I do not want to have packages delivered right to my residence, I was wondering if I can have them delivered to the FedEx store then pick them up from there.

you can have packages delivered without a box. Just call them. give them your name and number and ship it to:

Your name - *phone number*

*UPS STORE ADDRESS*

City, State, Zipcode

Unless you are getting regular deliveries there isn't a need to get a mailbox.

You can have stuff sent to yourself at the local post office.

Just have the package addressed:

Your Name

General Delivery

Post office address

The package will be sent to the post office and you just go pick it up.

Does that include fedex and ups? Will the post office sign for the delivery on your behalf, and what about notifying you when it arrives?

General Delivery at the PO does not work where receipt signatures are required or with any shipping service other than the USPS (and maybe Canada Post- I dunno about that)..You can do it with tracking which shows that it was delivered there and when.
