Spanky Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I know that a lot of people double diaper, but I've always thought that it's kind of a waste of the second diaper with disposable diapers. I know that you can put on as many cloth diapers as you want and they'll all soak up moisture. What about double diapering with a cloth diaper over a disposable. If the cloth one is big enough to cover the waist and leg openings of the disposable, then I would think that the cloth one would soak up any leakage from the disposable. Just curious? Has anyone tried this? It may be great for side sleepers. And, if you go number #2, like I love to do, it would be contained in the disposable diaper for easy clean up.
John Davis Posted January 14 Posted January 14 It is not necessary to actually double diaper to accomplish the goal of absorbing leakage from the disposable. As I am medically incontinent I spent a fair amount of time experimenting with this issue. For years I have used a thin cotton "panty" over a premium disposable, all covered by plastic pants. A relatively thin cotton layer usually is all that is needed to absorb leakage from the disposable. The greatest benefit is that it keeps leaked urine from pooling inside the plastic pants and then spilling out when changing. I have used a thin cloth garment made either from cotton flannel or, when out for extended periods, a slightly thicker garment made from cotton toweling. A pair of men's whitey-tightys also will suffice. --John (double incontinent) 1
kdlstar9 Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I sometimes use a cloth pocket diaper as a diaper cover over my disposable diapeeee. It works decently but still need a plastic pants over top. The pocket diapers are nice cause they have a variety of cute prints and spices up my diaper wardrobe.
Sumi Posted January 14 Posted January 14 This happens to be my go to for night time protection. I sometimes take a medication that assists with expelling excess water and when I do I will wear a betterdry with a 2xbooster and another medium booster then a kins cloth pull-up over that and topped off with a trueJapanese wrap around/side snap plastic pants. I have yet to leak in bed at night with this combo. If no meds at night my attire consists of a Tena overnight pull-ups with a xl booster with another small booster and the kins pull-up over that and topped off with the kins nylon taffeta waterproof pants. Again, completely assured of a dry bed in the morning. Daytime apparatus is the Tena pull-up with 2 medium booster staggered once again covered with the kins nylon taffeta waterproof pants. It took a very long time of experimentation with many different products and combinations of products to finally come up with the combinations that work for me. It is nice to be able to go through the night with peace of mind and the day combo is very discreet too with the same peace of mind.
drynot Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I use a terry cloth lined pair of plastic pants to wear over disposable diapers if I'm worried about leaks. The terry cloth will soak up anything that gets past the diaper and the plastic pants keep it all contained. This combo has worked very well for me over the years. I recently bought a couple of pairs of Babykins terry cloth lined plastic pants and they are just wonderful. The cloth lining wicks well and the plastic on the outside is buttery smooth.
rusty pins Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I have a couple times to catch leaks with low end diapers. Thing is you then have to wash a cloth diaper, so may as well just wear a cloth diaper anyway, unless you are doing poopies. I used to double diaper with disposables when I got mostly low end disposables from Goodwill for $3 a package. It helped when out Christmas shopping for 5 hours. I would either cut slits in the first diaper so it would run into the second diaper, extending capacity overall or I would double diaper so when I needed a change around 3 or 4 hours, I could go into a restroom in a store, slide down the outer diaper, remove the wet inner diaper and the pull the dry outer diaper back up. I'd be good to go, and not have to figure out how to carry a fresh diaper into a store to change in their restroom without being noticed. Now with premium diapers like Betterdry, Abena and others, I don't see any reason for me to double diaper anymore, even with cloth over a disposable.

It’s rarely needed but nice to have when disposable leaks. On the frugal and lazy side, I only wash the cloth diaper when disposable leaks which is not often.
Alyeskabird Posted January 14 Posted January 14 IIRR a lot of people would double diaper due to the diaper they where using not being very absorbent. Putting a second one over the first would help extend the absorbency. There are a number of posts about the how and why of it. As we started getting to seeing the nice thick and very absorbent diapers, that has become a lot less needed. There are diapers out there now that can last all day without needing a booster of some sort. OP was not very clear if this interest in extra layers was do to need, comfort, desire, or to help deal with leaks. For leaks, there are a lot of different ways to go, from simple terry lined plastic pants, to wearing a cloth diaper and plastic pants over, depends on what your comfortable with, and what fits into how bulky you want things to be.
Badbunny Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I have a thick cloth diaper I like to use over my regular disposable diapers with a cover over it all when I let my little side decide on my diaper for the day.
MixerOp Posted January 14 Posted January 14 On the other hand, (and maybe this has been discussed before) but what about a thin cloth diaper or even somewhat typical underwear UNDER the disposable diaper? ...For the reason of better wicking?

I have worn a disposable diaper with 1-2 baby cloth diapers on the inside (a 21x40 flat or 2 or 1-2 prefolds) it did help with wicking to the back of the diaper. I too have worn a thin cloth diaper over the disposable to catch any leaks. Even with a GOOD diaper I have trouble with leaks around the leg openings. At times I have worn 1-4 disposables or cloth filled disposable with a very thick cloth diaper and plastic pants over it; to get that little feel of a little in a thick diaper. I have done that lately. But I cannot for a bit now I go back to work tonight. BOOHOO
joemama Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I routinely wear a cloth booster inside of my disposable to help with wicking. If I am doing a long flight or day, I will wear solid diaper, cloth booster inside and possibly a disposable booster too. Then over that a cloth diaper or panty and plastic pants to make sure any press outs are not shown. 2

Yeah, poopies in a cloth diaper is just something that I really don't want to deal with. I can just throw a wet diaper in the washing machine. I guess my end goal is super thick diapers between my legs and super extended wear. I've just been thinking about how awesome it would be to have a boosted Rearz Mega diaper, or an ABU Tiny Tails diaper on with an overnight prefold cloth diaper on over the disposable. The disposable diaper and booster would continue to absorb and swell up even after they began to leak. I'm thinking that the cloth diaper would catch the leaks and wick them in.
BabyLouise Posted January 15 Posted January 15 I sometimes wear a towelling cover or towelling lined plastics over my diaper but normally with a plastic pair over that.

LOL!
