I have been thinking about getting plastic pants as a extra level of security to avoid leaks.

Whst is good and what should I stay away from when buying?

I do something similar to drynot and dlnoir, using terry lined plastic pants over disposables.

Safest to use tape around the diaper so it don't come lose and/or use a tight onesie, with those 2 I have never leaked in any diaper, without taping I usually leak in any diaper

any and all disposable diaper will become lose with movement

I too am a side sleeper and I've tried placing booster pads at the sides and it works, though it does take some getting used to. Also, taping the sides with packing or other tape will cut down on leaks also. Using a vinyl or rubber pant over

It's tough, especially if you're a heavy wetter - i use a combination of 1) a good AB diaper like the bambino magnifico, 2) a booster, like the NorthShore XL, and 3) a bed pad, also from NorthShore. Terry-lined plastic pants are also nice, i use Babykins. Combine these and you won't end up with wet sheets or mattress!
