Learning To Use The Potty (private for Carrie96 and me)

Sharon kissed his cheek. "I know you'll still have accidents sometimes, and that's not a big deal. But you should be making it to the potty most of the time. I'll be working while you guys play, but call for me if you need me. And when you have to go potty, it's right there. You don't have to ask. Just go when you need to." Sharon got sippy cups of watered-down juice for both boys before she started working.

Since James was wearing training pants and knew his clothes would get wet if he didn't make it to the potty, he was extra careful about paying attention to whether he needed to go pee-pee.

After working for a while, Sharon got up to check on the boys. She heard the now-familiar sound of pee-pee hitting the floor before she even reached the play room. Her heart sank when she went in and found a teary-eyed Carter, still holding his crotch as a dark stain spread across the front of his shorts and pee-pee streamed down his legs and pooled around his feet. "Uh-oh, honey, you had an accident." She got some wet wipes and cleaned his hands, legs, and the bottom of his feet. The poor child had soaked himself. "You need a quick bath. Let's get you cleaned up really quick."

"I sorry, Miss Sharon, I didn't mean to pee-pee!

Sharon gave James a warning look before he could say anything. "I'm not angry, sweetheart, I know you didn't do it on purpose. Just try to pay attention and go potty before you have to pee-pee so badly that it's hard to hold it. If James is in the closest bathroom, then go to another one, okay? If you don't wait until it's an emergency before you go potty, then you can hold it long enough to get to another bathroom." Sharon wiped up Carter's puddle on the floor with wet wipes so James wouldn't step in it, took Carter's hand, and led him to the bathroom.

"I know, buddy, but I need to make sure you're clean. You don't want to smell like pee-pee, do you?" Sharon started the bath water and peeled Carter's wet shorts and underwear off of him before pulling his shirt over his head and setting him in the bath tub. She got some clean underwear and shorts from his bag while his bath filled up.

Carter sat still and let Sharon bathe him.

Once Carter was clean again, Sharon dried him off and put one of his extra outfits on him. "All better, honey. Go play with James." Sharon did a better cleaning job on the pee spot in the play room and rinsed Carter's pee-soaked clothes out before getting back to work.

James gave Carter a sympathetic look when he came back, but didn't comment on his changed clothes, and they went back to playing.

After working for a couple more hours, Sharon made lunch for herself and the boys and went to get them from the playroom. The first thing she noticed was the dark stain across the front of Carter's shorts. There was a tell-tale pee puddle not far from where he was. "James, honey, let's go wash your hands for lunch. Stay here, Carter, I'll be right back," Sharon said, not wanting to embarrass him. Sharon got James settled with his lunch and came back to Carter.

"Honey, why didn't you come tell me you wet your pants?" She asked softly, kneeling beside him.

Carter shrugged.

Sharon got him cleaned up, rinsed out his wet clothes, and took him to the kitchen. "You won't be in trouble, but you need to tell me if you have another accident, okay? You don't need to sit in wet clothes for too long." She cleaned up his accident while the boys ate.

After playing all morning, both boys were yawning by the time lunch was over.

Once they were finished eating, Sharon got James to try to potty and put a diaper on him. He didn't often wet during his nap, and a pull-up would be enough for when he did, but she thought a wet diaper would probably be more comfortable than a wet pull-up. Once James was ready, she got Carter to try to use the potty, but it hadn't been long enough since he'd wet his pants for him to be able to go again. "Carter, you had a lot of juice this morning, and you might sleep longer than usual, so I'm going to put a pull-up on you, okay?"

Sharon tucked both boys into James's bed and sat with them until they were asleep.

After playing all morning, James and Carter both slept for almost three hours.

Sharon came in to check on them as they were becoming more alert. "My goodness, I thought you boys were going to sleep until bedtime!" She sat on James's bed and pulled him into her lap. She checked his diaper as she did so, not surprised to find that he was wet. She cuddled him for a few moments and set him on the floor, then gathered Carter into her arms. She gently squeezed the front of his pull-up and found that he was also wet. His pull-up was still quite warm, like he had just now wet it.

"I wet, Mommy," James mumbled, looking at the floor.

"Me, too," Carter said.

Sharon kissed Carter's forehead. "It's okay, honey. That's why I put you in a pull-up for your nap. I thought you might be wet when you woke up. You both slept longer than usual, I thought you'd both probably pee-pee while you were sleeping, or wake up and have to go too badly to make it to the potty." She cleaned them both up and put their dry clothes from before their nap back on them, then took them to the kitchen for juice and a snack. Sharon had an idea for dealing with Carter's accidents. Thirty minutes after he and James had started playing again, she made him stop and try to go potty.

"Don't hafta go!" Carter whined, not wanting to stop playing, especially when he really didn't have to go potty yet.

[Carrie96]

"I'm sorry, honey, but you wet your pants twice this morning. If you're big enough to wear big-boy underwear, then you're big enough to pee-pee in the potty instead of in your pants. Since you won't go by yourself when you need to go, I'm going to have to take you a lot to make sure you don't potty in your pants again." She led him to the bathroom and lifted the toilet seat as he reluctantly pulled his pants down and stood in front of the toilet. "You can go back and play either after you've pee-peed or after you've tried for five minutes."

Carter honestly tried, as he wanted to go play, but it hadn't been long enough since he'd wet his pull-up for him to have to go again.

Sharon gave him a few minutes before pulling his underwear and pants back up for him.
