Marc In Empire Records

I just saw Empire Records for the first time. I noticed that Marc keeps a pacifier on his lanyard. It looks like he even puts it in his mouth at 18:30. He doesn't seem like he's a raver. He seems like he could be a little. The most likely explanation is he uses it to soothe when things become overwhelming. Is his pacifier use ever explained? In commentary, bonus features, or interviews?
