Life Changes With Two More (Private Justagirl4fun)

Recommended Posts

John and Mary Collins were very loving parents. Mary got pregnant when she was 24, being delighted when her baby girl, Carrie was born. Carrie was completely normal and healthy for the first few months, but when she was about 16 months, she started to regress and not develop fast enough. They were devastated, thinking they had done everything right. When Carrie was 3 she was diagnosed with Autism. The only explanation the couple could come up with was that the MMR vaccine given to Carrie at age 14 months, caused this. No matter how much the doctors and specialists argued and tried to change the Collins' minds, the couple still believed that the vaccine caused their child's autism.

Adam opened the door and squatted down to the girls' level. "Hey there. I'm your Uncle Adam," he said, smiling warmly at his nieces. "Come on in."

Addison whimpered and shoved a thumb in her mouth as she moved behind the social worker, her big blue eyes hidden by a tangle of red hair.

Jane smiled kindly at her nieces, not being able to help but feel sorry for them. "Hey it's okay. We don't bite. I'm your Aunt Jane."

The social worker gently pushed Addison inside the house, following her with Carrie in tow with a slight tug to get her to stay nearby.

Addison moved to Carrie's side and took her hand before mumbling around the thumb still in her mouth. "I wanna go home."

"Well, what can you tell us about Carrie? We know she's autistic, but it's a pretty wide spectrum...what's she like? How severe is it?"

Carrie squeezed her sister's hand. She was just as nervous and upset as she was. Though she usually had a lot of trouble interacting with others, she had no problem with her sister.

Jane smiled and went to the fridge. She figured peanut butter and jelly was something any kid would like. "Honey do you want a PB&J?"

Carrie gave Adam a quizzical look, unsure of who he was and what he meant. She did want to see her room though, hoping that where he'd be taking her was to the room she had only the week before, before having to be uprooted. She nodded and looked around, unsure where to go in the unfamiliar house.

Jane smiled and whipped up a quick sandwich, cutting it into quarters and set it in front of her niece. "Here honey, eat up. I can make another one if you're still hungry."

Carrie followed along cautiously and slowly, using all her might to get up the stairs, not being used to them after living in a one story bungalow. Once upstairs, she wandered around, letting out a small shriek when she nearly got run over by Ashley running out of her room.

Addie pulled herself to her knees in the chair and scarfed down half the sandwich before looking up at Jane. "Milk?"

Adam dropped the suitcases and scooped Ashley up. "Hey, peanut, this is your cousin Carrie. Can you say hi to Carrie?"

"Sure sweetie." Jane grabbed a sippy cup from the cupboard and filled it with milk, handing it to the girl. "After that do you wanna see your room and meet your cousins?"

Ashley tilted her head at the girl, knowing she hadn't seen her before. She thought she knew all her cousins. "Hi Cawee!" She said smiling, wiggling down and running over to hug the girl as she does with everyone, much to Carrie's discomfort.

Addie nodded and took a long drink, only pausing once she was out of breath. Then she gulped down the rest and handed the cup back to Jane. "All done."

Adam ruffled Ashley's hair. "It's okay, peanut. Carrie's just a little scared right now. Why don't you go find mommy?" he suggested, hoping to give Carrie a few minutes to regroup.

Addie nodded. "More." She was usually much more talkative, but still feeling overwhelmed and uncharacteristically shy. Her face brightened a bit when she saw the little girl, who appeared to be close to her own age, and she flashed a brief smile. "Addie. Who you?"

Adam gave Carrie some time to calm down. "It's okay, honey. I know this is all strange for you." He put a hand on her shoulder and guided her gently down the hall to a cheery yellow room with two beds - each covered in a colorful quilt. "This is your new bedroom. You can pick which bed you want."

Ashley smiled at Addie's willingness to see her, much difference from Carrie. "Ashey!" She said happily, running over to hug the the girl while Jane made another sandwich.

"Two! Das dis many!" Ashley said, holding up two fingers, getting the amount right for once. "How old you?"

Carrie nodded, after all the stress from today, she was pretty hungry. She followed behind Adam like a lost puppy, dragging the quilt behind her.

Addie bit into half,of the sandwich and offered the other half to Ashley. "You want some?"

Adam made a sandwich for Carrie and got her some milk, then checked the time. "Amelia should be home soon," he said. She had gone to the summer rec program but their neighbor, who had a kid the same age, would be bringing her home.

Ashley smiled and took the other half of Addie's sandwich, holding it awkwardly. She took small bites, feeling unsure of her new surroundings. Even though she was starving, she didn't really want to eat. She put the barely touched sandwich back down on her sister's plate.

(Gah! I'll redo it. I thought she was sharing with Carrie. Massive brain fart.)

Ashley shook her head, not being very hungry after having a lot of goldfish not that long ago. "No Fanks."

"Good, I want her to be able to meet her cousins before it's too close to dinner and bedtime." Jane said.
