Unexpected Family Member

Emma stretched and smiled. "How long she gonna be here?" The toddler asked, not understanding that the girl was there permenately livingthere.

"Forever," Doug said as he removed Emma's wet diaper and wiped her off. "She doesn't have a mommy or daddy, so she is going to live with us from now on."

"Oh." Emma said, suddenly feeling bad for the girl. She nodded and thought. "Why?" She asked, wondering why the girl didn't have parents.

"Because they went to heaven," Doug offered as an explanation, hoping it would suffice as he handed Emma her panties to put on.

Emma nodded. She put her panties on before going back downstairs, not caring she was pantsless. She wrapped her arms around Julianna and smiled. "I sorry you dun have mommysnd daddy no more."

While he was upstairs Doug woke Evelyn up and changed her before carrying the grumpy toddler downstairs. He hated waking her, but she had a habit of not going to sleep at bedtime if she napped too long. Once downstairs he gave Emma her pants. "Put these on. It's too cold to not be wearing pants."

Emma giggled and put the pants on her head, sticking her tongue out at her father. She thought she was hilariously clever and smart. "They on!"

"No, put them on the right way, on your legs," Doug ordered.

Emma frowned. Her dad didn't seem to be in the mood for her games today. She put her pants on the right way as fast as she could, not wanting to get in trouble.

"That's better. Now, why don't the three of you go play," Doug said as he set Evelyn on the floor.

Emma grabbed Julianna's hand and dragged her to the playroom to play dolls with her. "Barbies!" She announced, pulling the big tub of dolls out. All the shoes and small things had to be kept in a different box away from the twins until they got older.

Evelyn trudged along behind them, still yawning, but perked up when she saw the barbies. "I dis one!" she squealed as she grabbed a Skipper doll.

"She needs clothes. She nakey!" Evelyn announced as she dug through the bin for an outfit that would fit Skipper.

Doug listened to the little ones while keeping watch at the front window for the rest of the girls, who should be getting off the bus any time now.

"Dis one!" Emma said pulling out a purple evening gown and a lab coat.

Evelyn furrowed her brow and shook her head as she pushed her sister's hand away. "No! Not dat one. Dis." After searching she found the red Christmas dress she was looking for and stuck her tongue out in concentration as she struggled to get it on the doll.

Emma shrugged and took off Skylar's clothes and out on the outfit she picked out, though it was a tad big because of the dolls' size difference.

"Joo, what she wear?" Evelyn asked, pointing to Julianna's doll.

The bus pulled up to the corner and the 3 girls got off. Clare followed her big sisters glumly as they made their way to the front door. Once inside, Mary Frances threw her coat down and kicked off her boots before stomping upstairs. "You just leave me alone now! I'm not talking to you anymore!" she snapped at Clare who stared at the floor, her lip trembling and tears welling in her eyes.

Julianna looked down at her doll. She reached into the bin and grabbed a denim jumper. "Um she's gonna wear this."

Leanna ran inside, discarding her bag by the door. She was trying to avoid accidentally becoming the victim of Frankie's wrath.

Doug glanced at Anna with raised eyebrows. "Do we even want to know what that's all about?" he asked. He generally preferred to give the girls time to work out their differences without adult intervention.

Anna shook her head. "I have no idea." She said hoping things work themselves out soon.

Clare hung her coat up on a hook by the door and put her boots in the closet the way Anna always told her to, then walked over to Anna and buried her face in Anna's thigh, her thin arms wrapped tightly around her leg.

Anna rubbed Clare's back, trying to soothe her. "What's up baby?" She asked trying to figure out the situation without blanking anyone or getting too involved.

"Frankie's mad at me. She got in trouble 'cause we were late again this morning," Clare explained. "I didn't mean to make us late! I had to go potty, I can't help it!"
