Guess "Tena" would be the UK equivalent of Depends here (since that's what anyone immediately thinks of when you say "adult diaper").

Even passenger locomotives have them, but the engineer cannot leave the controls while the train is moving.   Here in the US at least, all locomotives have some form of "dead man switch" or alerter (depends on how old the loco is).  In the modern units, when the alerter sounds, you have to press a button to silence it.  Or, the application of any controls also resets the timer.  If no action is performed within a certain time after the alerter sounds, the train goes into emergency braking.   The conductor has it easier as he/she isn't the one actively operating the train.  

From what I've heard recently, even US railroad companies are making things difficult for the crews.  And one idea that I saw was reducing crews from 2 to 1!  Railroading is already dangerous enough - having only 1 person in charge of a 2 mile long freight train (which is quite common these days) is putting that person at too much risk!  At least with 2 crew, if one is injured, you at least have some help near by.  Otherwise, it could take hours for help to arrive depending on where the emergency takes place.  Even here in the over developed north east, there are still plenty of stretches of rail line that are nearly inaccessible by vehicle.

Oh... and if you thought inflation and supply issues were bad now, we might see a railroad strike hit next month..
