Bladder Capacity before needing to go to the bathroom

Not sure where you came up with your post for adults for bladder capacity, but I think wherever you got the information from was a very unreliable source.  855 ml would be equivalent of approximately 29 oz.  Most medical information shows adult capacity tends to decrease with age, not almost triple in capacity. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5609730/   Normal capacity of an adult is 300ml - 500 ml.

The formula for calculating bladder capacity is orginally based on Koff. The formula is 2 + chronological age in years x 15 . From various website sources, it is between 200ml to 500ml / 600ml / 800ml. Your specified site states 300ml to 500ml, but omits the age. Extrapulating this information that an adult (16 plus) has 300ml OR 500ml, how can one calculate the capacity of a 15 year old OR that of a 30 year old - or are you stating a 15 year old has the same bladder capacity as a 30 year old... and that it doesn't change over the years.

Yes, as one gets older, ones bladder capacity decreases, BUT, that is due to diet and degregation. A perfectly healthy individual that never had any issue with bladder, of age 55 should have a bladder capacity of 855ml, but none exist. Diet, medication and additives in food affects bladder capacity.

A question for you, since you state that bladder capacity decreases the older one gets, AND, a six month old has a 34ml capacity, at what age does the growth reverse?

There are a lot of causes for the capacity of the bladder to reduce which can include an increase in the size of your prostate pushing against your bladder, the weakening of your bladder muscles, overactive bladder (which is a group of urinary symptoms).

When your urinary system is functioning normally, you can hold off on urinating for a while. But as we age, neurological signaling changes, affecting our ability to delay things.  The brain-bladder connection and signals become somewhat altered as the brain deteriorates.  The signals transmitted through our nervous system get scrambled a bit and are not as well controlled.

The bladder capacity also changes with aging. As a person increases in years of age, their bladder will grow and change, too. The tissue usually becomes less elastic which means it will not hold as much and cause the person to urinate more frequently. Additionally, the bladder wall and pelvic muscles can become weaker so it is more difficult for the bladder to fully empty.  All of this can cause leakage.

Bladder function (simplified)

  1. Prior to birth, bladder function is autonomic...  fill : release
  2. Post birth (up to 3-6months) the system is autonomic... fills : releases : empties autonomically.
  3. 6 months + until toilet training, the system is under contious control... fills : signals of need : told to release : releases : empties
  4. Post toilet training, the system fills : signals of need : told to hold : fills more (and bladder stretches) : told to release : releases : empties

#4 continues. Old age causes degregation of bladder walls, nerves, forgetfulness etc. As a result, bladder can't fully expand and has reduced capacity. Fogetting that one was 'told' of a need to void means one will not be in a bathroom etc when the body releases. As a result, will wet oneself. This is classed as 'functional incontinence' for medical billing purposes only, but it is NOT incontinence. One has full control of their bladder functions, but may not have full mobility / memory control.

Bladder capacity at that stage should be in the range of  855ml less 10-20% range ( 684ml ), but placing the person in diapers etc, it doesn't take long for the body to revert to the pre- toilet trained behaviour of #3 fills : signals of need : told to release : releases : empties, and due to the two facts - forgetfullness, one forgets that they need to void, so voids there and then... and lack of bladder stretching, the bladder walls get thicker and less able to stretch. Bladder capacity can reduce to about 60-80ml (that of a 18 month old)

This is trained diaper dependence OR functional incontinence, a situation that can be avoided if the person's career took the person to the bathroom at regular intervals, OR the person went to the bathroom at regular intervals, lets say every hour or 2. Lazyiness is one of the major causes of functional diaper dependence - lack of excercise which causes obesity etc....
