = 1 atom of sodium, 1 atom of oxygen, and 1 atom of chlorine Ammonia = NH3 = 1 atom of nitrogen, 3 atoms of hydrogen 2 parts bleach + two parts ammonia = 2NaONH3, and the chlorine itself sheds off, becoming a gas again, free to scar lungs and rust metal once again! Mo Chlorine gas isn't deadly in the concentrations you will produce from diapers...you can smell it and choke on it, so it has good warning properties...why do you think they use Chlorine in swimming pools? However, another reaction product, Chloramine, doesn't smell like anything, and produces lung damage with people unaware it is happening...that's deadly... Link to comment
