Raising Our Girls

Diana got Mary changed out of her diaper and into panties, then brought her downstairs. "I think we better get some lunch, don't you?" she asked. It was a bit late for lunch, but dinner time was a ways off.

Mary nodded and smiled. "Pen choose!" She said brightly. For her, things were mostly one syllable, so her sister was Pen. It was Penny's turn to choose lunch.

"Penny, what do you want for lunch?"

"Grilled cheese! An' alphabet soup," Penny answered.

Mary nodded quickly. "Play with Pen!" She said happily. She loved playing with her little sister, even though developmentally, her sister was far ahead.

Diana got Mary settled in her special chair and went to make lunch. "So, what do you want to play?" Penny asked.

Mary paused. She wasn't really sure of what she wanted to do at the moment. "What you want?"

"Um...what about Play Doh?" Penny suggested. Mary wasn't that great at making stuff, but they'd done a puzzle and played with Magna Tiles the day before. "Or I can get the princesses..." The girls had a big castle and a rather impressive collection of small, plastic princesses with snap-on clothes that were easier for Mary to dress than regular dolls.

"Doh!" Mary said happily. "Want pink." Pink was Mary's favorite color right now, and loved anything princess related or slightly girly.

Penny ran to get the Play Doh. She returned and opened the pink for Mary before sitting down and opening the green for herself.

Mary smiled and thanked her sister before she started to squish the play doh into assorted shapes.

Penny rolled hers into a snake. She carefully sculpted the face, even making yellow eyes and white fangs for it. "Ooo, watch out, the snake is gonna get you!" She squealed as she moved it towards Mary.

Mary squealed and giggled. She pulled her pink snowman away from the snake. "Nuh! No get man!" She said happily.

"I'm gonna get you!" Penny threatened in what she imagined to be a scary snake voice as she inched it closer to the snowman. "I'm gonna eat you up!"

Mary couldn't help but giggle. She kept moving her snowman away, until she flung it when her hand gave way.

Penny burst out laughing as the snoisnoiwman hit the floor, then made the snake gobble it up. "He's dead," she said apologetically as she handed the mangled snowman back to Mary.

"So, how did the skating go?" Diana asked John as she flipped the sandwiches.

Mary frowned a bit. She wasn't upset about the snowman so much, but hated when her hand would give out constantly. She smiled a little and started to remodel it into something else when she froze and started to stare off into space and then started to shake, going into a bigger seizure than earlier.

Diana shook her head. "Out of the question. It's way too expensive. There are too many things we need for Mary, we can't be blowing hundreds of dollars on skating. With your schedule, I doubt you'd be home in time to take her, and I can't be dragging Mary in and out of the rink. I hate to be like this, I really do, but it's just not feasible, and it wouldn't be fair to Mary to make her watch when she can't participate."

Penny watched as Mary stared vacantly. She knew this was a type of seizure, but not the kind anyone got too worried about. She started yelling,when she began convulsing. "Mommy! Daddy! Mary's havin' a big seizure!"

John rushed into the living room and looked at his phone. He watched his older daughter sieze and convulse uncontrollably. He felt terrible for his daughter when she had to go through seizures.

By the time the seizure stopped there was smoke coming from the kitchen. "Shit!" Diana muttered as she tried to get Mary cleaned up a bit. "Honey, you're gonna have to come up with something else for lunch, because that was the last of the bread," she said to John after he ran to turn the stove off.

John ran into the kitchen and turned off the smoke alarm and started to air out the kitchen. He threw the burnt bread out into the yard for birds to eat. "Penny honey what about Mac and cheese?"

"Yeah, that's okay," Penny agreed reluctantly.

John quickly made the meal and served it on the table. "We'll

Diana waited for Mary to come to, then brought her upstairs to clean her up and change her clothes. "You want to eat, baby, or you want to lie down for a bit?" she asked once Mary was dressed.

Mary rubbed her face a little, still being a bit woozy. "Down mama." She mumbled, not having any sort of appetite after throwing up.

"Okay, baby." Diana put Mary in bed and sat next to her, holding her hand.

Penny sat at the table and dug into her mac and cheese. "So, did you ask mom about skating?" she asked hopefully after scarfing down half of her food.
