Learning To Use The Potty (private for Carrie96 and me)

James looked at Sharon nervously, not wanting to admit that he had pee-peed.

"You're not in trouble, sweetheart, I know you didn't realize you had to potty in time to make it to the bathroom, but you know you're supposed to tell Mommy when you're wet."

"Not wet," James mumbled, embarrassed about pee-peeing in his pull-up.

"Come here, then, and let Mommy check your pants."

"Noooo," James whimpered.

[Carrie96]

"Honey, you're not in trouble. But, I think your pull-up is wet, so I need to change you. I know it feels icky and uncomfortable. Come here, let Mommy see."

James walked slowly over to Sharon.

"I know, honey. It's okay." Sharon picked him up and kissed his cheek. "Let's go get you changed."

Over the next couple of months, James got much better about using the potty, and he was down to having three or

Sharon decided he was doing too well to keep wearing pull-ups at home, so she started putting him in thick cloth training pants during the day. If he had an accident, his pants would get wet, but she likely wouldn't have much of a puddle to clean up.

James looked uncertainly down at his thick training pants the first morning Sharon put them on him.

Sharon picked up on his apprehension. "Honey, don't worry. These are just another step closer to wearing big-boy pants. You get to wear them because you've been doing so good with using the potty. I know you'll still have accidents, and as long as you're trying to make it to the potty first, then that's okay."

Sharon hoped that the added pressure of knowing his pants would get wet if he didn't pay attention and went in his pants would bring the accident tally down even more. She slipped a pair of shorts on him that he could easily get up and down by himself.

"If you pee-pee in your pants, then your trainers and shorts are going to get all wet and yucky. They won't keep your clothes dry like your pull-ups did. When you have to pee-pee, then either go by yourself or ask Mommy to take you, okay?"

James nodded and reached for Sharon to pick him up.

"Let's go eat breakfast, sweet boy."

After breakfast, Sharon took James to his play room so she could work while he played.

Sharon recognized the situation immediately. "Uh-oh, honey, let's try to get the rest in the potty." She grabbed his hand and rushed him to the bathroom, then hurriedly pulled his shorts and training pants down for him before helping him onto the toilet.

James cried as he continued to pee and poop on the potty.

Sharon choked back a laugh. "I know, sweetheart, that was one of your sneaky poops, wasn't it? I know you didn't potty in your pants on purpose. It's okay."

When James was finished, Sharon wiped him and dumped the contents of his training pants into the toilet. She noticed that they were a little damp, but his shorts were still dry, so she put him in a new pair of training pants and put the same shorts back on him after taking care of the soiled ones.

James nodded and went back to his toys.

"Oh, my, I guess you are! Mommy forgot to give you something to drink after your nap, didn't I?" Sharon gave him a sippy cup and went back to her work.

James gratefully accepted his cup and thirstily drank from it.

An hour later, Paul came home from work.

"Remember to tell Daddy when you have to go potty," Sharon reminded James. She went to the kitchen to start dinner while Paul took James outside.

James nodded absently, too excited about going outside with Daddy to think about the potty.

Hearing the commotion, Sharon looked out the back door. James's legs were squeezed together, and he was holding himself for dear life. She knew he was mere seconds away from wetting his pants.
