Being
Special
By Les Lea
Ever since I
was little, I’ve loved my PJs. Mummy always said I
looked cute when she gets me ready for bed - nappy and
plastic pants first and then she’d pull on my onesie,
footed sleeper or, as I got older, cuffed cotton
jammies. She made sure I was all comfy and happy in my
special soft nightwear before I was kissed night-night
and sent off to dreamland.
Perhaps oddly I
had a larger selection of PJs than I did any other
clothing because mummy liked to see her ‘little cherub’
looking cute when I went to bed. Wearing a nappy stayed
with me until I was about eight and then it was changed
to DriNites or some equally padded pair of sleep pants.
Mummy said that keeping her sweet baby safe and secure
was her main aim. She always said that it was just a
preventative measure, like wearing a seat belt when
driving – you don’t want to have an accident but if you
do then at least you have some form of protection that
might just save you from harm. I couldn’t fault her
argument, mainly because I was too young to argue but it
all seemed to make sense.
However, not
long after this I was returned to wearing a fabric nappy
partly because I did very occasionally wake up in wet
undies but she never complained. In fact, she always
said I was a ‘blessing’ for wearing a nappy, thus
avoiding any huge bedding laundry, which knowing I’d
made mummy happy always pleased me.
My return to
fabric nappies also made mummy happy because she often
said, “Mummy thinks her sweetheart looks cuter in them”.
I’m not sure if this was the actual reason
because I know at that particular time we didn’t go
anywhere, which was down to having very little spare
money. Still, she always found the cash for new jammies
so I never went without in that area.
At that time
something changed. I didn’t know what or why, and I have
no idea where it came from or who sent it, but a large
box was delivered to our home. I remember excitedly
wondering what it was and mummy saying it was something
that would keep her little Sweetpea happy. That night
she introduced me to the thickest and softest fabric
nappies I’d ever worn and have done ever since. Mummy
says they’re very special for a very special little
cherub and so are the distinctive multi-coloured plastic
pants that arrived with them.
Now, if I wake
up wet (which I normally do) mummy releases me from my
soggy padding and then sits me on the potty and tells me
to do “Number Twos”. Sometimes I can go other times I
can’t but after I get cleaned up, creamed and powdered
I’m tightly wrapped in a fresh nappy for the day. Mummy
says these new items are nice and thick and should soak
everything up and my lovely colourful and juvenile
plastic pants with the thick waist and leg cuffs, will
keep me safe from leaking.

Over time I
loved the array of jammies I got to wear; satin, cotton,
silk, nylon, traditional, shorty, fun, nightshirts...
mummy couldn’t get enough of seeing me in them. If she
saw something that appealed, she bought it and I
suppose, when I think about it, I spent quite a bit of
time wearing just my night time outfit... it was very
comfy. Often, I’d get home from school and strip out of
my uniform and mummy would be there with a fresh nappy
and say she’d bought a new set of PJs and couldn’t wait
to see me in and... wham... I’d be wearing them
from early afternoon right through until the morning.
My bedroom was
always warm and cosy with a nice thick duvet with a
lovely cartoon or Disney style cover. There is a
night-light by the door and a mobile with stars and
moons that circle above me that has stayed in place
since I was small but mummy says that the soft tinkling
of it has sent me off to dreamtime so often it would be
a shame to lose its relaxing themes. The posters on the
walls are also from my childhood and though I’ve asked
mummy to change them to something more my age, she says
that my little bedroom should be a place of calm and
tranquillity so putting up posters of Superheroes would
be a terrible distraction for her slumbering baby... so,
Bambi, baby animals and the like stay.
It has always
been just me and mummy. She loves and fusses over me all
the time. Even as I’ve gotten older, she still keeps a
close eye on what I do or where I go (which is mostly
with her anyway) but I’m not allowed to go out on
adventures with any of my school friends without her
being present. When I beg for a little bit of freedom,
she simply says that I’m not yet ready for such
responsibility and then provides an incident or occasion
which she says proves her point. I can’t argue because,
well, it’s mummy and she always says – she knows best.
Last week, and
even though I’m approaching my fourteenth birthday,
because of an accident where I slightly wet my pull-up,
which is what mummy insists it was there for, I’ve once
again been returned to wearing thicker nappies and
plastic pants not only to sleep in. Also, what has
returned is that mummy now changes me into a nappy as
soon as I get home and puts me straight into my jammies.
However, sometimes I have friends to see and play with
but she only lets me go out if I’m already wearing a
nappy. She says I need to be ready in case of any
unforeseen accidents she doesn’t want me to embarrass
myself in front of my friends. Most of them know that I
wear a nappy sometimes but I don’t want them to think I
do so all the time so I pretend I have something
else to do and don’t go out.
Mummy has
always insisted that I’m well-protected from any
unforeseen mishap and that is why, from being a baby,
she makes sure that I wear a nappy or super absorbent
briefs or pull-ups. It makes sense to protect the most
important person in her life as much as possible… and so
that’s just what she does.
Since I became a
teenager things have become a bit more relaxed and while
at school I wear training pants. They’re a little bit
thicker than normal briefs but look the same. There are
extra layers of material to soak up any dribbles that
might happen and there’s a soft but waterproof cover to
prevent any leaks. They aren’t as crinkly as the plastic
pants I wear but I can still feel the slipperiness when
I sit down anywhere. It’s not un-nice but it’s always a
reminder. But, as I’ve said, mummy prefers that I wear a
nappy as much as possible for ‘safeties sake’. She
continually said that her Sweetpea never knows exactly
when nature is going to call so it’s always best to be
well prepared.
As far as I know
there are no other kids my age in the neighbourhood who
still wear a nappy and when I mention this mummy just
smiles and says “Then their mummies don’t love them as
much as I love you,” which is always followed by a hug
and a kiss and a pat on my padded bottom. “You’ll always
be my top priority sweetheart so a nappy remains and
keeps you safe from leaks or embarrassing accidents.”
If I start with
any further discussions about other kids my age not
having to wear a nappy, she just stifles it with further
cuddles and tickles. No matter how old I get, I have no
defence against mum’s ability to make me pleased I’m
wearing one as I often pee whilst laughing. When I do, I
immediately have to rethink my objections because I can
feel the wetness being absorbed and I’m left relatively
dry. I think mum knows when this happens because I go
very quiet and get one of those “I told you so” looks
from her.
If I’ve been too
argumentative, I notice that my padding is a lot thicker
“You need extra protection sweetie” is all she says but
I know it’s to hinder my mobility. I have a waddle which
she has said sets me apart and makes me her “darling
little angel”.

I don’t have a
dad; mum has been quite non-committal about him and has
dismissed his part in my creation to that of a passing
fancy. So, as far as mum has described him, he was
simply a nice donor who helped out when needed. However,
I know from over-hearing parts of conversation between
her and my aunties that my birth was quite awkward and
as a result, I’m the only child she’ll have. I suppose
that’s why she keeps me close and bound in her
continuous love.
I heard my Aunty
Diana say to mum back when I was at my eighth birthday
party she thought I should be out of nappies by then.
Mum’s reply; she was keeping her baby nice, snug and
safe... the nappies were there to help with that. Now
there are no discussions about it with any of my
relations, it’s just accepted that’s what I wear.
One of my
friends at school once asked me if I wore a nappy and I
beamed that I did but then they asked why. I replied
with what mummy told me, and what I’ve said to everyone
else who has ever asked me – “Good children wear
nappies, bad children don’t... and I’m always good for
my mummy.”
My birthday is
in a few days and I know because mummy has hardly been
able to contain herself that she’s found an exciting new
set of jammies for me and, weirdly perhaps, I’m as
excited as she is about just what that might be. She has
hinted that they will be like nothing else I’ve ever
worn. She has also hinted that they were something
exclusive that will sum up her particular little cherub.
Now I can’t wait
until I’m fourteen.
