  1. Halfway into the episode, Tommy’s tummy got that uncomfortable feeling that told him it was time to go poopy. Part of him wanted to keep watching TV, but he hated pooping in his pants. He was much better at knowing when he had to poop than when he needed to pee, even though his poop sometimes sneaked up on him and caused an accident, too. While he had wetting accidents daily, his disdain for pooping in his pants usually outweighed his hesitance to tell a grownup he needed the potty, and he hadn’t had a poop accident in a couple of weeks. He found Sarah in the kitchen and tugged on the hem of her shirt. Sarah dried her hands on a dish towel and patted the top of his head. “What is it, honey?” ”I hafta go poopy,” Tommy shyly admitted. Sarah picked him up and walked quickly to the bathroom. “Okay. Good job for telling Mommy.” She pulled his pants down and helped him get situated with the potty seat on the toilet. He let out a little bit of pee before he heard plops in the toilet. “I done,” he announced a few minutes later. Sarah got a wet wipe from the back of the toilet and wiped him. “You did so good, sweetie.” She took him back to the living room and finished helping John clean the kitchen.
  2. Tommy nodded excitedly. “I stay dry and went pee-pee in the potty!” He informed him.
  3. “Sounds great.” Sarah poured a glass of wine and took the kids outside. The days were getting shorter, and it would start to get dark soon. A little while later, Sarah could smell dinner from inside, so she called the kids to the porch. She left Katie in the kitchen with John and took Tommy to the bathroom. “Let’s try to go potty before dinner.” She’d been reading a little bit about potty-training, and scheduled potty trips had been one of the suggestions she’d read. She’d skipped the after-nap one earlier that day since Tommy had woken up wet, but resolved not to do that again. Tommy obediently pulled his pants down while Sarah placed his potty seat on the toilet, but he didn’t need the stool. He got himself on the potty and pushed himself down like he’d been taught at the orphanage to pee. “Good job, sweetheart!” Sarah praised. She checked his underwear and pull-up in an exaggerated motion. “And your undies and pull-up are still dry! You’re such a big boy!” Tommy smiled at the praise, feeling encouraged to make it to the potty more often.
  4. Sarah carried Tommy to his room, removed his pants and wet undies and pull-up, and wiped him down with a wet wipe. Once he was in fresh undies and a dry pull-up, she threw his wet pull-up away and helped him back into his pants. She carried him to the half-bath off of the kitchen. “Look, sweetie, when you need to go potty, we have a Paw Patrol potty seat and a stool for you, if you need it. We have these in the other bathrooms, too. Next time you feel like you need to go potty, just tell Mommy or Daddy, and we’ll help you.” Tommy nodded uncertainly. “How’s your tummy? Do you feel like you need to poop?” Sarah asked, with Katie’s accident still on her mind. Tommy shook his head. “All right. Once Daddy gets back with Katie, we can go back outside.”
  5. “Careful,” Sarah warned, adjusting John’s arms around Katie. “Just a little accident. Why don’t you get her cleaned up, and I’ll take care of Tommy. We can come right back outside,” she assured Katie. Sarah went over to Tommy and picked him up. She checked his pull-up in the process and realized that John was right. “Oh, honey, you’re wet. What happened?” Tommy slipped his thumb into his mouth and lay on her shoulder. “Hadda go too fast. Couldn’t hold it.” ”You didn’t know you needed the potty until it was about to come out?” Sarah clarified. Tommy nodded. “It’s okay, honey, you’re still learning. But you need to tell Mommy or Daddy when you have an accident. We don’t want you to get a yucky rash, and your pull-up will leak and get your pants all wet if you go pee-pee in it more than once.”
  6. “Were you too shy to come tell us you needed to go?” Sarah asked, giving her an understanding look. She picked Katie up, careful to hold her by her thighs so she wouldn’t smush poop against her bottom.
  7. Tommy was running around again, but Sarah noticed that he seemed a little uncomfortable now. “I think you’re right, but I’ll give him a few minutes to come tell me. He needs to learn to tell us when he has an accident, so he doesn’t get a rash or leak if he goes in his pull-up more than once.” Sarah looked over at Katie and noticed that something seemed to be up with her. She walked over to her, and as she got closer, she noticed she had tears streaming down her cheeks. “Honey, what’s the matter?” An unpleasant odor met her nose as she crouched in front of the little girl, whose back was to her, so Sarah gently leaned her forward to check the back of her pants. “Uh-oh, sweetheart, did you go potty in your pants?” The lump protruding from her leggings made the answer obvious, but Sarah was surprised that she’d had an accident while she was awake.
  8. Sarah shrugged. “He said he didn’t. He was wet when he got up from his nap, so it’s probably only been a couple of hours since he peed...I have no idea how often to expect him to need to go. He was afraid he’d have another accident and wanted another pull-up, so I told them he could wear them while he was awake for a few days until he’s a little more comfortable here.”
  9. “What—oh.” Sarah walked over to Tommy. “Hey, sweetie, do you need to go pee-pee?” Tommy shook his head honestly. “Are you sure? We can come right back outside.” Tommy shook his head again, trying not to squirm and make his discomfort with his wet undies and pull-up obvious. “All right, but come tell me when you need to go, okay?”
  10. “Me too!” Tommy agreed. Sarah gathered him in her arms. Once both toddlers were dressed and had socks and shoes on, they went outside. The fall afternoon was turning cool, and Sarah enjoyed the colorful leaves as the kids ran around the yard. About an hour and a half later, Tommy was exploring some of the leaves that had fallen when he felt a sharp pang from his bladder. He grabbed himself and stepped in place, but he didn’t have time to tell Mommy he had to potty before he felt his bottom release and his undies and pull-up growing warm and wet. He looked down at his crotch in surprise as he wet his training pants. More times than not, this was how it happened—he either didn’t realize he had to to at all, or he only realized it right before he wet his pants.
  11. Sarah cupped Tommy’s cheeks with her hands and kissed his forehead. “Sweetheart, we know you’re still going to have accidents sometimes. It’s okay if you don’t make it to the potty and pee-pee in your undies.” Tommy just shook his head. “All right...Do you want to wear pull-ups for a few days, just until you’re more comfortable with us and get used to using the potty here?” Tommy nodded. “Okay, but I still want you to wear undies under your pull-up,” Sarah said, not wanting the pull-up to feel too much like a diaper against him and confuse him. Tommy agreed and held on to Sarah’s shoulders as he stepped into the undies and training pants. Once he was dressed, Sarah carried him to the kitchen and placed him in his booster seat, where there was a cup of juice and paper towel with goldfish on it.
  12. Sarah sat up and rubbed her eyes. “Okay.” She made her way to Tommy’s room and sat on his bed. “Hi, honey.” Tommy climbed into her lap and lay on her shoulder, and Sarah gently squeezed his pull-up. It felt a little squishy. “Did you go pee-pee in your pull-up?” She asked kindly. Tommy nodded, looking embarrassed. He was adorable with his blonde hair and bright blue eyes. “That’s okay. You’re still a little young to wake up when you have to potty. Let’s put some big-boy pants and one of your new outfits on.” Tommy whimpered and backed away from Sarah when she held open a pair of new undies. “What’s the matter?” Sarah asked. “Don’t wanna wet,” Tommy whispered.
  13. “Want Mommy,” The little boy whined.
  14. Sarah smiled when she realized Katie was falling asleep in her arms. She moved to the couch once she was asleep and settled a blanket over them. With Katie’s warm weight and slow, heavy breathing, Sarah was finally able to fall asleep, too. An hour after that, Tommy slowly opened his eyes. The first thing he realized was that he’d pee-peed in his pull-up. It felt cold and soggy against him. Katie may have only rarely had accidents at naptime, but Tommy rarely woke up dry from a nap. He cried out, unfamiliar with where he was and wanting out of his wet training pants.
  15. Sarah took her to the living room and found Princess Sofia on TV. Katie had only slept for about an hour, and Sarah didn’t know if she usually slept longer or not.
  16. “I know, baby. We’ll just have to remember to make sure you always go potty before a nap. Shhh, it was just an accident. It’s okay.” Sarah rocked her in her arms for a couple of minutes before standing up with her. “Let’s take a bath really quick, and then we’ll put some dry clothes on, okay?” While the bathtub was filling up, Sarah quickly moved Tommy to his own room so he wouldn’t roll over into the wet part of the sheets. Once Katie was cleaned up, she helped her into a dry pair of panties, leggings, and a t-shirt.
  17. Sarah was finally starting to drift off, but cries from Katie’s room instantly made her more alert. She hurried to her room before she could wake Tommy. “What’s wrong, sweetie?” As she approached the bed, the unmistakable odor of urine hit her nose, “Uh-oh, did you accidentally potty in your pants?”
  18. “I know, I’m tired,” Sarah agreed. She lay down on the other couch, but couldn’t calm her mind down enough to fall asleep. She finally turned on the TV And turned the volume down.
  19. Sarah shrugged. “Well, if she does wet her pants, that’ll help her remember that she needs to go potty before a nap, whether she feels like she has to go or not. There’s a plastic sheet over her mattress, it won’t be a big deal to clean up if she has an accident.” She took a bite of her sandwich. “I feel like I should’ve known to take Tommy to the potty before we left the orphanage. Both of them, even. Katie seems to be fairly well trained, but she’s still small, so reminders wouldn’t hurt.”
  20. Sarah was making a sandwich for herself when John came in. “Did Katie fall asleep okay? I didn’t know if she would try to resist a nap or not. Tommy surely didn’t, he was out like a light after just a couple of minutes.”
  21. Sarah carried Tommy into the living room. “Want Mommy to rock you?” The toddler nodded and nuzzled his face into her neck. Sarah draped a blanket over him and rocked him in the recliner, patting his back until he was sleeping heavily on her shoulder. Once she was sure he was deeply asleep, she carefully took him to Katie’s room so they would be together in case they woke up and forgot where they were. John was still lying down with Katie, about to fall asleep himself. Sarah tucked Tommy in beside Katie and straightened the covers over both of them. She kissed him and Katie both on the forehead before leaving the room.
  22. Sarah helped Tommy into a pull-up and a cozy pair of pajamas since he was about to take a nap. Once both kids had eaten, Sarah wiped their hands and mouths. “Anybody need to go potty before we take a nap?” Tommy shook his head and lay on her shoulder.
  23. Meanwhile, Sarah carried Tommy inside, wet pants and all, and gave him a quick bath. They already had plenty of new clothes and toys for both of them, and nighttime diapers and pull-ups for naps for Tommy. They figured a nighttime accident or two a week for Katie wasn’t enough to put her in pull-ups at night and wouldn’t mind having to get up to clean an accident a couple of times a week. Sarah lifted Tommy out of the tub and dried him off. “It’ll be naptime after lunch, so I’m going to go ahead and put you in a pull-up. Tell me or Daddy if you need to go pee-pee again, and we’ll take you to the potty. Try not to wet your pull-up, okay?” Tommy nodded absently and yawned. The mention of a nap made him realize he was starting to get sleepy.
  24. Tommy shook his head miserably and gasped when he felt a little bit dribble out. “Hafta go now, it’s gonna come out!” Sarah took his hand. “It’s okay, buddy, we should’ve taken you to the potty before we got in the car. Daddy’s trying to find somewhere to stop, but it’s okay if you have an accident. We’ll get you cleaned up as soon as we get home.” Tommy nodded, and bounced again when he felt more pee-pee come out. “Mommy, I gonna wet my pants!” He sobbed. The next spurt was more forceful, and he couldn’t stop it this time. “Nooooo, Mommy, I going pee-pee,” he moaned as he felt his control give out. He wailed as pee-pee rushed out of him with an audible hiss and soaked his gray sweatpants. Sarah sighed sympathetically as a wet stain rapidly covered his crotch and the top of his legs. “It’s all right, sweetie, you couldn’t help it.”
  25. Sarah turned around and quickly saw that Katie was right. Poor Tommy had tears in his eyes and was squeezing his little legs together as tightly as they would go. “Oh, honey, do you need to go potty?” Tommy nodded, his tears spilling over and dripping down his cheeks. “I gonna go in my pants,” he whined, bouncing against his seat and squeezing his bottom in as much as he could.
