"I'll tell you what. You can still wear pull-ups when we go out for a little while longer, but then you'll have to wear training pants after that. You're a big boy, and you have to learn to tell Mommy or Daddy when you need to potty while we're out," Sharon said, sensing his reluctance. One morning when Sharon got up with James, she got a pair of his big-boy underwear to put on him instead of his cloth training pants. He'd had the same pattern with occasional accidents for several weeks, now, and she thought the added pressure of being in big-boy pants would help help him through the plateau he'd seemed to come to with potty-training and help reduce the number of accidents. "Good boy." Sharon helped him wash his hands and took him to the kitchen for a snack. When he was finished, she settled in the chair in the living room with him and his sippy cup to watch a movie. He still seemed tired from playing at the lake that morning and all day the day before. "Remember to pay attention to when you have to go potty. "I'll still take you to the potty before and after naps, when you wake up in the morning, before bed, and before we get in the car, but I'll also expect you to start remembering to do that on your own. I also won't remind you to go at other times if you haven't been in a while or if you look like you need to potty. Even if I can tell you're about to wet your pants, I'm not going to remind you to go. You'll have to remember to go on your own. Also, you'll wear training pants for naps and when we leave the house, so if we're out and you pee-pee in your pants, your clothes will get wet. You'll still wear diapers at night, though." Sharon got up and got a clean pair of training pants and an outfit for James, but then remembered his request to wear big-boy pants the day before. "Do you still want to try big-boy underwear today?" Sharon woke up when she felt James stirring. She'd put him straight down for his nap when they got home after thirty minutes in the car without taking him to the potty, so she was sure he had wet himself during his nap. "I guess we should start lunch, since the men have had the boys all morning," Anna said, when the boys had been in the water for a couple of hours. "God, I needed that. Toddlers and hangovers do not mix." "No, they certainly do not. It's also been nice not being constantly worried that James is going to have an accident." Sharon put the potty-victimized laundry in the washing machine while Anna made mimosas and joined her on the porch. Breakfast and the Tylenol had helped her headache, and a mimosa sounded great. Anna played music from her phone, and they chatted as they watched their husbands play in the lake with their sons.

"Why don't you guys stay for a while?" Anna suggested as they ate breakfast. "John and Paul can take the boys down to the water, and you and I can make mimosas and recuperate," she said to Sharon. "We can let the boys tire themselves out, eat an early lunch, and by the time you get home, James will be ready for a long nap. That will also give you time to wash James's clothes so you can take them home clean."

James's training pants had absorbed most of his accident, and only a little bit had gotten on Sharon, so the blanket and chair were unscathed. Sharon went to their room to rinse her clothes out and to change into what she'd worn the day before. One thing she had definitely learned from potty-training was that James wasn't the only one who required extra "just in case" clothes when they left the house. Once she was dressed, she joined Anna, John, and Carter in the kitchen for breakfast and a much-needed cup of coffee. "I'm sorry, you guys. We'll eat breakfast and get out of here before James can pee on anything else. The blanket and chair are still dry, though." "Oh, please," Anna answered. "There's nothing in this house that hasn't already been pottied on by either Carter or my nephew. He can't hurt anything." She got some Tylenol from a cabinet as Sharon poured a mug of coffee. "I certainly needed it this morning, and I'm guessing you do, too," she said as she tossed the bottle to Sharon. "Yeah, drinking two bottles of wine between us probably wasn't the best idea last night." Sharon took the pills and made a plate of breakfast. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
