People who have lost continence due to diapers, do you think you could get it back?

Recommended Posts

I am back on my usual shit.

Obviously, some people lose continence in ways that are related to their diapers. Either they lose it intentionally, through untraining (see, e.g., The twelve month diaper-training program), or they lose it incidentally — and generally to a lesser extent — through the incentive pressures of 24/7 (see, e.g., Practical 24/7: A guidebook, or Understanding Infantilism's qualitative survey on the topic).

I've noticed that a lot of people feel they can't get their continence back. The likelihood of a given person with diaper-related continence issues having this view seems to be directly linked to the amount of time those continence issues have been present. It doesn't seem to be an attitude thing; some like it, some hate it, but they agree on the conclusion. My own experience with diapers and my (ultimately transient) attempts to recover my continence seem to bear it out, too.

So, I'm interested to hear from people with diaper-related continence issues (untraining or incidental):

  1. What are your diaper-related continence issues? How did they come about? How long have they been present?
  2. Do you think you could regain your continence? If so, do you think it would be easy or difficult from where you are now? What factors are informing your view?

As an individual who experiences incontinence and relies on diapers permanently, the idea of regaining control over my bladder and transitioning to using adult toilets or underwear seems unlikely. The challenge lies in the fact that I have become accustomed to wearing and using diapers, making the prospect of potty training daunting. Society's restroom facilities also pose a hurdle in this journey, complicating the process of transitioning away from diapers. Additionally, unlearning the habits associated with diaper use at my age presents numerous obstacles that would need to be addressed. Consequently, the decision has been made not to pursue potty training for me, focusing instead on maintaining my comfort and routine in diaper usage. The consensus is that remaining in diapers is the most practical and beneficial solution for my circumstances, rather than attempting a challenging and potentially unsuccessful transition to using adult facilities. Given these factors, I have come to accept that diaper training is a permanent aspect of my life, with the likelihood of ever being successfully potty trained diminishing as time passes.

Entirely self-inflicted through prolonged diaper use with consequential completely care-free peeing.  The nocturia and urgency (sensed only if I stop to impose control which I generally don't) might be enhanced by age but who knows.

It’s an interesting question.

I’m somewhat reluctant to accept the concept of irreversibility (where no physiological damage has occurred).  To me, it’s a brain-wiring thing although I can accept that the resolution path might need to start in the unconscious realm since that’s where voiding decisions have been banished to.

So the way out may not be the same as the way in.

I think that’s the case with my bedwetting, eventually pushing the pee decision out of sight under the metaphorical bed.  Now sometimes that pee decision happens in a place I don’t consciously see so I don’t know what NOT to do to avoid it.

As for my day-dependence, I still believe that this could be reversed by a long process of inconvenient and probably accident-prone abstinence but I don’t want to.

I suspect at some level at least some of those simply don't want to.  Incontinence is a kind of permission, a social licence to pee in your pants.

Great question!  After years of wearing diapers and untraining I’m completely diaper dependent day and night … at least urinary.

I often think about whether or not I could retrain, assuming I have a genuine desire  to, which I don’t.   As difficult as it is being totally incontinent and diaper dependent, for me it feels easier, better and more natural than when I had decent bladder control.

Up until recently, I would’ve said the largest barrier to retraining is that my muscles and the external sphincter feel too weak.  When my bladder gets to about 150-200 cc it contracts and my sphincter gives out.

However over the past year, it seems I’ve lost the continence mentality and I find more and more I forget what it’s like to “hold it in”.    It feels like toileting is for other people, not me.    Plus the muscle weakness is still there too.

I feel like I'm more psychologically diaper dependent then actually physically incontinent but if I stopped wearing nappies I would need the toilet pretty much constantly because I've learned to wet at the slightest urge and without clinch relax, my bladder tone is definitely smaller and I pee in small amounts all the time, sometimes just little drips and my sphincter has got so used to doing this it it doesn't relax clench anymore. I can pee in all positions, I can pee in front of people while having a conversation. When I've had more then a few beers I always wake up in a wet nappy without realising I've peed... My bladder is more sensitive to urine in it.

I've lost the everyday automatic clench sphincter reflex. This is notable when I've been drinking beer more with lots of fluid in me. I remain open when walking, just dribbling in drips and spurts. When I think I've finished peeing I have a lot of after dribble. When I have a BM in my nappy which is twice a day now I involuntary leak pee. BM's are easy without anal clench and they are small BM's each time... Twice a day, in the morning and straight after my 5pm meal. If I've been drinking beer my BM's are more unpredictable and I've messed in front off people... I told them beforehand I have IBS but when I've messed they have not said anything and I quickly changed and refreshed myself...

There is nothing quite like this feeling… When ur having a normal casual quiet  conversation and you feel ur bladder give out and you continue your conversation all the while your diaper is getting warmer and heavier and nobody is the wiser for it.

To a degree, I suppose I've lost some continence, but not quite enough for me to be happy with it. I mostly experience post-void dribble now, a few small leaks here and there when I'm not wearing, and a diminished cruise range between needing to go #1. I haven't wet in a half hour, my bladder becomes painfully aware that it needs to void. I still don't void easily nor with unconscious thought, to my chagrin. Usually I have to do some mental and physical gymnastics to get the flow going, even after 4 years of untraining.

I've tried going a number of days without wearing diapers and frankly it's kind of a pain in the ass to do so. It's now easier for me to wear diapers and do my gymnastics then to have to struggle to maintain resistance to going to the toilet. I could probably regain what little continence I've lost, but probably not without a lot of work and anxiety. I'm nowhere near the "point of no return" but I think it'd be a huge hassle to try going back to 100% toilet usage.

With regards to this section, there's a lot of negative reviews. Read with caution. I feel like these reviews were taken in the olden, olden days of this community and doesn't necessarily reflect the modern version of what 24/7 can be like for us today. This is back when all you had were Molicares and Abenas to supplement disposable diaper use. Back in the days of DPF so to speak. It seems to me to be much easier to achieve 24/7 status with what we have on the market today.

I also took a look at "Understanding.Infantilism.org"'s posts here. BitterGrey's data seems to be dated from the early 90s. I remember the sentiments well, actually. Not very useful for today's standards, if you ask me. The people that BitterGrey interviewed for their thoughts on 24/7 usage provide scant reviews at best. I'm surprised you used these as minimums for your question here. Not saying that understanding.infantilism.org is useless, but it's definitely not up to date on modern views as you'd see here. Not a good base for comparison if you ask me.

Helpful in the early 90s? Yes. Helpful today? No.

My diaper-related continence issues are fairly mild, thus far; during the day, I have a reduced cruising range, but I can hold it whenever I need to. I just don't like to. I can go about 45 minutes before I start to get uncomfortable, and after 90 minutes, I am like a grenade with the pin pulled - at some point, it's gonna happen. When I do start peeing, I can't stop until I'm all but done, which is different from the before-times, when I could go several hours between potty visits, and, while ceasing to pee midstream was never fun, it was possible, whereas now it is all but impossible.

The greatest change has occurred overnight; I'm a bedwetter now. It's unreliable, but it happens often enough that I would not go to bed without a diaper on - I know I would sleep like crap.

As to if any of this is irreversible, I'm not sure. The overnight situation would be more difficult, because the events occur when I'm unconscious, so it's not like I can set out to prevent them. I guess I would try the same techniques my parents deployed when I was a bedwetter as a kid, to try to get me out of overnight diapers - limit fluids before bed, set an alarm to get up to pee in the middle of the night, use a mattress protector, maybe I could give myself stickers for dry nights...

As for the daytime aspects, I'm pretty sure that if I started trying to hold it, I could gain the muscle tone that I've lost back, in time, to the point where I could get back to being able to operate for a few hours between bathroom visits. But I just never want to have to try and to that again - I like wearing diapers and I intend to keep doing so.

I read a study years ago, though, about the improper use of sedatives and antipsychotic medications in the elderly, such that some patients had been diagnosed as essentially being vegetative, or non-communicative, and they were bedridden and kept in diapers for months and years. Once the authors started tinkering with their meds, some of the subjects "woke up", and were able to regain some independence, including being able to use the washroom with assistance. The moral of the story is, these were elderly, frail, and generally declining individuals who had been in diapers for months or years, and some of them were able to gain back some of their continence functionality, so, if they can do it, chances are, so can most of us, if we really want to. So if anyone is terrified of test-driving the 24/7 life, because they think of it as being a walk along a cliff's edge that they can easily fall off of, and would not be able to re-climb, I would dispute that narrative.

Interesting questions

1. My incontinence is split into 2. I’m a lifelong bedwetter, but my day time continence I lost gradually through a mixture of laziness and subconscious psychological need. It began when I started getting changed into a diaper much earlier in the evening as it was enjoyable to relax, have a beer and watch tv without worrying about going to the bathroom. I was also for the first time, in a relationship with a girl who was completely comfortable with diapers so the whole thing felt very normal. However over time it did lead to accidents and near accidents when I was relaxed but not diapered and things like going to a movie or a longer journey were impossible without a diaper. Eventually going anywhere without protection became stressful for me. And so began my denial stage of just in case pull ups. Except they weren’t just in case. I needed them physically and mentally. I could make it to the bathroom, but I’d be dribbling into my pull up before and after. Despite this, I never considered myself incontinent. I was a bedwetter who just needed a just in case pull up during the day. Then one day (fortunately outside my home) I got out of the car and uncontrollably peed through my pull up. I couldn’t stop the flow. When I sat down and discussed it with my girlfriend (now wife) I realised that I was getting through 4 pull ups a day and likely having small accidents that I wasn’t aware of. Incontinent.

2. Funnily enough, I remember her asking me back then if I could stay dry if I really needed to. And I admitted that no, I couldn’t and that the stress involved would have a huge impact on me. It’s the same today. I don’t know for sure that I’m physically incapable of retraining, although I know from the time I spend each week “airing out” onto a bed pad that I mostly urinate in a very frequent and very weak stream. What I do know is that emotionally I don’t just need diapers, but that I need the peace of mind and relaxation that comes with being incontinent.

Me personally, the stress/anxiety of trying to not pee/poop myself if I don't wear diapers would be so high, it just wouldn't be worth it.  Accepting that I need diapers and that using them is a responsible/normal thing for me has been very helpful.

Previously, I would tell myself "oh i can go without diapers," try pull-ups, or even go commando, and would just end up with various skin issues, my clothes smelling bad, and feeling miserable.

So, for me, I'm happily dependent on diapers and incontinent (i.e., have involuntary release of bladder/bowels). It took me years to get to a point where I could accept this about myself (even knowing I wanted this the whole time).

1: As soon as I moved out of my parents house in the early 90s and got a full time job, I started to wear diapers every night. Once I started my own business and got it going. I stated to wear off and on all the time. More on the off. Then I decided (20 - 25 years ago) to get rid of my underware and go full time. I never looked back. I wake up wet every day. If I am on my feet all day and then sit down, I'll find that my diaper got wet. Only time I take off my diaper is to change it or to shower. but I some times  find my self leaking.

2: First off I have never have thought of regaining continence. I would think it would be harder that losing control if not imposable. There are times that I don't like diapers as much as other times but not enough to try to gain control. I'm in the mind set that there is no way to go back and I am okay with that.

Depending on your point of view, having an accident during a diaper change is either the ultimate triumph, or failure.

  1. What are your diaper-related continence issues? How did they come about? How long have they been present?

Ive had an overactive bladder with urge incontinence for about 3 years now. My continence issues are from using diapers off and on for fun for over a decade combined with a medication that can cause issues with bladder control. I made the decision to wear pull ups and diapers to manage this and never looked back. I can’t make it longer than about 40 minutes before I need to use the bathroom or risk wetting myself. I occasionally wake up in the mornings soaked with no recollection of wetting. During the day, especially at work, I manage with pull-ups but at home and at night I wear diapers.

  1. Do you think you could regain your continence? If so, do you think it would be easy or difficult from where you are now? What factors are informing your view?

I think if I stopped taking the medication, did some pelvic floor therapy, and really resolved to regain continence I probably could. It would most likely take awhile and be difficult, but I think it’s possible.

I'm mostly incontinent from prolonged diaper use. I started wearing to bed around 10 years ago and trained to become a bedwetter which eventually impacted my daytime control. Over time I wore more during the day and eventually transitioned to full time.

No, I feel like that ship has sailed. Mentally I'm just too used to my diapers now and identifying as an incontinent man.

I’ve been wearing diapers for over the last 15 years, but started wearing a combination of pull ups and diapers 24/7 since fall 2022.

Before going 24/7, I would say my continence was fairly reliable. I could stay dry for the most part, only leaving small inconsequential dribbles on my underwear. I may have had a bit of an overactive bladder, but it wasn’t much of a stressor for me when I was out and about while wearing boxers.

Since going 24/7, things have worsened considerably. I wouldn’t say I committed myself to unpotty training, because I generally try to make it to the bathroom when I’m in pull ups at the office (I have a hybrid job where I work remotely and go into the office a few times a week). However, at home, I’m typically in high absorbency diapers and pee whenever the urge strikes. This has resulted in a highly overactive bladder that seemingly gets worse over time. I’m at a point now where I can’t complete my 45-60 minute commute home without needing to pee, even though I make a point to use the bathroom before leaving. So I’ve become quite used to wetting on the train on my way home from work and coming home in a soaked pull up. In addition to the increase in frequency and urgency, I experience a substantial amount of urine leakage. I still haven’t had a full-blown accident yet, but I constantly dribble pee uncontrollably throughout the day now. There have been days where I try to wear boxers, but they always end up feeling damp, and they smell quite badly of urine after a few hours. I don’t trust myself to leave the house without at least a pull up anymore, and not sure I will ever again.

On top of my weakening bladder, I’ve also experienced some diminished bowel control. I can still generally make it to the bathroom to mess, but I frequently experience some bowel leakage before I can make it to the bathroom in time. This has been a somewhat unexpected consequence of wearing 24/7, since I only mess my diapers occasionally, maybe once a week, if that. I’ve also experienced a few genuine messing accidents where I’m expecting to just pass gas but end up messing instead! I think if my bowel control gets worse, I’ll ultimately switch to diapers full time instead of my combination of pull ups and diapers.

If I were to stop 24/7 and make a concerted effort to strengthen my bladder and bowel sphincters, I think I could, but I think it would take some time. I’m not sure, however, that I’ll ever manage to get to a point where I could consider myself completely dry. The frequent dribbles I experience are here to stay I think, and it’s hard to see my OAB improving without some medication or treatment. I’ve read that the average male my age only pees 7-8 times a day, but I pee over 10 times before noon 😅 I don’t even keep track of how many times I need to pee throughout the day, but I’d say its well within 25-40 times a day depending on my hydration levels. If I drink caffeine or alcohol it’s even worse.

1. What are your diaper-related continence issues? How did they come about? How long have they been present?

I have been a DL off and since my early TEENS! I would use baby diapers stuffed in my underpants and WET them. Then, about 10-15 years ago, my job took me an 8-hour drive away from my wife and grandkids, of whom my wife had custody through the courts. I had an apartment, and I had been buying the largest baby diapers you could buy. I decided to order 12 Cloth Diapers and Cloth Inserts and 6 pairs of plastic pants. I only used it on weekends, and at that, maybe just one day and night. My job lasted about 2 years. I got rid of all except a couple of plastic pants somehow came home with me! I did not use it again for a few years as my job then took me overseas. Shortly after coming back home, I got sick with COVID-19 and spent a month and a half in the hospital. While there, I had to wear diapers as I was not allowed to get out of bed, and the nurses diapered me. Now, 51/2 years later, I most days wear just a Pull-Ups during the day at work. Usually, by the time I get home, my pull-ups are WET and will change into a diaper until bedtime. I must wear a Diaper with a Booster and Plastic Panties. When I wake in the morning, I will be very WET and Soggy.

2. Do you think you could regain your continence? If so, do you think it would be easy or difficult from where you are now? What factors are informing your view?

No, I have tried as soon as I came home from the hospital and would wet my chair watching TV. I tried not to wear diapers to bed that did not work either. I thought about asking for some help from my GP, but after reading in several blogs about what the drugs do to help your Incontinence have terrible aftereffects, so here I am wearing diapers 24/7 365. No, I will continue to WET my Diapers and or Pull-Ups until I die. Thanks all!

When I was around 18 the rest of the family was on vacation; so I got to wear a lot. I worked 8hr shift then. I wore as soon as I got home till work time; I'd wear even when out. I'd wear 3 21x40 diapers with 2 or 4 prefolds as stuffers and Gerber plastic pants. One day I didn't wear the plastic pants while shopping. I heard laughing then I felt pee running down my legs. My diaper and pants were soaked. I ran for the car. It took me a few days to feel ok about not wearing after that. I feel it all depends on how long you been just letting it go. If you weaken things then you may not get full control back.

I was wearing diapers for fun for many years. Some times I did a consisten week or 10 days in a row, but than weeks or even month without diaper. During the pandemic my diaper usage increased and I was diaperd 24/7 for weeks. When I stoped, my continece problems started and got worse so sometime I was urged to pee every 10 minutes so I started to wear diapers unvolutarily.

2. Do you think you could regain your continence? If so, do you think it would be easy or difficult from where you are now? What factors are informing your view?

Yes, I started some pevic floor excercises and it got better a bit.

For me even if it was hypothetically  because of diapers the answer is a fat nope because after basically a little over a decade in diapers being out of diapers would feel wierd

Me , like you , I'm a bedwettter. I wear every night and use it every night. At first my unconscious wetting was maybe three nights a week but if I woke i would just lay there and go. Three years later I unconsciously pee every night plus the hardly awake wettings. Day time incontinence is growing. At this point at least once a week I full fledge wet my self. I get a small urge and I had better head directly to the bathroom. If I don't I just start going and it's unstoppable . A long trip in the car and I'm in a diaper . I cant count on having enough time to stop so I wear , and use , when ever travelling. Also being I wear a diaper at night I too have been putting it on earlier and earlier. Now that it fall i will soon be putting it on at supper time. It's to the point where if I have a diaper on I just wet unconsciously. At the point I'm at I don't think it's reversible. It seems like my body wants and likes where I'm going. There are times during the day I try hard to make the bathroom but when I pull out my pee pee it's already going. My wife said the other day " I swell pee " . It was me because of dribble . So I'm just going to give up soon and diaper 24/7 and frankly it's what I want

I chose to go 24/7 6 years ago now with the aim of becoming dual IC. It took me 12 - 18 months to feel I would definitely need to be diapered to avoid a leak and probably 2 years to become a regular bed-wetter. Bowel incontinence probably took longer and now I have more than achieved my goal of not only constant dribbling but regular BM leakage as well, at least twice a day sometimes three of four. I honestly can't remember when I last woke up dry in the morning and if I wake up in the middle of the night and feel I am dry as soon as I move in bed I sense a flow, not a gush, that I can't stop. Probably once every couple of weeks I will wake up to find I have pooed in my diaper in my sleep as well

  1. Do you think you could regain your continence? If so, do you think it would be easy or difficult from where you are now? What factors are informing your view?

I have no desire to regain control, but I'm sure I wouldn't be able to if I tried. I occasionally pull down the front of my diaper and I am always slightly wet with a small dribble which I think is almost constant. I never really feel the urge to pee but notice I am wet or at least damp constantly and as soon as I step out of the shower (the only time I am undiapered) I will dribble. Breaking wind or a sudden stretch or cough or sneeze will undoubtedly let out a stronger burst of pee as well as a small unexpected BM.

I hope this answers your question
