Compulsory National Service... England

I worked at a minimum wage job for almost six years before getting canned (fired); I haven't lost any sleep over it since the senior partners wouldn't issue raises to those who have been there every six months.

I'm right after reading this thing three times over, and just in case I'm reading it wrong (hey, I slept four hours, give me a break): this applies even to people already in employment, right?

I looked at the law with the link and my thoughts are that this is insane. I'm an American or I guess a Yank to you but the first thing that hit me was that this is labeled a "scheme". I know know we speak the same language but there are differences because this term has negative implications on this side of the pond. Just to be sure I looked up the word scheme in the Merriam-Webster dictionary and number three is a perfect description of this plan.

Like the US, the UK has become a socialist state. President Obama was contemplating the same thing. In America, there are more people on some form of public assistance, than people working in the private sector. No government generates wealth. Government only confiscates wealth. So they either need people to work in government positions or they need it increase taxes. People say slavery was gone from America over 100 years ago. Ironically, a form of slavery reared its ugly head in America in 1913 when incomes became taxed. This appears to be law in the UK. Look out America, you could be next

I'm probably going to be one of the few people who actually think this is a good idea, but I do have many reasons. When I was 16 to 19 I really, really think that both myself and all of my school-mates and friends who were in work would have hugely benefited from some kind of national service scheme. I get that everyone is different and there needs to be various "programs" (some maybe more like apprentice schemes, some more like military service), but I do think there should be some common "away from your parents and existing social circle for a year, with a structured program that helps instil core life skills and values" compulsory service program for all young adults. I'd like to see this as a one year program required, by law, to be taken between the 16th and 19th birthday of the individual, not less than 200 miles from their primary residence. There would be very few exemptions permitted (i.e. disabled people would not be automatically exempt), and exemptions would need to be for something really serious (e.g. terminal illness, being paralysed etc.) - probably signed off by the home office directly.

There are so many problems with this scheme. I wonder how many of the politicians that voted for this will have children that never serve due to "connections". I also find myself wondering if these connected people will serve but get the preferential positions so they get the 10% break on the income tax. I also find myself wondering if the government will end up spending more money in the end because of the hardships on families losing a good income for a minimum wage one. I guess in the end history will be a somewhat accurate judge on that.

I agree. I do. My friend asked me how I made mash from a potato the other day.... She's 28. But kids are in education until they're 18. They could be taught all that then...... I was the deputy manager of a preschool at 19 and the manager and married at 21..... Really wouldn't have been happy to be shipped off somewhere at to learn life skills. Especially not as I'd been taking care of myself and my younger siblings from the age of 10.... I taught myself how to cook, wash clothes, iron etc. If a 10 year old can teach herself to work a washing machine, use an iron, and cook food. Then I'm sure a 19 year old can manage if they put their mind to it. But some wont. Because they're lazy.

Well the word on the street is the Bill has 'bombed' pardon the pun. The second reading will be at the end of the session, meaning it will not be allowed time, or re-scheduled. This is a parliamentary tactic to shelve something or put it to the back of the que.
