The last two groups played their final games today.

@Les Lea's Japan 0-1 @Liam's Poland

Japan needed to win this game to secure qualification whilst Poland had already been eliminated but were hoping to go home with some pride.

The only goal in the game came in the 59th minute when Jed Bednarek got on the end of a free kick and was able to steer the ball home.

With Japan failing to get a point they were now relying on Senegal losing to have a chance of qualifying.

@dlsafrica's Senegal 0-1 @ABDL's Colombia

Colombia knew that a win would mean finishing first in their group and they will be happy to have gotten it with a single goal.

The goal came in the 74th minute when Yerry Mina got on the end of a corner and headed the ball into the net.

With both Japan and Senegal losing 1-0 there was a first in World Cup history which will be written in the standings.

FINAL GROUP H STANDINGS:

@ABDL's Colombia win the group with six points. Second place was so close between @Les Lea's Japan an@dlsafrica's Senegal that World Cup officials had to do something never done before. With the same amount of points and the same goal difference Japan was placed ahead of Senegal by virtue of having received fewer yellow cards in the groups! Senegal go home but will feel very unlucky to do so whilst @Liam's Poland finished a very disappointing last place, their last day win will do little to ease the pain.

---

@baby frost's Panama 1-2 @WetDad's Tunisia

Both these teams were already eliminated but there was a chance for one of them to go home with a win.

The opening goal came for Panama in the 33rd minute when a Jose Luis Rodrigues shot deflected off Yassine Mariah and flew into the goal.

The Tunisians equalised in the 51st minute through a goal by Ben Youssef and Wahbi Khazri scored the winner in the 66th minute.

@Dubious's England 0-1 @RainbowEclipse's Belgium

With both teams on the same amount of points and goal difference the winner of this game would win the group. Both teams made a lot of changes. England rested eight of their starting line-up whilst Belgium rested nine.

Adnan Januzaj scored the only goal of the game in the 50th minute when he danced inside England's Danny Rose and bent the ball home well.

FINAL GROUP G STANDINGS:

@RainbowEclipse's Belgium win the group with three wins out of three and finish top of the group. @Dubious's England finish second in the group as a result of their loss to Belgium. @baby frost's Panama and @WetDad's Tunisia will both be going home.

The first two knockout games were today and we had ten goals! From now on the loser is eliminated from the competition, winning is all that matters.

@WeaselDiaperBoy's France 4-3 @Princess Alice's Argentina

The pick of the round of sixteen was this meeting between two traditionally great football powerhouses.

France started on the front foot and in the 9th minute Antoine Griezmann hit the bar from a free kick. Two minutes later and Kylian M'Bappe was fouled in the penalty area after a long run and Antoine Griezmann stepped up to put the penalty away and give the French the lead.

Argentina equalised brilliantly in the 41st minute when the ball was worked to Angel Di Maria 25 yards from goal. He took a touch before unleashing a rocket into the top corner to level the scores. A world class goal.

In the 48th minute Argentina took the lead when an initially cleared free kick fell to Lionel Messi his shot took a deflection of an Argentinian defender that seemed to be trying to get out of the way. Gabriel Mercado was credited with the goal putting the South Americans in front.

France equalised in the 57th minute when a cross went all the way across the box and Argentinian full-back Cristian Pavon hit a thunderous volley with the outside of his foot. The curl made it impossible for the goalkeeper to save and if you only watch one goal from the tournament you'll do well to find a better one than this one.

France went 3-2 up in the 64th minute when a Lucas Hernandez cross wasn't cleared and Kylian M'Bappe pounced to fire the ball under the goalkeeper and put the French in control.

France seemingly put the game to bed in the 68th minute when a lovely passing move ended with Kylian M'Bappe grabbing his second goal and putting the Europeans 4-2 up.

In the 90+2nd minute Argentina gave themselves a flicker of a chance when a Lionel Messi long ball found Sergio Aguero who headed the ball home to make it 4-3 with a minute or so left.

Argentina were unable to equalise the game and are eliminated from the tournament. They never performed as well as was hoped and their exit will be disappointing for the country and especially to Lionel Messi since this is expected to be his last attempt to win the World Cup.

@Mcraft's Uruguay 2-1 @oliver d's Portugal

Uruguay have been looking good so far in this competition and they got off to the perfect start in the 7th minute. Luis Suarez hit an inch perfect long ball to the back post where it was met by Edinson Cavani ho headed it home to give the South Americans the lead.

Portugal were struggling to break down the well organised Uruguayan team but they managed to equalise from a corner in the 55th minute. centre back Pepe spun clear of his man in the penalty box and headed the ball across the goal and into the net.

The parity didn't last long and in the 62nd minute Uruguay re-took the lead when, following a break, the ball was played across the edge of the box and Edinson Cavani stroked it into the corner with a first time shot.

There was no lack of effort for the Portuguese but Uruguay was too organised for them and they couldn't draw level again. Portugal will now be heading home following a tournament that often seemed like Ronaldo trying to single-handedly drag his team through the tournament.

---

In one day arguably the two best players in the world Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have both been eliminated from the tournament!

Two more knockout games today and no shortage of drama!

@PrincessTinklePants's Spain 1-1 @Somelildude's Russia (Russia Win 3-4 on Penalties)

Spain got off to a perfect start against the hosts when they took the lead in the 11th minute. A free kick was swung towards the back post and Sergei Ignashevich was too busy wrestling with a striker to see the ball coming in and it deflected into the net for an own goal.

Russia sent the crowd into a frenzy in the 41st minute when Gerard Pique handled the ball in his own area giving away a penalty in the process. Artem Dzuyuba stepped up to confidently put the penalty away.

Spain dominated possession for the whole game and made well over 1000 passes. They couldn't break through though and after extra time failed to produce any goals the game went to penalty kicks.

Koke and Iago Aspas were the unfortunate people to miss their spot kicks and Russia pull off a huge upset to send the Spanish home much earlier than expected.

@Elfy's Denmark 1-1 @Firefly 35's Croatia (Croatia Win 3-2 on Penalties)

Denmark took the lead in this game after just 1 minute when Matias Jorgensen managed to get the ball into the goal following a long throw.

The lead didn't last long and in the 4th minute the scores were level again. Mario Mandzukic was the beneficiary of some panicked Danish defending and he fired the equaliser home.

The game was dominated by two goalkeepers who were on top form and despite numerous attempts neither team could score another goal. Croatia had the best chance in the 114th minute when Luka Modric took a penalty but even this couldn't break the deadlock as Kaspar Schmichael saved it and took the game to a penalty shoot-out.

Both sides missed penalties but it was Nicolai Jorgensen who missed the deciding kick that sends Croatia into the next round.

Another two knockout matches today.

@carsfan's Brazil 2-0 @AbabeBill's Mexico

Brazil were the better team and worthy winners in this match although it took a long time to find the breakthrough.

It was the 50th minute when Brazil took the lead through a goal by Neymar, there was wonderful build-up play including the goal scorer passing with a nice back heel. Willian got the assist with a pass across the box and Neymar was on hand for the easy tap-in.

Brazil sealed the game in the 88th minute when Neymar ran through on goal. His shot was saved and was probably going wide until Firminho gave it the finishing touch.

@RainbowEclipse's Belgium 3-2 @Les Lea's Japan

All the action was in the second half here and Japan took the lead in the 47th minute when a scything pass from Gaku Shibasaki found Genki Haraguchi the midfielder took a touch before firing the ball home to give the Japanese the lead.

Japan doubled their lead in the 52nd minute when the ball broke to Takashi Inui. He took a touch and then fired a rocket into the net to give the underdogs a 2-0 lead.

Belgium started their comeback in the 69th minute in fortuitous circumstances. Japan failed to properly clear a corner and the ball eventually came to defender Jan Vertonghen who attempted to head it back across the goal. He got his header wrong and the ball looped up and somehow dropped into the goal to give Belgium a lifeline.

Belgium equalised in the 74th minute. Another corner found Japan struggling to clear their lines and when Edin Hazard swung the ball back into the box he found Marouane Fellaini who nodded home from close range.

Belgium scored the winner in the 90+5th minute when Nacer Chadli finished a quick Belgium counter attack to give Belgium the dramatic last minute winner.

The final two Round of sixteen games were played today...

@BabyTau's Sweden 1-0 @jesse78's Switzerland

A very tight game with both teams facing their best chance in years to advance deeper into the tournament. The only goal of the game came in the 66th minute when Swedish midfielder Emil Forsberg took a speculative shot that took a huge deflection off Manuel Akanji and left the Swedish 'keeper stranded.

That proved to be the only goal of the game and moved Sweden through to the quarter finals.

@ABDL's Colombia 1-1 @Dubious's England (England win 4-3 on penalties)

England were also looking to improve on recent history and move deeper into the tournament but they had in front of them a very good Colombia side who would fancy their chances as well.

England got the better of the opening exchanges although the game quickly descended into lots of fouls and niggles with Colombia seemingly trying to drag England down to their level. All of the fouls eventually resulted in a penalty for England when Harry Kane was bundled over in the box. The World Cup's top goal scorer, Harry Kane, stepped up and fired the ball down the middle to give England the lead in the 57th minute.

It looked like England had managed to see off the danger and were perhaps looking ahead to the next round when they suddenly found themselves pegged back by the South Americans. A corner was swung in during injury time and defender Yerry Mina rose highest to head the ball into the net and send the game to extra time.

The extra time period was intense but neither side could find a breakthrough and the game headed to a penalty shoot-out. England fans have been here many times before, England had lost every single World Cup penalty shoot-out they have been involved in and the weight of a nation fell on the five penalty takers.

When Jordan Henderson missed his penalty England fans would be forgiven for thinking they had seen all this before but two Colombians missed the next two kicks and left England with match point. It was England substitute Erik Dier who stepped up and smashed the final penalty home to give England the win and send them through to the quarter finals where they will meet Sweden.

The first two quarter finals were played today.

@Mcraft's Uruguay 0-2 @WeaselDiaperBoy's France

The first quarter final had to wait 40 minutes for the first goal and it came from France via an Antoine Griezmann free kick which found Raphael Varane who steered an excellent header all the way through the box and into the goal.

The provider turned goal scorer in the 61st minute when Antoine Griezmann hit a speculative shot from outside the penalty area. The Uruguayan goalkeeper looked to have it covered but he made a mistake and punched the ball up and over himself to double France's lead.

France saw out the rest of the game and became the first team to book a semi final spot.

@carsfan's Brazil 1-2 @RainbowEclipse's Belgium

Brazil missed a few early chances and were made to pay in the 13th minute. A corner was whipped in and flicked off the head of defender Vincent Kompany. The ball then hit Brazillian midfielder Fernandinho and wrong-footed the goalkeeper to give Belgium the lead.

Belgium's second goal came in the 31st minute when the Brazillians were hit on the counter by Belgium. Romelu Lukaku charged through the midfield with the ball before playing it to the edge of the box where Kevin De Bruyne was waiting. The midfielder took a touch and then fired home from outside the box.

Brazil received a lifeline in the 76th minute when they were able to get on the scoreboard. Phillippe Coutinho chipped the ball into the box where Renato Augusto was left free to nod the ball home.

Brazil piled on the pressure but were unable to find a second goal. The favourites of the tournament are eliminated and will go home wondering how such a talented bunch of individuals didn't go further.

The first semi-final is set... @WeaselDiaperBoy's France will play @RainbowEclipse's Belgium.

The last two quarter finals were played today.

@BabyTau's Sweden 0-2 @Dubious's England

England qualified for their first World Cup semi-final sine 1990 today as their young team continued to defy expectations.

The first goal came in the 30th minute when Ashley Young crossed a corner into the box and  Harry Maguire powered the header into the goal. It was his first international goal and a great time to get it.

The lead was doubled in the 59th minute when a Jesse Lingard cross into the box found Dele Alli who powered his header home to secure the win for the English.

@Somelildude's Russia 2-2 @Firefly 35's Croatia (Croatia win 4-3 on Penalties)

The hosts have already far exceeded expectations at this World Cup and they got an excellent start in their quarter final match. They took the lead in the 31st minute when Denis Cheryshev hit a stunning goal from outside the box to give Russia the lead.

Croatia equalised in the 39th minute when Mario Mandzukic found Andrej Kramaric with the latter stooping to head the ball into the goal.

That was it for normal time and the game went into extra time as they tried to find a winner. Domagoj Vida got on the end of a corner in the 101st minute and his header eventually found it's way into the goal. It looked like it would be enough to send the Baltic nation into the final four.

Russia equalised in the 115th minute when a free kick found Mario Fernandes who flicked the ball into the net to level the scores and take the game to penalties.

Just like in the Round of Sixteen it was Ivan Rakitic who stepped up and scored the winning penalty for Croatia to send them through to the semi finals.

The two semi final matches will be:

@WeaselDiaperBoy's France Vs. @RainbowEclipse's Belgium

@Dubious's England Vs. @Firefly 35's Croatia

that really sucked [emoji20]
I have a lot of mixed loyalties in World Cup football. I like England, Spain, and Germany, but some of my Swedish friends were really looking forward to seeing their team go further. This is the first cup that I am cheering France on. [emoji12]

Am I the only person who was surprised that Croatia beat Russia?

Sweden - England was the first match I watched, but only cause someone turned on the TV at the birthday party..
The right setting is an English pub with a pint in your hand. It is a lot more exciting when you are around serious fans who are having a good time and also have the patience to explain the game to a newbie.

Well, I'm not a newb when it comes to football/soccer, I just lost interest cause the sport is bordering on slavery, where my "local" team, barely have any local players left, and its the same with about any other team

Was a lot more fun when 90% of the players actually were from the town the team originates

So the World Cup has finally come to an end with two semi-finals and the final itself.

@WeaselDiaperBoy's France 1-0 @Mcraft's Uruguay

France were just able to edge this encounter thanks to defender Samuel Umtiti's early goal. France booked a final and a chance to win their second World Cup.

@Firefly 35's Croatia 2-1 @Dubious's England

England were in their first semi-final since 1990 and got off to a fantastic start when full back Kieran Trippier scored directly from a free kick with just five minutes played. The England fans were already dreaming of Moscow.

A goal in the 68th minute from Ivan Perisic sent the game to extra time and it looked clear that England were beginning to struggle. They were made to pay in extra time when Mario Mandzukic latched on to a defensive error and fired the ball home to break English hearts and end quite a trip for the English.

It was quite a strange World Cup for a youthful England team. They showed a lot of promise but came up short each time they faced a team of equal stature to them, it's a good base for this team to launch from and hopefully the team will improve over the coming years.

And on to the final!

@WeaselDiaperBoy's France 4-2 @Firefly 35's Croatia

Croatia were clear and definite underdogs here as they played their first World Cup final. They got off to the worse start as well when a French free kick in the 17th minute resulted in Mario Mandzukic flicking the ball into his own net and giving the French the lead.

Croatia levelled the game in the 27th minute when France failed to clear their lines following a free kick and Ivan Perisic brought the ball down and blasted it into the goal.

France regained the lead in the 38th minute when Croatia's goal scorer was judged to have handled the ball in the penalty box. Antoinne Griezmann stepped up for France and converted the penalty to give Les Bleu a lead going into half time.

Croatia were piling on the pressure at the start of the second half but it lead to a France counter-attack. Kylian M'Bappe brought the ball down the pitch and his cross eventually found Paul Pogba. The erratic French midfielder had his first shot blocked before his second was curled home brilliantly to make it 3-1.

Provider turned goalscorer in the 65th minute as Kylian M'Bappe scored with a rocket from outside the area. This made the score 4-1 and France had their hands on the trophy already.

Croatia were given a lifeline in the 69th minute when France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris got to casual with the ball and was tackled by Mario Mandzukic with the ball deflecting into the goal.

It was the final goal of the game though and the plucky minnows Croatia fell at the last hurdle. Their achievements at the World Cup were phenomenal and there is no shame losing to this France team who are now confirmed as the best in the world!

Congratulations to @WeaselDiaperBoy who won the sweepstakes by drawing a team that, although given a good chance of victory, were not favourites. I will be sending you a message in a few moments to confirm the £25 prize and what you want to do with it :)

As a few extra little pieces of information...

The Golden Boot (Top Goalscorer) award went to England's Harry Kane. He struggled as the tournament went on but five goals in England's opening two games got them out of the group and launched them towards the semi-final. He will no doubt be critical that the goals dried up after those opening two games and he only scored one (a penalty) after them.

The Golden Ball (Best Player) award was given to 32-year-old Croatian midfielder Luka Modric. Once described as too small and shy to be a footballer the Real Madrid maestro has proven his worth a thousand times over for all the club sides he has played for. His tireless work rate and gorgeous passing ability drove Croatia to the final and he very rightly was named as the star player of the tournament.
