Any Gardeners? Does Anyone Start Seedlings?

I just got my 2013 catalog from the Seed Savers Exchange.

Seeds need warmth, water and oxygen to germinate, and light to grow.

For beans, peas, melons, cucumbers, snake melons/armenian cukes, and squash, I found that they sprouted great. I put them between damp paper towels in a plastic tub on top of the fridge. After you see a pilot root peek out, carefully drop them into finger-holes in the soil where you want to plant them. Gotta be careful or they'll split in half.

if you try to plant seeds like cherry seeds(i dont know if you want to but i want to ome time and i looked this up) you would need to stratify or scarify the seeds, or any like them, stratifying if i understand it right, is putting the seeds in a freezer for the winter, scarifying, if i understand it right, is cutting or grinding the wooden shell, so the stuff inside can grow, if im wrong someone here can correct me. i tried planting cherry seeds from walmart bought cherries in the summer time and they didnt grow, didnt know i had to do any of that stuff first.
