Learning To Use The Potty (private for Carrie96 and me)

"I'll be fast." Sharon quickly rinsed out James's wet training pants and shorts, then bathed him and got him dressed in dry training pants and a clean pair of shorts before taking him back outside. "Make sure you tell Mommy when you have to pee-pee again, okay?"

James nodded, determined to keep his pants dry this time.

"That sounds great," Sharon agreed. "Come on, James, let's go potty before we leave. You've been doing so well, you don't have to wear a diaper when we go out anymore. You can wear a pull-up this time."

James nodded slowly, looking a little nervous. He tried to pee-pee when Sharon took him, but he didn't feel like he had to go and

"That's okay, honey," Sharon finally said, after James had sat on the toilet for a few minutes. "I just wanted you to try." She helped him off of the toilet, washed his hands, and helped him step into a pull-up before getting him dressed.

"Diaper?" James requested in a small voice as he held on to Sharon's shoulders, stepping into his pull-up.

"No, buddy. It's time for you to start paying attention to whether you need to potty when we're other places and get used to using other bathrooms. But tell Mommy or Daddy if you do wet your pull-up. If you pee-pee in it more than once, it will leak and get your clothes wet, just like when you pee-pee in your training pants."

Paul peeked into James's room, where Sharon was getting him dressed.

"Yes. Let's go." Sharon carried James outside and buckled him into his car seat.

Paul got in the driver's seat and drove off once Sharon had her seat belt on.

James looked out the window as they drove, his excitement growing at going somewhere.

"Sounds good. James, do you need to potty before we go play?" Sharon asked.

James shook his head quickly.

[Carrie96]

"Yes. Thanks." Sharon took James to the playground. "Tell Mommy when you have to pee-pee," she reminded him. "Your pull-up will feel cold and yucky if you go potty in it."

"That's fine." Sharon took her wine from Paul and sipped it as they watched James play.

James entertained himself, only vaguely aware of his growing need to go potty.

"It was just an accident, honey," Sharon assured him as they walked away.

James sniffled into Paul's shoulder as he carried him to the family bathroom to change his wet pull-up.

Sharon met them at the entrance. "Our table is ready."

By the time dinner was over, James had consumed almost three cups of milk and was already feeling another nagging urge to go potty.

"Hey, buddy, let's go try to potty while we wait for Daddy to pay," Sharon suggested.

"Nooooo," James whimpered.

[Carrie96]

"Come on, let's just try. We're going to be in the car for a little while before we can go potty at home." Sharon picked him up and carried him to the family bathroom.

James reluctantly sat on the toilet, but didn't try to pee-pee, partly from fear and partly from a touch of toddler stubbornness.
