Joey's Pacifier

Recommended Posts

Joey is stressed. Between finishing school, his upcoming trip to college, his girlfriend, his bully, his job, and his chores... Well, he has a lot on his plate.

One day, as he watches his baby brother calm down with a pacifier, he can't help but wonder if it would do the same for him. He tries it and, miraculously, it does kind of work. Unfortunately, he didn't realise that someone else had seen him. Joey's mom decides she has been putting too much stress on her oldest son, and what he really needs is some time relaxing, and if Joey finds the pacifier relaxing, well, she knows other ways to help too.

What follows is a story of humiliation, as Joey is forced into his new position and all the complications that comes with it.

How will his girlfriend react? Can he get through his last day of school? What about work? What if his bully finds out? All these complications, and many more, lie ahead.

Joey’s Pacifier

By Elfy

“Joey, could you change Lucas?” Fran called out.

“Mom, I’m…” Joey started.

“I’m busy and Ben is doing homework.” Fran interrupted.

Joey sighed. He had been sitting in the living room trying to relax after a really tough day at school. The eighteen-year-old was sitting his exams and he was feeling very nervous about them, especially of the ones he still had coming. That wasn’t to mention the shift at work he had starting in an hour, something he absolutely had to do to help his mom with the bills. His father had left when the third of the three brothers were born. From that moment on Joey was the man of the house and his mom leaned on him for a lot of help.

Joey had turned eighteen a few months ago. His brother, Ben was thirteen and Lucas, the baby of the family, was just four. With Fran, Joey’s mother, having to work a full-time job from home and do a majority of the chores, Joey was the one who was expected to pick up the rest of the slack. He was happy to help his mom, of course, but the stress was building and building. It felt like he never got time to sit down and just relax.

Standing up, Joey left the bedroom and headed upstairs. He walked through to his mother’s home office. She was at the computer and apparently on a conference call. Behind her, Lucas was sat in a small playpen area. Joey could already smell why he needed a change and sighed deeply. Messy diaper changes were always so much more horrible and protracted than wet ones.

“Come on.” Joey said as he reached down and picked up his baby brother.

Joey sat the four-year-old on his hip and could feel the way the diaper squelched; it was going to be a big clean up job. Honestly, Lucas was probably overdue for potty training, but no one had the time to really commit to doing it properly. It felt like home was always chaotic.

Walking back along the hallway, Joey passed his middle brother’s bedroom. From inside he could hear Ben laughing and talking, he was probably playing one of his online games. A part of Joey was very jealous of Ben’s ability to do whatever he wanted and relax. So much for him doing his homework…

“Joey.” Fran’s voice came from her office, “Could you pick up some stuff for dinner for the rest of the week after work?”

“Sure.” Joey replied.

“Thank you.” Fran quickly retreated back to her computer.

The truth was, Joey felt his stress levels ratchet even higher with every request made of him. He didn’t have a lot of money, and it would mean he would get even less sleep that night before dinner tomorrow. It felt like there were a thousand different things weighing him down and they were building up faster than he could possibly clear them.

Joey carried Lucas into the nursery and went straight over to the changing table. He pulled apart the flaps of the toddler’s onesie and pushed it up over Lucas’s belly exposing the diaper underneath. He pulled at the tapes and then lowered the front of the disposable.

“Ugh.” Joey turned away and closed his eyes.

Lucas just quietly sucked on his pacifier and seemed completely calm about everything. It seemed incredible that anyone could be as relaxed as the baby. Joey looked into Lucas’s eyes and shook his head; he was truly feeling jealous of the toddler with a messy diaper. In reality, he was just jealous of the idea that someone could live with so little stress on them.

“What’s it like?” Joey asked wistfully, “To not worry about anything.”

Lucas said something around the pacifier, but Joey had no idea what it was. He picked up a tub of baby wipes and started the long job of cleaning the toddler up. It was a particularly messy diaper and took a little while. About halfway through Joey sighed and paused what he was doing. He put his hands up to his head and tried not to freak out. That was something that was happening more and more often. Joey feeling like he was about to fall over the edge into a full-blown panic attack.

Joey took some deep breaths, despite the horrible smell in the room, and counted slowly. It wasn’t helping. It just felt like he had so much to do. Between school, his job, looking after his brothers, his girlfriend and his chores, he felt like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. With his eyes filled with tears he looked down at Lucas and saw the pacifier again. He didn’t know why, but he was desperate to relieve some of his anxiety and when he saw how much the soother calmed the baby, he wondered if it would work on him too.

On one of the shelves under the changing table’s surface there was a little tub filled with pacifiers. Joey plucked a little blue one from the box and held it up. He saw Lucas looking at him curiously, probably wondering when the diaper change would be completed.

“What the hell…” Joey sighed, curiosity getting the better of him.

Joey pushed the pacifier between his lips and started sucking on it. He looked down at Lucas who started giggling at the infantile behaviour. Joey snorted a little as well.

“Yeah, it ith a little funny, ithn’t it?” Joey found that he even lisped like a baby around the bulb of the pacifier.

Joey went back to cleaning Lucas’s butt whilst chewing on the pacifier. To his surprise, he was actually feeling a little better. It was a little embarrassing to be soothed by the same thing that helped babies, but he couldn’t deny that there was something about the repetitive sucking that just eased his mind and seemed to make him more present in the moment. Lucas was still giggling but at least it made the diaper change easier.

The old diaper was balled up and taped closed. Joey dropped it into the diaper pail and then took a moment to just try to centre himself, to forget the world and just feel the sensation in his mouth. It felt strange and wasn’t something he could do often, but after a few seconds he pulled out a fresh diaper and started to unfold it.

“There we are.” Joey mumbled around the paci as he pressed the tapes on the fresh diaper against Lucas’s belly.

“Baby!” Lucas exclaimed in the way toddlers do before learning to control the volume of their voice as he pointed up at Joey. Joey just laughed and shook his head.

Joey turned around to put the powder back on the shelf when he was frozen in his tracks. The door to the nursery was open and, standing in the entranceway with a deep frown on his face, was Ben. Joey immediately felt himself blushing as he stuttered some words and pulled the pacifier out of his mouth. He tried to hide it behind his back, but it was obviously too late for that.

“What the heck are you doing?” Ben asked. He sounded disgusted.

“N-Nothing.” Joey swallowed hard. Was it a bad sign that he already wished he had the pacifier back in his mouth? That it would provide him with something to focus on other than his thirteen-year-old brother’s look of confusion was undoubtable.

“It didn’t look like nothing.” Ben said accusingly, “You were using one of Lucas’s pacifiers!”

“Baby!” Lucas shouted from the table as he sat up and caused his diaper to crinkle, “Baby! Baby! Baby!”

“I… Look, it isn’t a big deal, OK?” Joey said. He ignored his baby brother to talk to Ben but every repeated accusation from Lucas seemed to deflate him a little more. He hated the desperation in his voice. He hadn’t done anything wrong and yet he couldn’t help but make himself sound guilty of something.

“I’m telling mom!” Ben said suddenly as he turned away and hurried towards the landing.

“No! Ben, let me explain!” Joey took two steps towards the doorway, ready to chase his brother and make him see sense, but then he heard Lucas moving on top of the padded table.

Lucas couldn’t be left alone. Not up on a high surface where he could fall and hurt himself. Joey already heard his middle brother hurrying down the stairs, it was already too late to catch him. Turning back to the baby in the fresh diaper, Joey picked Lucas up and sighed.

It wasn’t a big deal. He had tried using a pacifier. It didn’t mean anything. Plenty of people experimented with all sorts of weird stuff at his age. He was just doing it to entertain his baby brother. All these justifications ran through Joey’s head, and he repeated them out loud to the baby he was now carrying. Lucas didn’t respond. He’d probably already forgotten about the episode and was thinking about what toy to play with downstairs.

For a little while it seemed like Joey had just been making a mountain of a molehill. He didn’t know if Ben had actually told their mother and he certainly wasn’t going to ask. Maybe the teenager had already spilled the beans, and their mom just waved it away. It wasn’t a big deal. Why did his brain keep trying to MAKE it a big deal?

Joey knew the truth. It felt like a big deal because for a few moments, up in the nursery with the latex bulb resting on his tongue, he had felt genuinely relaxed for the first time in ages. The stresses of his job, of his college decision and of his responsibilities at home had melted away. He had been able to focus solely on the present. It was the sort of breakthrough for his mental health that would take a dozen therapy sessions that he could ill afford. Even as he sat in the living room, typing a draft college application on his laptop and watching Lucas play with his plastic army men, he wished he could put the pacifier back in his mouth. It was still in the back pocket of his pants, digging into him slightly as a constant reminder. He just wanted to put it between his lips again, to see if it had the same effect.

Joey felt like he was doing something wrong as he leant forwards in his seat and reached back to pull the little soother out of his pocket. He felt his heart racing. He was so desperate for the stresses of his life to melt away, and he was equal parts excited and worried. If it didn’t work, he would be back to square one.

The living room door was closed, and Joey was sure he would hear footsteps approaching in time to hide the pacifier again if he needed to. Lucas was so engrossed in his toys that Joey didn’t think anything could distract him. He held the pacifier up and, feeling like he was sneakily taking some drug, he pushed the bulb back between his lips.

Joey immediately felt himself relaxing again. Perhaps it is an instinctive thing that all humans feel but the rhythmic sucking seemed to just ease the anxious young man’s mind. He leaned back on the couch and took a deep breath. Before he knew it, he was closing his eyes. Soon he had his feet up and was laying horizontally. He hadn’t been sleeping well thanks to all the stress, but now he felt tiredness overtaking him. With his multitude of anxieties melting away, at least temporarily, his exhausted brain wanted to take the opportunity to rest. Within minutes he was falling asleep.

“So, it’s true then.”

Fran’s voice made Joey go from zero to one hundred in no time at all. His eyes shot open and he sat up, looking towards the doorway he could see his mom leaning against the frame, her face inscrutable. He didn’t know how long he had been asleep, but it felt like he had only just closed his eyes. What he was sure of, was that the pacifier was still firmly in his mouth. He quickly spat it into his hands and held it by his side as if somehow it hadn’t already been noticed. He could feel how warm and slippery the bulb was, the saliva wetting his palm in a way that made him shiver.

“M-Mom…” Joey was turning a bright red.

“When Ben told me what he had seen I thought he was playing games.” Fran said, “I shall have to apologise to him.”

“It… It isn’t what it looked like!” Joey was desperately trying to get his brain to click into gear and think of an excuse that would make what Fran had just walked in on make sense.

“Oh, really?” Fran asked. She walked into the room and sat on the armchair in the corner. She didn’t seem upset; in fact, she was smiling a little. Lucas got up and hurried over, she picked him up to sit him in her lap, “Because it looked like you were sucking on one of Lucas’s pacifiers.”

Joey felt a wave of shame going through him. It was bad enough that Ben had found him like that, now his mom had to. He looked down at the couch between his legs as his eyes filled with tears. It had just been a little experiment, just to see how he felt, nothing more. Fran was watching him now and not saying anything. He wished she would just tell him she was disappointed or that he was somehow bad and wrong. Anything to break the tension.

“I’m not mad at you.” Fran said eventually. Correctly guessing Joey’s worries, “I just want to understand.”

“Understand?” Joey shook his head, “There’s nothing to understand.”

“Clearly something is going on.” Fran said softly, “Ben caught you with the soother and I could write that off as some idle experimentation, but clearly it’s more than that if you did it again.”

Joey didn’t say anything. The mouthguard of the pacifier was digging into his skin, and he realised he had been clenching his hand so tightly around it that he was threatening to turn it into dust. He lifted his hand and used the back of his sleeve to wipe his eyes. He didn’t even know why he was so upset. Sure, this was an embarrassing situation, but it didn’t have to be anything more that than. He could’ve written it off as nothing, as some idle thing that he tried because of boredom. That wasn’t the truth though. No matter how much he wanted to lie and forget about everything he knew his mom would see right through it just because of how he was acting.

“Joey.” Fran said softly. She had put Lucas back on the floor where he had run back over to his toys, “Just talk to me.”

“I’ve just been so… so stressed.” Joey started talking and as he admitted the words he found a sob hiccupping up through his throat. It was something that had been consuming him and this was the first time he had been able to talk about it.

“Oh, Joey…” Fran said. She stood up and came across the room quickly, sitting herself next to Joey and putting an arm around him.

“It’s just all been too much!” Joey exclaimed tearfully, “I can’t keep up! When I was changing Joey and I gave him his dummy I saw how calm it made him. I wanted to know if it would work for me as well…”

It was an intensely embarrassing thing to admit. A very childish thought that it could work. And yet, it HAD worked, at least in some small way. When he had sucked on the pacifier it had stopped him worrying about a hundred things he needed to do in the near future and instead, he could focus on the then and there. Hell, just putting it in his mouth in the living room had relaxed him enough that he had soon fallen asleep. Just like a… Joey didn’t want to think like that.

Joey sobbed and Fran squeezed his shoulders. She remained silent, letting him cry it out. It felt cathartic. All the emotions he had to suppress as the “man of the house” being released in his salty tears. For several minutes he was able to just sit there and get his emotions out without a word being said. Even Lucas waddled over and briefly put a hand on Joey’s knee, likely trying to imitate his mother, before going back to his toys. The gesture made Joey chuckle despite everything.

“Thanks Lucas.” Joey mumbled.

There was a box of tissues on the living room table and Fran pulled out a handful so that Joey could clean up. His crying had subsided a great deal but the lump in his throat, primarily made up of shame, remained.

“Did it work?” Fran asked when Joey had calmed down.

“Huh?” Joey sniffed.

“The pacifier.” Fran’s voice was the softest Joey had ever heard it, “Did it help you? Did you feel… calm?”

A fresh flush of embarrassment reddened Joey’s face as he slowly nodded his head. There was no point denying it. The little baby item had allowed his brain to focus and even after taking it out he felt good for a little while after it. The first time at least, this time there wasn’t much good feeling, just humiliation at being caught in a compromising situation.

“I understand.” Fran said.

“You… You do?” Joey looked at his mom for the first time since she had entered the room. Through shimmering eyes he could see her smiling, ever so slightly.

“I do.” Fran sighed deeply, “And I feel like I must apologise.”

“Apologise? No, mom, you haven’t done anything wrong.” Joey shook his head, “It’s me. I’m the one who can’t cope. The one who isn’t good enough to…”

“No, Joey. I don’t want to hear you talking like that.” Fran was suddenly sterner. Joey stopped talking immediately, “This is my fault.”

Joey waited for his mom to continue. Lucas, tired of his toys and in no way interested in the “grown up” conversation on the couch, wandered out of the room, presumably to go find Ben. Lucas always seemed to want to hang out with the teenager even though Ben usually looked for any reason to fob off the responsibility on someone else, usually Joey.

“Ever since your dad left… I know there’s been a lot to do.” Fran said, “I couldn’t do it all myself and so I needed help. I think I’ve been leaning on you too heavily. I should’ve known you’d need something to help with stress, I’m just glad it’s this rather than drink or drugs.”

Fran reached over to the hand that was still tightly clutching the pacifier. She took it and looked at it for a second before raising it up towards Joey’s mouth. His eyes were side, and he looked at his mom uncertainly, but she gave a subtle nod of the head. Joey hesitantly opened his mouth and let the soother go in again. He felt it resting heavily on his tongue.

“I should’ve seen how stressed you are.” Fran said. She put her arm around Joey’s shoulder, “But don’t worry. We’re going to fix this.”

Joey leaned against his mom’s side and closed his eyes. It was embarrassing but as Fran’s hand gently stroked his hair he sucked rather noisily on the pacifier. He didn’t know what his mom meant when she said she was going to “fix this”, but he was still enjoying the endorphins released after his outburst of emotion. He sighed and felt like he could’ve stayed in that position forever.

Joey wasn’t sure how much time had passed before Lucas came waddling back into the room. He was also teary-eyed. He looked at Joey with the pacifier in his mouth but didn’t seem to care at all. His bottom lip was poking out in a very pronounced pout.

“Poo-poo!” Lucas exclaimed as he pointed to his butt. He was crying softly.

“Again?” Joey said quietly.

Joey had to chuckle slightly, and he started to get up. Fran put a hand on his shoulder that kept him in place. He looked at her with a frown.

“Let me deal with this.” Fran said.

“Are you sure?” Joey asked. His words muffled by the soother, “I don’t mind…”

“No, it’s fine.” Fran said, “I should’ve been doing this a lot more anyway. Don’t worry, let me think about things and then we’ll sort everything out. I’ve put too much responsibility on you for too long.”

Joey wasn’t completely sure what his mom was saying but as she lifted Lucas into her arms and left the room he flopped down on the couch. He’d already been tired but with the emotional outpouring he now felt exhausted. This time he didn’t care that the living room door was open and that he still had his pacifier in his mouth, he closed his eyes and let himself drift off to sleep.

I’m really loving this story so far. Definitely a strong start to an interesting story.

Good beginning but I think Lucas is wrong because you described him and making him act like a toddler of 16-24 month and not a four year old because even if was late to potty train he should act more independently and don’t need playpen etc

After Joey goes to one of his last days at school and sees his girlfriend and his bully in the halls, he returns home where he waits on tenterhooks for something to change.

Joey walked up to the large front doors of the school with his bag slung over his shoulder. It seemed crazy that a place he had walked into so many times, that he knew almost as well as his own home, was soon going to be left in the past. It was his final week; his exams were mostly complete, and he was really only still going was so he could spend time studying with his girlfriend, Tracy.

Joey’s locker, the same one that he had been assigned on his first day, was at the end of the corridor. As fate would have it, the locker was right next to Tracy’s and before he had finished getting his books Tracy had come up behind him. He felt her arms wrap around his waist and smiled.

“Hey.” Joey sighed as he let himself melt into the hug.

Tracy was a few inches taller than Joey and, in his opinion, she was the most beautiful girl in school. She may not have been as conventionally attractive as some of the other girls who dyed their hair blonde and wore several layers of make-up, but Joey had never been attracted to that. Tracy had freckles on her face, either side of her small nose upon which sat her glasses. She had auburn hair that she usually tied into a ponytail, but it always frizzed up just enough to tell anyone who was to look at her closely that she wasn’t obsessed with her looks, she was comfortable as she was.

“How are you?” Tracy asked as she let go and walked around Joey to open her own locker.

“Fine.” Joey lied. His stress was still out of control and seemingly the only thing he had thus far found that helped was the pacifier, though he dared not mention that to anyone outside the family. He decided to switch subjects, “Crazy to think we’ll be out of here soon, huh?”

“Good riddance to it, I say.” Tracy snorted.

“What’s the matter?” Joey joked, “You’re not going to miss Mr. Finch’s hours and hours of history lectures?”

“Ha ha.” Tracy sarcastically laughed, “You know I was asleep for roughly ninety percent of those.”

“Well, you know what Mr. Finch said... “Those who don’t learn history are doomed to repeat it.”” Joey did his best imitation of Mr. Jones, complete with pushing imaginary glasses up his nose.

“You know that I didn’t know he said that.” Tracy replied as she leaned over and pecked him on the cheek, “I was asleep.”

The pair of them laughed. Tracy said she was going to the library and Joey told her he would be along in a few minutes, he had to visit the bathroom first, and she headed off. Joey watched her go with a sigh. There was a slight tension between them that they both seemed to be trying to ignore. Tracy had already decided on her college of choice; she had decided what she was going to do there as well. She seemed to have none of Joey’s indecision or stress about the future. It was just one more thing for Joey to think about. The college he most liked the look of was in another state on the other side of the country, if he went there then his opportunities to see Tracy would be limited to holidays, at best. She told him their relationship could survive the distance for a few years, but Joey had seen the stats on long distance romances, the numbers weren’t exactly in their favour.

Joey was just about to close his locker door when a hand came from seemingly nowhere and slammed it closed. He jumped and wheeled around to see a much nastier surprise than Tracy. Brad was a full head and shoulders taller than Joey and was smirking down at him.

“I bet you’re going to miss me.” Brad sneered.

Joey felt himself going red in the face. It was humiliating to be bullied as an eighteen-year-old, it was rather a legacy thing from years before. Joey had first encountered Brad in middle school and had quickly become one of his victims. Whilst he ended up leaving the others alone, Joey remained an easy target. He just couldn’t stand up for himself.

“What do you want?” Joey asked with as much venom as he dared, “We don’t have homework anymore so I can’t do it for you.”

“Ooh, tetchy this morning, are we?” Brad mocked. Joey was surprised the bully knew what “tetchy” meant, “No, I saw Tracy heading off to the library and I assumed you’d be following like a good little puppy dog?”

Joey remained silent. Perhaps the worst part of being bullied by Brad was that he was so good at it. It was rare that anyone saw him when he threatened Joey or made fun of him. As far as most of the teachers were aware the two were friends. Every time there was a chance of being caught Brad would turn on the charm and Joey would be too scared to say anything else.

“What’s your point?” Joey asked. He wished Brad would get to the point. He just wanted to get whatever was about to happen over with so he could catch up to Tracy.

“Well, you have to pay the toll, of course.” Brad said as he moved around to block the corridor towards the library. He reached out a hand and leaned against the lockers, it really revealed how big his arms were and how much he must work out. Joey gulped nervously.

“What toll?” Joey asked. He always put up just enough defiance that he felt a little better about himself but never enough to actually stop what was happening.

“THE toll.” Brad answered, “Now come on, we both know how this is going to go. Hand it over and we’ll both get on with our days.”

“I only have…” Joey opened his wallet, “Ten dollars for lunch and-…”

“Perfect.” Brad said as he took the note from Joey’s hand, “That’s exactly how much the toll is.”

Joey felt an impotent anger burning inside. He felt so pathetic that this was happening to him at his age. It made it even harder to tell anyone about it. He didn’t want to admit to how much of a wuss he was. Maybe Tracy was right, maybe leaving the school couldn’t come soon enough.

“I’ll miss this.” Brad said wistfully, “Me and you. We’ve had some good times…”

Joey didn’t reply. He slung his bag over his shoulder and pushed past Brad who laughed as Brad headed towards the bathrooms at the end of the corridor. He needed the bathroom, but now he also needed to wipe the tears from his eyes before he saw Tracy again.

---

Joey kept expecting something to change. His mom had been quite cryptic towards him and, in the days leading up to the weekend, continued to act quite unusually. She was up to something but wouldn’t tell Joey what. There were a lot of deliveries coming to the house and Fran made sure she was always the one to sign for them before spiriting the boxes to the basement. Joey even tried to sneak down there late one night after everyone else had gone to bed but found, quite unexpectedly, that the door to the basement had been locked.

Ben had started acting strangely as well. Whenever he saw his younger brother, Ben gave him this knowing smirk. Joey asked what was amusing him, but Ben replied by miming zipping his lips and walked away.

Joey found his answers on the next Saturday morning. He had woken up as usual, after getting dressed he had walked into the nursery to make sure Lucas was alright but, surprisingly, his younger brother wasn’t in there. It wasn’t completely out of the realm of possibility that his mom had taken care of Lucas, of course, but it was normal routine for him to do it. He wasn’t going to complain about less work though.

Joey walked downstairs whilst yawning. He scratched his arm as he rounded the bottom of the stairs. Something was strange, there was a weird atmosphere, and everything was oddly silent. It took Joey a second to realise the television in the living room wasn’t on, which was strange for a weekend morning. He walked down the hallway towards the kitchen where the door was closed, another unusual occurrence. He pushed it open and was nearly had a heart attack.

“Happy Unbirthday!” Fran and Ben exclaimed as the door opened. Even Lucas had his arms in the year shouting.

“W-What?” Joey stumbled backwards a step in confusion.

The kitchen looked like it was set up for a birthday celebration. There were a few balloons floating around, the rest of the family were wearing party hats and, as Joey looked around the room in shock, Ben blew loudly on a something which made a shrill noise that made everyone jump. Despite his participation he didn’t look particularly happy. The real eye-catching thing though, was the banner hung over the window and facing him. It was a “Happy Birthday!” banner but the letters “Un” had been hastily scrawled at the start of birthday.

“I… I don’t understand.” Joey said in shock.

“Come in and sit down!” Fran said as she waved her oldest son forwards, “We have cake!”

Joey was so confused. The rest of his family were on the opposite side of the table as he came in and slowly lowered himself into the free chair. Ben, having seemingly done what mom had asked him to, had dropped his party favour and was sat back with his arms folded across his chest. Lucas, meanwhile, was straining for the cake from his highchair and being told to be patient.

“What’s going on?” Joey asked.

“I’ve been thinking about what you said.” Fran replied as she started cutting up a chocolate cake that had one candle on top, “About all the stress you’ve been under. Well, I’ve decided I’ve not been fair on you and so we’re going to make some big changes.”

“Changes? What changes?” Joey asked.

“Well, you’ve had to look after Lucas so much, I don’t think it was a coincidence it was a pacifier you reached for to calm yourself. After all, that’s what babies do.” Fran said.

“But I’m not…” Joey started.

“Hold on.” Fran continued. She stood up and walked around the table with a slice of cake and a party hat.

The plate was placed on the table and as his mom put the hat on his head, he looked down to see that his slice had the words “Baby Boy” written in the frosting. This was only getting more and more confusing.

“We’ve decided, as a family…” At Fran’s words, Ben let out a loud noise of complaint. Fran looked at her teenage son and continued, “Yes, ALL of us decided, that it would be beneficial if you were treated just like Lucas.”

Fran finished speaking as she sat down in her seat. Joey just blinked at her, his brain not really comprehending what she was saying. The words repeated in his head, but they didn’t make any sense.

“Like… Lucas?” Joey said slowly.

“She’s going to treat you like a baby!” Ben finally spat out, “Duh!”

“That can’t be right… Mom?” Joey looked at his mom. She was smiling back at him warmly, but when she didn’t say anything a cold bucket of reality seemed to wash over Joey, “You’re not actually going to… Mom, I can’t do that when I have school and work and… It’s ridiculous!”

“Is it?” Fran asked, “School is ending in, what, a week? I’ve picked up some extra hours working so you don’t need to work anymore either. I think this is just what you need.”

Joey wasn’t even sure what was happening. Treated like a baby? What did that even mean? He looked at Lucas and saw the toddler sitting in the highchair seemingly unaware that anything extraordinary was happening at the table. Mom wanted to treat him like that?

“I… I can’t…” Joey said.

“Eat your cake, baby.” Fran replied, “And then we’ll go upstairs and begin.”

A sort of delayed shock seemed to be spreading over Joey. He still had no idea what his mom meant but with so much confusion, his brain was just grateful to hang on to something. He had been told to eat his cake and that was something he could accomplish even if his brain felt somewhat stun locked. He lifted the chocolate slice to his mouth and took a bite. Everyone else at the table did so as well, Ben still looking like he wanted nothing to do with anything that was happening whilst Lucas practically smeared the cake all over his face in his haste to eat it.

Joey about to be very confused, but hope it works as well as mom thinks it will. Joey needs a break from things.

Good beginning but I think Lucas is wrong because you described him and making him act like a toddler of 16-24 month and not a four year old because even if was late to potty train he should act more independently and don’t need playpen etc

Classic concept with a lot of room for Joey to feel both the positive and negatives of it all, great start. That said, I was also hung up on the major discrepancies with Lucas. Was that a typo? Is he okay?  Yeah I know that a level of suspension of disbelief is needed for the genre, (ex: people believing someone looks like they fit into a daycare when they’re an adult, thinking an adult could so easily lift and carry another adult, etc.), but this stuck out to me as well.

Four-year-olds speak in complex sentences and manage many personal care tasks including bathrooming (it wouldn’t be an offhanded thought that it was, “a little late” to potty train, but a big sticking point). They experience and understand increasingly complex emotions and cause and effect. Four-year-olds don’t sit in high chairs or sleep in cribs typically either. Putting a four year old in a playpen would be quite unusual. Unless special needs they would also not wear a onesie. A four year old wouldn’t say, “baby! Baby!”, they’d say, “Joey, why do you have one of my pacis in your mouth?! You’re not little like me! You’re a grownup!”, and they’d say, “mommy why are we gonna treat Joey like a baby?” Or more likely, “I’m not a baby though!”

And honestly they nosy as all get out, not ignoring conversations, but getting right up in it. Tell me you’ve never talked to a four-year-old without telling me…😂  I just recently spent an hour with a child under two who makes this Lucas kid look like he must need some EXTREME interventions. Or an age change would be easiest. One quick edit to his age would make it all make a lot more sense…

My other thought was, “if Joey needs to work to help with bills then how is mom all of a sudden affording all of these deliveries of presumably adult baby items that we all know are costly?  I do hope mom clears that up somehow. Maybe even just telling baby Joey that while they may have struggled in the past and his contribution was important, it has been some time that they’re good financially speaking. Maybe mom started her own business at some point or got a promotion or better job or something. Whatever the case I think it needs to be explained a bit.

True just "I’ve picked up some extra hours working" probably does not mean 20 hours at minimum pay dollars worth of work then again I forget exactly what she does so maybe I'm wrong about this

All too soon the cake was gone, and Lucas’s face had been wiped clean. What came next was still a mystery to Joey, but he assumed he would be finding out before long. His mom stood up and walked around the table; she had picked Lucas up and had sat him on her hip when she tapped Joey on the shoulder.

“Come on.” Fran said.

“I still don’t understand.” Joey complained as he rose to his feet. Despite being eighteen and, presumably, finished growing he was still shorter than his mom.

“You will in a minute.” Fran replied, “Ben, did you want to wait down here?”

“Whatever.” Ben said as he roughly pushed past the rest of the family and went to the living room.

“Don’t mind him.” Fran said to Joey, “It’ll be an adjustment for us all.”

Joey felt like he might scream if he wasn’t given answers soon. Perhaps that is why he passively followed his mom up the stairs and down the landing. She stopped outside the nursery and pushed open the door.

“Come on in.” Fran said as she walked inside.

Joey slowly made his way down the landing. As he turned the corner and looked through the doorway, he saw his mom leaning over the crib and placing Joey inside. However, as he continued to walk in, he noticed there was quite a big change to the room. The first clue as to just what his mom meant when she talked about treating him like Lucas.

There was a second, very different, crib in the nursery. This one was inflated and definitely big enough to fit Joey. Inside it was bedding and sheets in the same style as Lucas’s. Joey’s mouth fell open as he stared at it.

“Do you like it?” Fran asked as she turned around to face away from the more traditional crib, “I couldn’t afford a wooden or metal one big enough to hold you but luckily I found this.”

“You can’t be serious…” Joey gasped.

“Of course, I am.” Fran said with a chuckle, “When I saw how much more relaxed that pacifier made you feel, I knew I had to do something. This will be a great for you. We’re going to take away all those stresses that have led you to be so tense.”

“But… but…” Joey couldn’t understand how his mom didn’t see how mad this all was.

“I’ve got you some new clothes as well, had to dip into the savings a little for those but when you see how adorable they are I’m sure you’ll agree they were worth it.” Fran continued. She walked over to the closet doors and opened them. Inside were Lucas’s clothes, obvious by their small size, and then a whole other set of clothes that were much larger.

“Alright, hands up.” Fran said as she walked back into the centre of the room.

“Why?” Joey asked dumbly.

“Because I’ve got to dress you more appropriately.” Fran said as if it was obvious, “I said that I’m going to treat you like Lucas and I mean it.”

“Mom, please… Can we talk about this?” Joey asked. Things were moving so fast and even as he spoke, he was compliantly raising his arms in the air.

“There’s nothing to talk about.” Fran said as she pulled Joey’s shirt over the top of his head, “Look, I know it’s scary, but in a few weeks I’m sure you’ll be thanking us.”

“W-Weeks!?” Joey felt his stomach lurch, “How long is this going to last!?”

“We’ll see.” Fran shrugged, “It’s open ended but I think once you get into the stride of things you’ll never want to grow up again.”

Joey couldn’t believe what he was hearing. His shirt was discarded on to the carpet near the door and his mom started unbuckling his pants next. He knew he should be stopping her, but his eyes were fixed on the crib again. A small voice inside his head asked: “what if she’s right?”

The pacifier had very clearly had a positive impact on Joey’s state of mind. For whatever reason, sucking on it helped to calm him down when his stress was threatening to overwhelm him. What if Fran was right and this really was beneficial?

Joey shook his head. It was madness. He was eighteen years old, he was about to finish his exams and had college coming on the other side of summer. There was no way he could let himself be treated like Lucas. It was ludicrous. And yet, as his pants came down and left him in just his underwear, he still wasn’t stopping what was happening.  Maybe the shock was dulling his reactions, but his mom had seemingly put so much thought and effort into everything. Could it hurt to give it a try? Sleeping in an inflatable crib and sucking on a pacifier didn’t seem so bad and neither did wearing some slightly more childish clothes. If he ju-…

“Woah! Stop!” Joey was very suddenly broken out of his reverie as his mom pulled on the waistband of his boxers. She’d got them down just far enough to show the top of his pubes before his own hands stopped them going further.

“Oh, come on.” Fran rolled her eyes, “It’s nothing I haven’t seen before. Besides, babies don’t have modesty.”

“But I’m NOT a baby!” Joey exclaimed.

“Not yet.” Fran agreed, “But we’ll get there. Now, hands off.”

Joey considered his options. He could refuse but he really didn’t want to hurt his mom’s feelings. Beyond that though, what were his options? Keep going as he was, stressing out every day to the point he was crying himself to sleep some nights and a raised blood pressure? Leave home on a salary which wouldn’t pay a fraction of rent? Couch surf with his few friends and family until they couldn’t stand him anymore? He didn’t think he could even impose himself on Tracy and her family, they were struggling enough as it was.

“What are you going to do?” Joey asked quietly.

“You’ll find out.” Fran replied in a friendly manner, as if she wasn’t currently tugging on the waistband of his underpants, “What’s the harm in trying?”

Joey took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Against his better judgement he relaxed his grip on his boxer shorts until they started sliding down his legs. He immediately felt so ashamed, naked in front of his mom for the first time since he had been a young boy. He cupped his hands over his genitals though it was far too late to actually hide anything.

“Right, up on the changing table.” Fran said as she pointed to the padded surface right next to them.

“What? Why?” Joey asked.

“Why do you think?” Fran shook her head and chuckled, “I said downstairs that I was going to treat you like Lucas and I meant it.”

Joey looked over to his youngest brother. He seemed totally unbothered by the scene playing out before him. In fact, he was flicking through a baby book that had big thick pages and sucking his thumb. He glanced down at the toddler’s waist and saw the diaper he was wearing. He felt his stomach do another flip.

“You can’t mean…” Joey started but Fran was already nodding.

“These were delivered a couple of days ago.” Fran said as she patted the diapers on the bottom shelf of the changing table, “I’ve been looking forwards to seeing how cute they look on you.”

Joey hadn’t paid them any attention before. Why would he? Diapers on the changing table shelves were completely normal. What he hadn’t noticed were that these ones were significantly larger in every dimension than the ones that were usually there. In fact, compared to the baby diapers on the shelf above they seemed enormous.

“Where did you even get them!?” Joey exclaimed as his cheeks turned red.

“The internet.” Fran shrugged, “You wouldn’t believe some of the things I saw on there!”

Joey was no stranger to the internet. He would very much believe what his mom has seen. But that is all besides the point, does she really expect to just put him in a diaper. He’s an adult, one that hasn’t had any accidents since he was originally potty trained, they’re completely unnecessary… except for the fact that his mom really thinks they will help reduce his stress. He sighs. He’s been down the path of trying to reason a way out of the situation and it didn’t work out.

“Can you at least turn around?” Joey muttered in embarrassment.

“I’ve already seen it.” Fran laughed, “And if I’m going to be changing your diapers you best believe I’m going to be seeing it a lot more.”

The colour drained from Joey’s face. He knew he should’ve expected it, but the idea of putting a diaper on was one thing, the idea of having that diaper changed was something else. He really wasn’t going to be allowed to use the toilet.

Without any clear options, Joey awkwardly climbed up on to the table whilst still using one hand to try and cover as much of his private parts as possible. He turned over and laid on his back, looking down the length of a table that he only just fit on to see Fran holding one of the diapers. It was a plain white with a line Joey recognised as a wetness indicator running from front to back. He saw it unfold, and it looked huge in his mom’s hands. He couldn’t believe this was really going to happen. Every muscle in his body wanted him to get up and run away but he forced himself to remain completely still.

“Lift up.” Fran said as she tapped the side of Joey’s hips.

Joey did as he was told and felt the papery edges of the diaper brush his skin. When he lowered back down there was noticeably more padding underneath his butt. His heart was hammering and he felt vaguely sick. He still had his hands covering his genitals as Fran lifted the front of the disposable up between his legs.

“You’re going to have to move your hands.” Fran said with a smile, “They aren’t supposed to be in there.”

Joey blushed even redder and looked away. He closed his eyes tightly as he moved his hands away and exposed himself to his mother for the second time in as many minutes. It was hardly any better when he felt the padding of the diaper get pressed against his front and flattened out. He dared a look downwards; the diaper seemed to come all the way up to his belly button!

“Nearly done.” Fran said.

Joey heard tapes and then felt them getting pressed against his front, two on each side. Then his mom’s hands moved away but the diaper stayed tightly wrapped around his waist. He felt like he couldn’t even move for fear of making the surreal situation somehow more real.

“You look as adorable in that today as you did fifteen years ago.” Fran said with a nostalgic smile, “Now, let’s find you something to wear… Unless you want to walk around in nothing but a diaper?”

Joey didn’t know if that was supposed to be a serious suggestion. He rapidly shook his head to say no and his mom laughed. Joey slowly stood up as his mom went over to the closet. He heard himself crinkle and winced. It was a familiar sound, just one he associated mostly with Lucas. He didn’t know what to do or what was going to happen next, his brain was still trying to catch up to events. As Fran was looking through the closet, there were footsteps outside the door. Joey stared at the entrance to the room with his heart hammering. There was a tentative knock.

“Yes?” Fran called as she pushed coat hangers in the closet.

“Is it… safe to come in?” Ben called out.

“Of course.” Fran replied as if she had no idea why it would be anything else.

The door opened and Joey was left with nowhere to hide. He squirmed on the changing table and tried to cover himself up, but the bulky diaper was too big and his hands too small. Ben walked into the room and saw Joey, his mouth dropped open. It took him a moment to recover his bearings.

“Oh, for God’s sake…” Ben squeezed his eyes shut and turned towards Fran, “I thought you said it was safe!”

“It is.” Fran said as she emerged from the closet. She watched as Ben, without looking at Joey, gestured his way with a grossed out look on his face, “Oh, grow up, Ben. You’ve seen Lucas in just a diaper how many times before?”

“That’s very obviously different!” Ben replied with annoyance.

“We talked about this.” Fran said as she closed the closet. She had a hanger in her other hand.

“Doesn’t mean I have to be happy.” Ben muttered. He was studiously avoiding looking in Joey’s direction, “I just wanted to say that Lucas is in the playpen. I’m going to go out and see some friends.”

Having finished what he was saying, Ben was already turning to the exit of the nursery. He had his hand on the knob when Fran spoke again.

“Remember what I said.” Fran said with a very serious tone. Ben stopped in his tracks but didn’t look around, “You’re the man of the house now. You can go out, that’s fine, just remember that you’ll have more responsibilities in future.”

Joey thought his teenage brother wanted to retort. He thought it looked like he clearly had something he wanted to say, but he bit his tongue and without even acknowledging that he heard his mother, he opened the door and left the room. When he closed it again it was with a slightly harder bang than it really required.

Joey heard his mother sigh and give a quick shake of her head before her smile returned. She walked over to the changing table where Joey was still sitting. Every tiny movement produced more crinkles, and the feeling of padding wrapped around his legs was beyond strange. He looked up at his mom.

“Is this…” Joey swallowed, “Is this all… a joke?”

“A joke?” Fran repeated with a frown, “You think I spent all this money on a joke?”

“It’s just really weird.” Joey mumbled.

“I know, baby.” Fran reached out and put a hand on Joey’s bare shoulder, “It’s a big adjustment for everyone. But we’re going to give it a try, OK?”

Joey didn’t see himself as having much of a choice. Everything was changing and he was being swept along in the current. His mom smiled widely as she held out a pacifier. Joey actually felt a sense of relief when he saw it, of everything that had happened, at least that the pacifier was something of a known quantity. He opened his mouth and let his mom press it between his lips. Almost instantly he felt some relief sweep over him.

“And finally, let’s get you covered up before you go downstairs to play with Lucas.” Fran said as she started to pull the hanger out of the clothes, “Gosh, he’s going to be so happy to play with you!”

Joey didn’t feel much excitement at the prospect. He had just heard that Lucas was going down to the playpen, is that where he was going too? If he was really going to be treated like a baby it made sense, where else do you put a baby after all. Joey shook his head. He couldn’t believe he was already trying to give some rationality to a situation that was clearly crazy.

“Arms up.” Fran said.

“Mom, are you sure…” Joey started, his words lisping around his pacifier.

“Joey, if you question everything, we’ll be here forever.” Fran said with a shake of the head, “You’ve been stressed, and we are going to see if this helps. End of story.”

Joey swallowed. He raised his arms slowly but as soon as they were over his head his mom lifted what he thought was a shirt and pulled them over the top. His mom was taller than him by a head, so it wasn’t much of a stretch for her to pull the shirt down over Joey’s face until his head popped out of the hole.

The shirt was surprisingly tight and baby blue in colour. Joey was about to ask if his mom was sure it would fit him when he looked down to see a flap hanging over the front of his diaper. It had three silver poppers on it. It took him a second to really process what he was looking at.

“A… A onesie!?” Joey gasped. He felt his stomach lurch and the pacifier nearly fell out of his mouth.

“You’re going to look absolutely adorable in it!” Fran enthused.

Joey cringed as his mom knelt down and brought the two flaps together between his legs. The poppers were pushed together and when his mom let go of the stretchy cloth, he felt the diaper underneath get pulled up and closer to his body. It made what had already felt like a large cushion of padding feel somehow bigger and thicker than ever.

“A perfect fit!” Fran said as she stepped back and looked Joey up and down.

“Mom…” Joey couldn’t hide the whine in his voice.

“Let’s go.” Fran said as she reached forwards and took his hand, “You’re going to have a thing or two to learn from your baby brother.”

“What?” Joey stumbled forwards. He quickly realised even simply walking in a diaper was different. His thighs were forced apart, and he could feel his butt swaying from side to side behind him.

“How to play.” Fran said matter-of-factly.

Joey didn’t really understand what his mom meant. “Playing” would surely be the easiest part of the changes he had experienced that morning. He knew how to push a toy car or colour a picture, after all.

Taken downstairs and led into the living room, Joey looked down at the floor as he saw Lucas look over. He sucked on his pacifier for comfort as he felt the baby’s eyes look at him. It was only when Fran gave a little tug on his arm that he reluctantly continued forwards and walked through the gate of the playpen. He stood awkwardly in the middle of the fenced in area surrounded by toys on all sides.

“Joey… a baby?” Lucas said as he pointed and tilted his head to the side.

“Yes, he is!” Fran said excitedly, “So I want you to be extra nice to your little brother, OK? Share your toys and teach him your games.”

Joey didn’t think Lucas looked too enthused about sharing his things, but he was certainly interested in having a playmate. The toddler’s eyes never seemed to leave Joey, and he felt like he was being inspected.

There was a bit of an impasse. Joey didn’t know what to say or do and Lucas was still pouting at the idea of sharing his play space. It was alleviated when Fran came back into the room with baby bottles, one for both of the “babies.” Lucas stuck his straight into his mouth whilst Joey stared at it in embarrassment.

“You need to stay hydrated.” Fran said, “So I want you to drink that bottle before I next come in or I’ll feed it to you myself.”

Joey felt his stomach lurch. This was already humiliating enough; he nodded his head. His mom smiled down at him and started heading towards the door.

“Mom?” Joey called out hesitantly.

“I think “mommy” would be more appropriate now, don’t you?” Fran replied as she stopped and turned around.

“I… Erm…” Joey’s train of thought had been derailed by this fresh instruction. There was so much to remember, he wasn’t sure how this was supposed to leave him less stressed, “M-Mommy?”

“Yes, baby?” Fran said indulgently, “What’s the matter?”

“I was just thinking about work.” Joey said. He was turning the bottle round and round in his fingers, “And school, and college.”

“Don’t worry about any of that.” Fran replied, “Mommy will let you know what you need to do. You just focus on playing.”

Joey ducked his head but gave an embarrassed little nod. A second later he was left alone with his brother again. He looked at the way Lucas was tilting the bottle up and sucking on the fake nipple as if it was the most natural thing in the world. He found his fingers fumbling with the pacifier lying in between his legs. It seemed like the two things weren’t so different, if he sucked on the bottle like he did the paci…

Joey was thirsty but he still found it difficult to raise the bottle to his lips. Every time he got halfway, he would suddenly chicken out and look around as if there were people waiting to jump out and announce they had caught him in such a compromising position. Finally, he turned his back to Joey in the small playpen and looked at the television instead. He raised the bottle to his lips before he could stop himself and tasted a drop of sweet juice right on the tip. He paused for only a brief second before pushing the nipple into his mouth and sucking, just as he did for his pacifier. Cold juice exploded into his mouth and coated his tastebuds. He swallowed and sighed as he felt it go down.

Once Joey had started it became difficult to stop. He was thirsty and no amount of liquid seemed to be satisfying him right away. His bottle was noticeably bigger than his baby brothers, another of the strangely oversized things his mother had apparently found online.

As he sucked on his drink and felt himself relaxing, it seemed to have a similar effect as the pacifier, Joey looked at the television. There were a family of Australian dogs playing together and, although it was clearly meant for someone Lucas’s age, Joey had to admit the animation and production was very good. He zoned out and watched the screen and as he alternated sucking juice into his mouth and swallowing it down.

Before Joey knew it, he had finished the drink. He put the bottle down and burped loudly. Despite the rather frosty reaction from Lucas to having a play partner, Joey heard the toddler laugh. He couldn’t stop a bashful smile from appearing on his own face. Once he had put the bottle down, he replaced it with the pacifier, feeling the familiar comfort in the otherwise strange situation. It felt so surreal to be dressed like this, and sitting in the playpen. He kept expecting to wake up back in his bed, but it wasn’t happening. He was having to come to grips with the fact that it was all real.

“Why do you wear diapers?” Lucas asked curiously, breaking Joey out of an almost meditative state he had almost got himself into.

“Because mom… mommy said so.” Joey replied after some hesitation. He realised how pathetic that made him sound, “It’s just a temporary thing…”

“But why?” Lucas asked.

“I’ve been stressed.” Joey said quietly. He was talking around the pacifier and was aware it was making his words sound childish.

“Why?” Lucas continued in the way children are wont to do.

Joey didn’t have easy answers for the boy. He didn’t know why the pacifier made him feel better, he didn’t know why his mom thought all THIS would help, and he certainly didn’t know why he struggled to cope with stresses that other people had no problem with. He looked down between his legs, where the front and back of his onesie came together and the bulge formed by the thick diaper underneath. He felt ridiculous.

“Your a baby.” Lucas decided, “Like me.”

“You’re not a baby.” Joey retorted, “You’ll be a big boy soon.”

Lucas seemed to think about what Joey said for a few seconds. The man could practically see the cogs turning inside Joey’s head.

“So…” Lucas said slowly, “I’m bigger than you?”

Joey opened his mouth and then closed it again. He wanted to say no, but the truth was that their mother had started talking about potty training Lucas. If that started happening, it would make the difference between them even bigger. With Lucas going out of diapers just as Joey went into them it somehow made everything feel even more embarrassing, a fact that Joey was surprised was possible. Instead of answering such a question Joey decided it would be better to just distract his youngest brother.

“Erm, so why don’t you show me a game?” Joey mumbled around his pacifier, “How do you play with these action figures.”

And just like that, Lucas was distracted from his embarrassing line of questions and instead started babbling on about his toys. Joey scooted forwards so he was next to his brother as he started handing out little army men for a mock battle.

It was after a little while, with Joey trying to distract himself with his little brother’s games, that he felt the drinks that he had go through him. His bladder was telling him it was time to go to the toilet, and he very nearly stood up before remembering the very different circumstances he was now in. His eyes went wide, and he immediately clenched his muscles harder.

“No!” Lucas exclaimed in frustration, “He goes over there!”

The toddler picked up on of the larger army men and moved it across the miniature battlefield away from where Joey had first put it. He mumbled an apology but was so completely distracted by his bladder that he barely took in what was happening. He knew it would be inevitable; this is what happened with diapers after all, but it had somehow felt unreal, like it would never actually happen to HIM. He was stuck in a state of shock, his brain had shut down and he had no idea how to react to such an obscenely strange situation.

Joey found his arms shaking a little and his heart was beating fast. Surely his mom didn’t expect… this, right? The diapers must’ve just been for show, to help him relax, but he shouldn’t use them. Despite appearances, he wasn’t actually a baby. He should go and use the toilet. He was sure he would be able to pull his private parts out of the leg bands to avoid any accidents. He imagined wetting himself and his mom walking in to find the diaper used when she never intended for him to go that far. What would she think then?

“Where you going?” Lucas asked as Joey stood up.

Joey put a finger to his lips and then pointed over to the baby monitor on the far wall. The one that had always been set up for Lucas, that usually didn’t pick up most conversations but would definitely hear if someone was crying. Joey put his finger to his lips to tell his younger brother to be quiet and then he stepped over the side of the playpen.

Finding himself having to sneak around his own house, Joey tip-toed carefully up the stairs. His bladder was insistently telling him it was time to use the toilet; he avoided the squeaky floorboard as he reached the landing and looked down the hall. At the far end was his mom’s office, she would almost certainly be in there working even though the door was open. The bathroom door was, however, right at the top of the landing and Joey smiled as he turned towards it.

“Joey? What are you doing up here?” Fran’s voice made Joey jump, and he let out a little yelp of surprise. He turned to the side to see Fran sitting on the edge of her bed, she hadn’t been in her office at all.

“I was just…” Joey started before falling silent. He looked around nervously, “Aren’t you supposed to be working?”

“It’s Saturday, baby.” Fran said with a twitch of a smile. Joey closed his eyes tightly. Of course. He couldn’t believe he had forgotten that important fact in amongst all the excitement of the morning.

“It’s OK, I was going to-…” Joey started.

“Come in.” Fran repeated.

Joey nervously played with his fingers but slowly stepped forwards into the bedroom. He crinkled loudly with every step, still not something he was used to. He stood in front of his mom with his head bowed, blushing and doing his best to avoid looking her in the eye. Her hand reached forwards and slipped underneath Joey’s onesie, pressing the padding up against his body.

“Still dry.” Fran said. Joey thought there was a little disappointment in the way she said it.

“That’s, erm, why I was up here actually.” Joey mumbled around his pacifier.

“Oh?” Fran raised an eyebrow.

“Well, it’s just… I know you want me to try wearing these things...” Joey pointed to his waist. Saying the word out loud was proving difficult. Even just referring to it was making him blush, “But I didn’t think you’d want me to… you know…”

“Use it?” Fran said for him.

Joey winced but nodded his head. Fran seemed to smile a little, she shook her head and put a hand on Joey’s hip, rubbing up and down a little.

“Baby, of course I want you to use it.” Fran said, “These diapers aren’t just for show.”

Joey, in his heart of hearts, had already known that to be the case. How could it not be? These diapers couldn’t have been cheap; would his mom have bought them if she didn’t expect him to use them? Of course not. That left the terrifying idea of what happened next though. His need for the bathroom had only grown but now he was being explicitly told he couldn’t use it. He swallowed nervously.

“Normally getting out of the playpen like this would be worthy of punishment.” Fran said, “But I suspect this is a valuable learning opportunity.”

Joey wished the ground would just open up and swallow him. He was really going to be expected to wet the diapers, as if he was no older than Lucas. He swallowed down a lump of shame in his throat. Fran’s hand came out and cupped the diaper between Joey’s legs, feeling it’s weight through the fabric of the onesie.

“Just let go, baby.” Fran said softly.

“Huh!?” Joey blanched. His mom wanted him to do it right there!? The thought terrified him, “I… I can’t…”

“You can.” Fran countered and smiled up at him, “You came up here because you needed the potty, right?”

“Toilet…” Joey mumbled. He didn’t like all the infantile words his mom was increasingly using for everything.

“You’ll feel better if you let it all out.” Fran continued, ignoring Joey’s little correction, “Then Mommy can take you for a diaper change.”

It all felt so wrong. Joey was eighteen years old, none of this should be happening. He had never been the most overtly macho man in the world, but what did exist of his masculinity rebelled at the thought of doing something so humiliating. His muscles tensed up harder than ever, almost painfully so.

“I can’t…” Joey choked out.

“I assure you it’s the easiest thing in the world.” Fran said with a small chuckle, “If Lucas can do it, then so can you.”

That was different. Lucas wasn’t potty trained, wetting himself was expected. Joey hadn’t had an accident for as long as he could remember. He shifted his feet nervously and looked towards the door. A part of him was saying he should be rebelling, pulling himself away from his mom’s grip and going out to the bathroom, telling his mom to screw whatever weird ideas she had about de-stressing him.

Joey anxiously looked back and forth from his mom to the bathroom. His bladder ached and demanded to be allowed to release but was being denied, it was not happy.

“Mom…” Joey mumbled desperately.

“It’s OK.” Fran said softly, “You don’t have to worry about a thing. Just let go and I’ll change you.”

It felt so wrong. Joey had been potty trained for as long as he remembered, his mom had told him he had been very quick to train, in fact, he was the first in his group of friends to manage it by quite some distance. Now he was reverting all the way back. It was guaranteed that he was going to wet himself, the first time he was going to do such a thing since he had got out of diapers. His hands found the pacifier that had slipped out of his mouth and shoved it back, he sucked on the amber bulb, desperate for a little relief.

Joey didn’t want to give up. But his body made up his mind for him. He shuddered as he felt his bladder let go. Opening his legs just a little, Joey felt one of the strangest sensations in his life. As he started to pee, he expected to feel cold streaks running down his legs, splashing on to the floor and getting his feet wet. Instead, he experienced the complete opposite.

Everything seemed to stop as Joey wet himself for the first time in over fifteen years. It was as if all his senses had turned off to focus on the embarrassing feeling of warmth that was quickly growing and expanding in his underwear. He could feel the urine rushing out of him like a waterfall, pooling in the bottom of his diaper and soaking quickly into the padding. Far from being cold, it felt exceptionally warm. In the silence, with his ears seeming to tune themselves to only pick up one sound, he felt like he could hear the faint his as he wet himself. He closed his eyes tightly, letting out a little whine as the warmth surrounded his genitals.

Joey’s mouth hung open and the pacifier came tumbling out. He looked down at the padding and almost thought he could see it growing bigger, it certainly felt like it was, the sides of the disposable seeming to push into his thighs even more than they had already done so.

It was a feeling Joey had expected to hate. The idea of wetting himself had seemed so abhorrent, so against what he had been told to do for so long, that he reasoned it must be something that would feel absolutely terrible. And yet, there he was, doing it, and not feeling bad at all. Aside from the embarrassment, which was considerable, he would’ve described the feeling of wetting himself as almost… pleasant.

As all Joey’s senses fixated on what was happening in his pants, he kind of forgot that he was standing in front of his mom. The world around him seemed to become dark and he didn’t see, hear or even smell anything other than his diaper. He had never been so hyper-fixated on one thing in his entire life.

By the time Joey had stopped he could feel the much heavier diaper sagging a little. It no longer felt so light as to almost not be there, it was no longer felt like a super fluffy cushion wrapped around him. The diaper had become much weightier and, although he was doing his best not to move, he could tell it was squishier. A small part of him thought it was no surprise it could be hard to potty train kids; the wet diaper seemed to be surprisingly comfortable.

Joey had become so focused on himself and his “accident” that he had forgotten where he was. Still looking down at his crotch, he jumped as he suddenly saw a hand come into view. It reached between his legs and patted the padding, lifting it up and feeling the weight, pushing the disposable against his body, before letting it fall again, emphasising the considerably increased heaviness.

Joey looked up bashfully to see that his mom was now standing in front of him. She had a big smile on her face and Joey felt heat flush his face red. The humiliation and shame of what he had just done suddenly overwhelmed him. He startled to mumble something that sounded like an apology, but he was instantly shushed.

“It’s OK.” Fran said softly, “Mommy’s got you. You did so well.”

The hand on Joey’s diaper withdrew and he was, instead, wrapped in a hug. He felt confused. Getting praised for wetting himself seemed odd and yet it had also felt difficult to do until his body made the decision for him. He wondered what his friends from school would think if they could see him, he wondered what Tracy would say, and shuddered as he then thought about the big bully, Brad. Finally, his thoughts turned to his middle brother, Ben. He was glad his brother wasn’t home to see this. His eyes filled with tears from all the complex emotions that filled his brain.

“Come on, let’s get you changed.” Fran said as she let go of Joey and instead took his hand.

Joey waddled behind his mom. He very quickly realised why Lucas seemed to have such a different gait when he was in need of a diaper change. The padding had already been pressing on his thighs, now it was digging in, and he widened his stance to compensate. He waddled just like Joey or any child with a diaper due for a change did. His mom looked back at him and her smile widened; Joey’s humiliation jumped several more notches.

Led into the nursery, Joey was taken to the changing table. He did his best to clamber up, but his mom helped with a hand squarely on his wet butt. He laid down and quickly pushed the pacifier back into his mouth. It was hard to believe he was finding himself on the changing table yet again. He supposed it was something he should always have seen coming, something that was entirely inevitable from the moment his mom decided on this course of action, but it was still not something he could see himself becoming used to any time soon.

The snaps on Joey’s onesie were undone, and the stretchy material sprang up over his belly exposing the diaper underneath. He looked away. Unlike the first time he was diapered, he didn’t do much to try and protect his modesty, it seemed pointless bearing in mind everything that happened that morning.

Joey’s diaper was opened up, and he shivered as the cool air blew against his warm crotch. He kept his eyes averted as his mom took a handful of wipes and cleaned him up. The whole change was completed with Fran talking quietly, softly affirming Joey and reassuring him.

“I remember when I used to change you.” Fran said with a wistful smile, “The first-time round, I mean. You were always such a good baby, never gave me trouble.”

Joey didn’t respond to any of the comments made. He wasn’t sure what he would say even if his throat wasn’t blocked by a ball of humiliation. His friends at school had sometimes jokingly teased him that he was a “mommy’s boy”, he never got into a lot of the teenage antics that the others did. The truth was that sometimes he wanted to relax and go to parties with them, but he had always had duties at home, and they only increased as he got older.

“I think it’ll be time for a nap after this.” Fran said as she started taping on the new disposable.

“A nap?” Joey finally spoke. He hadn’t had a nap since he had been Lucas’s age. Though, perhaps that was the point.

“Yes, I don’t want you to get too tired.” Fran replied, “You’ll get cranky.”

“Is Lucas having a nap?” Joey asked.

“Not today.” Fran said.

Joey swallowed down his embarrassment. Maybe he was now a smaller baby than his brother. It made sense in a weird sort of way, after all Lucas was probably going to be potty trained sooner rather than later whilst Joey was only just getting back in diapers. It was still hard to get used to that idea. He didn’t think it would ever feel normal for him to be like a baby again. How long did his mom plan on having this go? Not THAT long, surely?

The poppers on Joey’s onesie were pressed together, and he felt the fresh diaper press against him. He had to admit that it was nice to be dry again. He was helped off the table and led over to the inflatable crib. It was surprisingly big and still had a quite rigid structure. There was a metal frame holding it in position and one of the white poles, sticking vertically, had a gate attached. The small lock was undone and Fran held it open for Joey to step inside.

“Have a good rest.” Fran said.

Joey felt that his step was unsure on the inflatable floor of the crib and sat himself down so as not to fall over. Before he could think about what to say, his mom was leaving the room. As the door closed, he was finally left alone. For a solid minute he simply stared at the exit to the room and wondered if someone was going to come bursting in with a television camera on their shoulder, shouting that the whole thing had been some elaborate prank.

Joey reached for the pacifier that was clipped to his onesie and put it into his mouth. It was soon clear that no one was coming in, that this was indeed very real. Slowly, and hearing the crinkling with every movement, Joey lowered himself down until his head hit the pillow. He wasn’t alone in the crib. Aside from his pillow and sheets, his mom had populated the edges of the inflatable bed with stuffies, some from his own childhood, and some that must’ve belonged to Lucas.

It was very strange to be lying in the crib and staring up at the ceiling. Joey could see the edges of the bars all around him, feel the teddy bears that brushed his skin, and, just like before, any and every little movement caused him to crinkle distractingly. At first, Joey was sure that he wouldn’t be able to sleep in such unusual surroundings and in the middle of the day as well, but the stress of the morning must’ve taken it out of him. In no time at all he found his eyes struggling to remain open. He sleepily grabbed one of the stuffies, a monkey called Mortimer that he remembered having when he had been a baby the first time around and cuddled it against his chest as he drifted off.

“What is going on?” Joey tiredly asked Mortimer, “This all so… weird.”
