Picked up prescriptions today, and had to put back a dollar bag of cookies because one of the scripts was more expensive than it used to be.

A little should not have to choose between cookies and anything! lol

I live in Australia. Prescriptions are about $30 and after about $1500 per year are either free or a few dollars. ANd what is covered by the prescription scheme is almost everything. Epipens are $30. A friend's child suffers from chronic shortness (a boy likely to be under five foot as an adult). He has gone onto an expensive set of daily injections of growth hormones. it is $6000/month and will be needed for 6 years - about $425000 in all. But here, it costs just $30/month. The best news is that it is working and has added 2 inches in 2 months (he is 13)

The american health system is the worst in the western world. The #1 reason for bankruptcy in USA is medical bills. IN Australia, almost nobody has that problem.

My two hospital stays this year totalling 14 days cost $70,000. I paid... nothing. Our medical system has man, many problems, but it looks like heaven compared to most others.

Maybe you guys might want to move over here. And as an added bonus, our politicians are only morons, not criminals, traitors and money-grubbing scumbags.

I tore my left meniscus recently. When the doctor was examining me, she let slip that she wasn't gonna get paid for treating me because I wasn't filing a Workmans Comp claim...

Something's seriously wrong with the entire health-care system

It certainly sounds like it. I dont get the 'socialism' argument. Health care is a human right in a society that can afford it - and it can

I had my prostate removed in November. All the tests done by NHS at no charge to me. I have health insurance (non compulsory) and decided togo private for the operation. Surgeon was £1600, hospital £9400 paid by insurer. At the ripe old age of 70 I don’t have to pay for drugs at all! I live in the UK and NZ, I pay for drugs in NZ not UK, but at $10nz I don't mind and I’m not crazy about cookies so that’s ok!!! And I thought America was the land of the free!!!

Well with trump and Babr actively sabotaging the affordable care act and working in court to remove expreisting condition protections yup it will get worse .but on the bright side trump has promised the superior trump care if we reelect Gm for 4 more years ,McConnel has admitted the G OP Jas no plan nor does trump ,and the funny part about the Addordable care act that trump despises was a GOP idea that they would not act on .President Obam a before leaving office urged trump not to be an idiot and said he could improve on the ACA and call it trump care ,however trump isn't intrested in doing anything other than try and kill it .

Watch Jon Oliver's review of Medicare for all on last week tonight on you tube ,he lays bare all of the talking points against it from the GOP.

I also live in Australia and nearly 4 years ago I had spinal surgery and I didn’t have to pay a cent thank goodness because if I had gone private it would have cost about $20,000 so I’m glad our public system exists even if you do have to wait a while for your surgery

No cookies, not fair! ?   There have been times in my past where I couldn't afford a copay on a prescription- actually had to borrow money for it, and that was with health insurance.  I've seen a lot of commercials on TV for a website called Good RX which is supposed to help find discounts/ coupons for medications. I haven't tried it myself, so I can't say anything about it, but just thought I'd mention it!  Has anyone tried it?

I started taking a drug yesterday that is one tiny pill twice a week (8 pills per month) and the cost through GoodRX is 168.00 per month.  Thank god I have insurance with a maximum limit for generic formulary copay costs.

you  are exactly right again rosalie.. A few years ago my wife had to have triple by pass. even though we had health insurance we ended up paying out over 32,000. then came  my sons rehab. 20,000 this was the final tipping point that forced us into bankruptcy. Destroyed our credit. both my wife and I had high 800 credits scores when we filed for bankruptcy. There was literally no other way out. Something has to be done in the country about health care cost.

Sorry to hear that. We managed to avoid bankruptcy, but only just. It seems your health system is impossibly unaffordable. The rest of the world wonders why you dont have what everyone else has - universal health care. The screams of 'socialism' make no sense.

I have been to Ausi on work many times  years ago, and had to use their health care system out of need one weekend 28 years ago.  It took quite a while to get treated for some leg injury (about 2.5 hr wait) and we were told we would have to pay out of pocket for it as we were not native, but the cost was still very low.  What struck us the most was that even while the large facility in Melbourne was very clean, it was like a century old.

Compared to USA our facilities are very modern, and even on weekends I can go to an urgent clinic and get medical treatment quickly.

With regard to cost, that is another misnomer being spread by those out to destroy the best system in the world.  When I was working, my insurance coverage was top notch and my monthly copay was minimal.  IE I paid about 1/3rd for my copay as what I am paying now for Medicare Part B/D and a supplement for a portion of the coverage I get for my wife and myself(even covered my family while they grew on that same copay). Today I do not have vision, dental, and am limited to where I can go for treatment.

Medicare/Medicaid has succeeded already in closing the vast majority of hospitals in the mid west, and less populated parts of our nation, due to the poor payments they make to facilities(could you survive on 40% of less of your income?)  I have to call ahead now to insure some treatment I may need is covered, or if it has been long enough since my last visit. I continue to be seen by some of my specialists, simply because I am a long term patient, the do not take new medicare clients.

The biggest change I had to make in retirement some 2.5 years ago was losing my private health care plan and going on the govt plan which is all that is left considering the changes made over past 10 years.

I read above  that private plans bankrupt individuals, again something more recent I expect due to all the changes made "for the good of all"  Contrast those stories to what I experienced on my "private insurance"  I had both my knees replaced in one year, one early and the other latter in year.  My out of pocket was ~$2000, my total yearly deductible.  Of course I used my flex plan monies I had acquired tax free for all the incidentals, so it really only cost me what I mentioned.  For this I got each time, my pick of specialists, pick of hospitals involving a 3 day stay each time, and the 6 weeks of PT after each procedure.  And of course, I did both procedures in a single year, and picked the time I wanted to do this based on my schedule.

I shudder when I watch the politics happening in our country today, in an attempt to truly destroy what was built up over several hundred years.  Seems most have forgotten the lessons learned at Plymouth Rock by our founding fathers so many years ago, not surprising  as a lot of history books today have changed that  as well!

I have been to the hospital in Norway many times and done some surgery and never had to pay anything (No insurance)

To the doctor and for medicine prescribed by the doctor, most of us have to pay up to ~$300 out of pocket and rest we get covered/free
If you have very little income you don't need to cover that $300

That's a mood. I've had to step down to lower-quality diapers because one of my mental health prescriptions is more expensive.

Then again, I did choose a performing arts career and only make about $400/wk, so it's my own damn fault.

You know you're really broke when you stuff a plastic grocery bag with old newspapers, cut two holes in the bottom corners, step into it and pull it up around your waist because you've run out of diapers and can't afford to buy any!

Yeah, no cookies, and when you return home, turn of the tv, to see 5 solid minutes of pharmaceutical ads every 10 minutes. “Tell your doctor, you want our drugs!” ?

You can afford newspapers?  ?

And around here, that plastic bag would have cost you 5 cents.
