Most medical information shows adult capacity tends to decrease with age, not almost triple in capacity. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5609730/ Normal capacity of an adult is 300ml - 500 ml. The formula for calculating bladder capacity is orginally based on Koff. The formula is 2 + chronological age in years x 15 . From various website sources, it is between 200ml to 500ml / 600ml / 800ml. Your specified site states 300ml to 500ml, but omits the age. Extrapulating this information that an adult (16 plus) has 300ml OR 500ml, how can one calculate the capacity of a 15 year old OR that of a 30 year old - or are you stating a 15 year old has the same bladder capacity as a 30 year old... and that it doesn't change over the years. Yes, as one gets older, ones bladder capacity decreases, BUT, that is due to diet and degregation. A perfectly healthy individual that never had any issue with bladder, of age 55 should have a bladder capacity of 855ml, but none exist. Diet, medication and additives in food affects bladder capacity. A question for you, since you state that bladder capacity decreases the older one gets, AND, a six month old has a 34ml capacity, at what age does the growth reverse? 1
ken2988 Posted September 24, 2022 Author Posted September 24, 2022 There are a lot of causes for the capacity of the bladder to reduce which can include an increase in the size of your prostate pushing against your bladder, the weakening of your bladder muscles, overactive bladder (which is a group of urinary symptoms). When your urinary system is functioning normally, you can hold off on urinating for a while. But as we age, neurological signaling changes, affecting our ability to delay things. The brain-bladder connection and signals become somewhat altered as the brain deteriorates. The signals transmitted through our nervous system get scrambled a bit and are not as well controlled. The bladder capacity also changes with aging. As a person increases in years of age, their bladder will grow and change, too. The tissue usually becomes less elastic which means it will not hold as much and cause the person to urinate more frequently. Additionally, the bladder wall and pelvic muscles can become weaker so it is more difficult for the bladder to fully empty. All of this can cause leakage.
babykeiff Posted September 24, 2022 Posted September 24, 2022 Bladder function (simplified) Prior to birth, bladder function is autonomic... fill : release Post birth (up to 3-6months) the system is autonomic... fills : releases : empties autonomically. 6 months + until toilet training, the system is under contious control... fills : signals of need : told to release : releases : empties Post toilet training, the system fills : signals of need : told to hold : fills more (and bladder stretches) : told to release : releases : empties #4 continues. Old age causes degregation of bladder walls, nerves, forgetfulness etc. As a result, bladder can't fully expand and has reduced capacity. Fogetting that one was 'told' of a need to void means one will not be in a bathroom etc when the body releases. As a result, will wet oneself. This is classed as 'functional incontinence' for medical billing purposes only, but it is NOT incontinence. One has full control of their bladder functions, but may not have full mobility / memory control. Bladder capacity at that stage should be in the range of 855ml less 10-20% range ( 684ml ), but placing the person in diapers etc, it doesn't take long for the body to revert to the pre- toilet trained behaviour of #3 fills : signals of need : told to release : releases : empties, and due to the two facts - forgetfullness, one forgets that they need to void, so voids there and then... and lack of bladder stretching, the bladder walls get thicker and less able to stretch. Bladder capacity can reduce to about 60-80ml (that of a 18 month old) This is trained diaper dependence OR functional incontinence, a situation that can be avoided if the person's career took the person to the bathroom at regular intervals, OR the person went to the bathroom at regular intervals, lets say every hour or 2. Lazyiness is one of the major causes of functional diaper dependence - lack of excercise which causes obesity etc....
18yrsoldjamie Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 2yrs ago I was seriously injured in a motocross dirt bike race pile up at the landing point coming off a hill jump getting lots of "yea hoo" in the air touching down 40 feet from the crest. In a tight pack of a dozen other riders. Mid-air another rider and I "contacted" into each other landing in a tangle within moments the riders Mid-air at the same time landing on top of me the guy who "bumped" me thrown off his bike landing on the hay bales Fractures to rt collarbone rt ribs rt hip both ankles and heels and major head injuries along with internal injuries needed bladder surgery to stop bleeding Bladder surgery resulted in daily "overactive" bladder often "functional/urgency" incontinence and nightly bedwetting Needed help with nearly all daily life anything and everything. For over 6 months mostly one arm getting around in a wheelchair. Even today I outside my apartment I use my wheelchair. I used a supportive walking cane at home and at work and short outings Returned to work a few months ago part time I am a checkout cashier at the small town 24rhs big grocery store. Anyway... BLADDER CAPACITY BEFORE NEEDING TO GO TO THE BATHROOM.. Over the 2yrs I have taken and tried several different medications for my "overactive bladder" The side effects of most of these causes "unwanted symptoms" What I am trying now "sorta" is the better one with it's own complex side effects which increases if I take it daily. So I take it when I know it's going to be "helpful" First "WITHOUT" the medication.. Since the catheter was removed... I have no "pre warning" that I have to urinate.. it's always a very sudden incredible urgency to urinate "right now" rapidly worsening to the point where urgency is so intense my bladder releases From urgency to peeing in a few seconds When I "voluntarily urinate" it's a 4th of the stream flow than it void in "urgency" Urgency voiding volumes are "small" urgency voids of 100ml or less Same as my voluntarily voiding not taking the medication Taking the medication I am on now.. I have great difficulty with "voluntarily urinating" when I don't have urge to urinate often no matter what I just can't make myself urinate Without the medication I have no problem at all voluntarily urinating before getting urge to go I now if I try to voluntarily urinate and "can't" usually have to use a catheter to drain my bladder Taking the medication is a "Ying/yang" frustration for me.. With the medication I have to drink a lot more or I get pain in my kidneys I don't have to pee every hour or less. I'm get urgency to urinate every 3hrs or so of "very full bladder" high volume of 450ml or more I don't get the very sudden incredibly intense urgency to urinate.. nor the "gushing voiding" Taking the medication upon the "faint feeling to urinate" it's already "happening" my bladder releases unstoppably all-at-once in "Gushing void" of 450 to 500ml I use nytone nasal spray for my bedwetting only for when I am staying overnight at friends or places as long as I don't have anything to drink a couple hours before bed it "usually" works. I know if I have any alcohol no matter what it's not going to work.. However I can't use it all the time.. I did every night for a while but after a few weeks it didn't work every time Bedwetting more and more "Protection" to keep my pants dry though accidents during the day Without the medication and having small volume very strong force gushing stream voiding of less than half a cup of coffee I've tried many different adult pull-up and none of them keeping my pants dry though these small gushing void accidents Wetting my pants or pajama bottoms leaking badly everywhere At home around the apartment during the day I have been starting to wear the "new" goodnite pull-ups in xl size. I can pull them down quickly to use the bathroom. Accidents sitting or standing up keep my pants dry though accidents BUT lying down the goodnite pull-ups horribly leak everywhere However Taking the medication having large volume voiding accidents the goodnite pull-ups just don't work leaking out. Outside my apartment I use briefs aka diapers with tape tabs underneath my pants. Without the medication having "small gushing stream accidents" I've had troubles getting diapers that will keep my pants dry though these small voiding but through large volume voiding accidents almost every diaper leaks badly Now I wear the Tranquility atn diapers outside the apartment small and large volume voiding accidents keep my pants dry though accidents Going places I know I will not be able to change my diaper after accidents happen I now wear a diaper called INCONTROL NIGHTTIME DIAPERS. these I only use in the wheelchair because they are not easy to "hide" under my pants and even more noticeable when wet because it swelling up..
