You have to drink a lot of water with it for the best results. The way it works is that your body can't absorb the magnesium compound dissolved in the water, and thus the water remains in your gut. I'd say one hour after the initial release is a safe bet. This is also assuming you are taking the normal 'over the counter' type of magnesium Link to comment
