Softex was I believe a latex coated fabric.

Moisture could not pass through the extremely fine pores of the fabric; yet air could. Amazing what was available in 1939!

I heard, I think it was the History Channel, that the South American Indian ppncho was made from wool that was so tightly woven that it was waterproof and was a rain garment
