Valerie got he girls buckled in and drove to the big playground on the other side of town. "Here we are! Doesn't it look like fun?" She asked cheerfully as she got Sarah out.

Sarah nodded and held Valerie's hand as they walked to the playground from the car. She looked around and sat by a big patch if grass.

"Come on, let's play!" Janie shrieked and grabbed Sarah's hand.

Sarah tried to keep up with Janie as the older girl pulled her along. She looked at the spacious playground not really having been on one in about a year, but she just followed Janie wherever she went trying to be happy like her.

"Come on, let's go up there!" Janie squealed, pointing to a tower.

[Shy-Diapers]

Sarah tried to pull away seeing the tall tower, but was too little and shy to. She just kept keeping up with Janie all the way up to the tower. Looking down she saw how high up she was and it seemed to be as tall as a giant. She sat down and clung to the metal bars and started crying and shaking her head.

"Why are you crying? It's not even that high!" Janie said before grabbing the fireman's pole and sliding down. "If you're too scared just come back down the stairs!" she yelled up once she reached the ground.

Sarah kept crying and holding onto the bars. She shook, starting to have flashbacks of being in the 10th floor of her old apartment building and being stuck as the fire burned and the firemen tried to get to her. Pretty soon she was sitting in a puddle of pee as it dripped through the holes in the jungle gym.

"MOM! Sarah won't come down and I think she peed her pants!" Janie yelled as the urine dripped down.

Sarah clenched onto Valerie as tight as she possibly could. She kept sobbing and started to hyperventilate. Even if it had been two months since the fire, she was still traumatized by heights, she never made progress with counsellors because she wouldn't talk.

"Okay honey, you have to calm down. Take a deep breath," Valerie urged as she sat on a bench with Sarah on her lap and rubbed her back. "Janie, that wasn't nice of you to make her go up there," she scolded as Janie sat next to them.

Sarah kept crying and hyperventilating until she rested her head on Valerie's chest listening and timing her breathing with her steady heartbeat. Once she had calmed down and was once again holding her blanket and bunny, she said ''fire'', and it was the first thing she's said since it happened.

"What's that, honey? What about the fire?" Valerie questioned, wondering what was going on in Sarah's head.

Sarah shook her head not wanting to say anything else. She just hoped somehow someone would understand what she meant.

"Okay, I think we better go home," Valerie said, thinking Sarah was too upset to enjoy herself any more, and was in need of a change besides.

Sarah felt bad About making Janie upset. Not knowing how to say sorry without talking, she shyly held out the stuffed rabbit to her once they were in the car.

"I don't want your rabbit," Janie said glumly as she turned away and stared out the window for the rest of the ride home.

Sarah sighed, not knowing what else she could do. She held her toys close and stared at her wet lap. She perked up a tiny bit when Valerie got her out of the car. She smiled a tiny bit and wrapped her arms around Valerie.

"Okay, let's get you cleaned up," Valerie cooed as she carried Sarah inside and upstairs, while Janie ran off to the swing set. She pulled off the wet clothes, tossing them into the hall at the top of the stairs, and wiped Sarah down, then brought her to her room. She dug around in the closet until she found a package of pull ups left from a previous foster child and held one up. "Sarah, would you mind wearing one of these, honey?" she asked, hoping the girl wouldn't get upset.

Sarah started crying and shaking her head violently. She turned around on her bed so her back was facing Valerie. She wanted to tell her that she wasn't a baby and didn't need them, but had done so much to protect herself she shut off her words and couldn't talk.

"Sweetheart, it's just for now, until you start using the potty again. Then you don't have to worry about having any accidents."

[Shy-Diapers]

Sarah shook her head again, not even turning around. Once her tears stopped she curled up in a ball and faced Valerie. She let out a little sigh and nodded solemnly.

"Okay, good girl," Valerie said as she slipped the pull up on, then got Sarah dressed in a clean outfit. "You can still use the potty like a big girl if you want to, but if you have an accident it's okay. I won't be mad, I promise." Valerie pulled Sarah into a hug once she was dressed. "Now, do you want to go play outside, or stay in and watch a movie?"

Sarah smiled hearing the caring tone Valerie used. After a moment of thinking how to answer, she held up one finger wanting to play outside for a while.

"You want to go outside?" Valerie carried Sarah downstairs, bringing the wet clothes with her, and set Sarah down in the kitchen. "Can you put your sneakers on while I get some laundry started?"
