Finding Refuge

Maya clang to her big sister, not wanting to be taken away from her and separated. She looked up nervously at her sister. Obviously her sister didn't approve of this woman taking her, and Maya figured she had good reasoning behind that.

Tara crouched down to face Amira. "Sweetie, I'm only taking her to the bathroom to clean up," she said slowly, hoping the girl might understand, but clearly she did not.

Maya gripped onto her sister's arm as tight as she could. She didn't want to be taken away and her sister obviously didn't want her to go.

Tara sighed and took the little one. "Fine. Come on, girls." Satisfied that both her sisters were coming, Amira followed along obediently. Tara sat Noor on Alice's little potty - given her issues with balance and gross motor activity, it was easier for her to use independently than the toilet - and started running a bath before removing Maya's clothes.

Maya looked over at Amira when the woman started to undress her. She wanted to get out of them now, but wasn't sure if her sister thought it was okay or not. She kept a tight grip on the bunny as well, her small thin knuckles turning white.

Amira frowned as she watched Tara undress Maya. Finally she pushed her way between them. "I will do it!" she declared in Arabic as she finished removing the girl's clothes. "Get in the tub."

Maya handed the bunny to Amira, unsure if the woman would give it

Amira set the bunny on the counter and started looking for soap. Of course she was looking for the cheap, rough bar soap they were used to in the camp, not the bottle of lavender scented body wash that sat not two feet away from her.

Maya ran her hands across the water smiling. The water was the perfect temperature, not too hot or cold. At the camp, the water wasn't freezing, but it wasn't warm either. She curiously decided to squeeze the bottles that were in her reach, causing soap to leak out of most of them, causing her to laugh a bit.

Amira studied the bottles and frowned. She couldn't tell what was what. Finally she grabbed a washcloth and squirted some shampoo on it, not knowing the difference between that and the body wash. Tara bit her tongue, figuring it would do no harm this one time, and watched as Amira carefully washed her little sister.

Maya cooperated completely and let her sister wash her with the sweet smelling soap. She smiled and inhaled deeply, not used to the sweet aromas. She babbles on to her sister about the smell and the bunny in Arabic.

Amira got Maya clean, then started splashing the suds around and laughing with her sister. Seeing as they were happy Tara let them go until the water started cooling down. "Okay honey, time to get out," she said as she held a hand out to Maya.

Maya squealed and babbled on and on to her sister about nothing

"Hang on sweetie, let's get you dried off first," Tara said and quickly got Maya wrapped in a pink kitty hooded towel. Once the girl's upper body was reasonably dry she handed her the bunny, scooped up Noor, who had sat quietly the whole time, and brought them to the big girls' room. She picked out a pair of panties, an undershirt, leggings, a hoodie, and socks and set them in front of Maya. "Can you get dressed?" she asked, offering her the panties to start with.

May sat on the ground and got the panties and undershirt on, though the shirt was backwards. She was struggling with the leggings though, each time she got a leg in it would be all twisted and it would go inside out as soon as she removed her leg. She sat on the ground squirming and struggling.

Amira immediately jumped in to help her sister. She got the pants straightened out and held out one leg for Maya, then the other. Once they were pulled up she helped her get the hoodie over her head.

"Lets go downstairs and play with your sisters." Kyle said picking Alice up. He grabbed Noor from his wife, figuring it would be easier that way.

Tara led the girls downstairs. "I'm going to warm the soup up, why don't you play with them for a bit?" She had made a big pot of chicken soup the night before and put that on the stove, then opened a can of refrigerated biscuits and put them in the oven. While dinner cooked she set the table and poured milk for the girls.

Kyle set both the girls down in the playroom. He smiled and got to all their levels. "Alice why don't you show your sisters your toys. I'm sure they'd like to share."

Alice got out a big bin of duplos and dumped them over. She was old enough for Legos, but didn't have the strength or fine motor skills in her right hand to build with them very well.

Maya went a little wide eyed when the duplos were dumped. They were loud, but they were colorful and interesting looking. She squatted down and picked up the block, sticking them together however she could.

Amira and Alice started building as well, no one really playing together, but at least they were playing along side each other and no one was fighting. Noor sat watching, as usual taking no initiative to get involved.

Kyle looked at Noor and handed her a few blocks, putting them together and taking them apart in front of her.

Noor took the two blocks and, like Kyle showed her, put them together and pulled them apart over and over.

Maya looked over at her sister and giggled when her stomach rumbled, thinking she was still just hungry.
