I put both on. I use the cream as a barrier against wetness, against the skin, and the powder keeps everything fresh

Cream creates a barrier for wetness, or potential rashes from fecal exposure to skin. Powder will not protect as well as cream for wetness and messing as cream will.

Should you always use powder or cream when wearing a diaper. Sorry it’s probably a dumb question but I’m still new to this.

I use neither.  I don't like to smell like baby powder and I usually only wear for maybe 3 or 4 hours at best 2 or 3 mornings a week.  Even when I wear all day out of town shopping or running errands I don't use creams or powder, even though I will use 2 or 3 different diapers for the day.  When I get home or done wearing diapers I bathe and clean up good with soap and hot water.  I don't wear every day or 24/7 though like some people do.

I use Johnson's cornstarch-based baby powder with no cream because cream can block the pores of a cloth diaper and make it harder to wash them.

I always use Vaseline as a protective barrier, especially if you plan on wetting or wearing a messy diaper. And sometimes I will use a little baby powder on top but not normally.

You just need to experiment to see what works best for you.

If you are planning on staying in a wet and or messy diaper for an extended period of time,  cremes are best to use. Powder is good for short term and help reduce chaffing and also smell better.
