Throughout the movie, Mel's character suffers from a fear of falling. At the end we see why.

There's a flashback with Mel sitting in a high chair (a big one) and wearing a bib. His parents are fighting over him causing him to stir. His rocking back and forth tips the high chair over. With the flashback over, he realizes that he's not afraid of falling, but of parents.
