Baking soda dissloved in water will also counteract excess acid.

Acid reflux is not excess acid, but acid getting into the esophagus because the "trapdoor" to the stomach does not seal properly. The various remedies work by stopping acid flow when there is no need for any more. If the trapdoor sealed properly it would not be reflux. Baking soda and Pepto Abysmal can help but only until the coating wears off. Zantac 150 is OTC and I don't know about famotadine 40 which is what I have been prescrbed

In the past I have had episodes of acid reflux but not in a few years.  It sucks in the middle of the night waking up, choking and not able to breath because it has entered your esophagus.  I can feel when I have excess acid in my stomach and at that point I take a  famotadine 20 tablet, basically Pepcid AC.  It does help and I carry some in a pill bottle with me along with some aspirin, prescription indiocen and a few other pills I may need.  I get the store brand of  famotadine 20 at Walmart or Target and it works fine.  Won't cure acid reflux getting up in your esophagus but it does help with the burning feeling in your stomach from excess acid.  Even drinking a glass of milk will help.

For anyone who hasn't heard Zanyac has been pulled from the market "temporarily" well they figure out how and why as it ages it starts to breakdown to in safe levels of a human carcinogen (cancer causing ) NDMA, at least in North America,i Havent checked on overseas marketing or sales of it .

I have put up with acid reflux for 20 plus yrs, I did the barium test 5-6 yrs ago, and watched my valve let the stuff push back up into my throat, since I had oral cancer, over 10 yrs ago with radiation and chemo, I can't have the surgery to fix the valve. I was told by USC Hospital that it would make my swallowing much worse and it bad enough . I just keep trying anything new,,,, and some will help for a while. But My cancer Dr, just told me that a study has found that the Prilasec is doing damage to the valve,, after long term use, Years of use.....

Milk, 100% juice etc help for a fast put out the fire , but it won't last.

My wife has bile reflux, a cousin of what you are experiencing. It's a side effect of her gastric bypass surgery. When she gets this, she will sit up and eat goldfish crackers with a glass of milk. It always happens at night.

Zantac is Ranitidine as the active ingredient.  Pepcid AC is Famotadine.  While it is possible the active ingredient in both are very similar, I have always looked at any store brand label over the years I'be been using it to make sure I get the Famotadine and not the Ranitidine medication.

My stomach medicine was recalled several months ago. The pharmacy said there was a shortage of the replacement medication the doctor ordered and suggested a store-brand over-the-counter medicine. I was skeptical about how well it would work. It is GREAT! I've been on it for almost three months now and it works better than the prescription meds. (Sorry I can't say the name of the store because it might be regional and I don't want to disclose where I live. It is, however, a major food chain grocery store).

I can add now to my comments earlier,, My Dr had me make a few changes and sooo far so good, I am now using Costco brand of Prevacid, and I also among other chronic issues I have chronic Constipation have had it for about 10 yrs. He also recommended my trying magnesium Citrate it comes in liquid caps and liquid bottle. I am having some improvement there also. But the ingredient in the Costco Prevacid, is Lansoprazole it is working much better than the prilosec, I was taking 40mg a day of that and I used it for over 20 yrs.

Magnesium Citrate? WOW that stuff goes through you like a buzz saw through balsa wood. I have to toake that for a colonscopy. Cleans you out like a brillo pad and leaves your anus just as sore. I would NOT do that unless I HAD to

Well, I have a chronic case of constipation and its much worse with the morphine I don't use the liquid  Magnesium Yet, I get in gel caps, and it really only make my enema a little better I take 4-5 caps with dinner. I can't even have a successful enema WITHOUT it.

If you were to take it in liquid form and drink a lot it would be bad on your insides. But for now it helps, my Dr knows me pretty well, he suggested it ,, I think its better than adding more meds.

I did buy a few bottles of the liquid ,,,,,,, But I have been Chicken to try it ,, the caps are like horse pills, I cant swallow them without applesauce.

Its now apart of my daily routine

My constipation is sooo bad I have been in the hospital a couple times plugged up solid. ones it was a week long stay.

Why nnot use a stool softener like peri colase. I myself would avoid enemas like the plague If I had even the tiniest bit of choice in the matter

I gave up on stool softeners over 5 years ago, they were not any help even back then. I have done enemas every day, soapy water only its been at least 10 years, I have several regular drs, most of them are specialists, I see my Internal med Dr on a 6 month to year basis. He tried to get me off the enemas probably 5 yrs ago, and I ended up in the hospital after a day of projectile vomiting . He said at that point if the enemas are working then, it will be ok, I had talked to him every visit about it. He is the one that looks inside me with a scope when I need it. I trust  him after he seen my problems was when he became ok with it.

I do thank all of you for the feedback and believe me if any of them would work for me I would Gladly do them, I just have gone through so much with the history of oral cancer, that limits what can be done, to I am unable to really eat properly because of the cancer I don't have even half of mouth opening, and no back teeth to chew with, can't eat anything if it has pepper or anything spicier in it, and the list changes almost weekly things I ate a week ago set my mouth on fire,,,, and chronic pain, chronic constipation you can read my past threads its a constant thing, we call dinner the 4 letter word, we don't actually use the word. But my wife and I rarely are able to eat the same dinner. Breakfast isn't bad I am getting Sick of eggs, but I can still eat them. I try not to be negative staying Positive is what we do, because God saved my wife and me from the cancer over 10 years age and he's go a reason. There are still a lot of positive things in life.

Had a Doctor-to-pharmacy communication issue this week that caused me to run out of my acid reflux medicine. Within a day I was puking up whatever I ate and having accidents caused by excess acid liquefying anything that hit my stomach. Amazing how quickly the medicine wore off completely.

Back on it now, and doing better, though slightly nauseous, which should pass soon as the meds build back up in my system.

I feel ya. Reflux sucks.
