Just Hours Left - A 24 Hour Petition To Stop Uganda's Kill The Gays Bill

The Ugandan Parliament is set to pass a brutal law that may carry the death penalty for homosexuality. If they do, thousands of Ugandans could face execution or life imprisonment -- just for being gay.

We've helped stop this bill before, and we can do it again. After a massive global outcry last year, Ugandan President Museveni blocked the bill's progress. But political unrest is mounting in Uganda, and religious extremists in Parliament are hoping confusion and violence in the streets will distract the international community from a second push to pass this hate-filled law. We can show them that the world is still watching.

We have no time to lose. Let’s get one million voices against Uganda's horrific anti-gay law in the next 24 hours -- we'll deliver it to Uganda's leaders and key countries. Click to take action, then share widely!

Update: 23 November 2012

The pressure is working! There are unconfirmed reports that the death penalty clause has been removed from the bill in committee. But it could be added back in at any moment and Ugandans still face life in prison for love. Let's keep growing our call!

I can understand why one could be cynical, but A: This worked before, back in April - pushing the bill back more than seven months. B: It has over half its target already, with more pouring in by the second. C: This is the same falsified, debunked trite you hear in the Middle East - HURR, THEY'RE COMIN' AFTER OUR KIDS (even though the bill even applies to teenagers). These are human lives at stake. Let's make sure these barbarians don't get the "Christmas present" they've been clamouring for.

Outsiders petitioning a flawed government like that of Uganda is going to do exactly nothing to stop the bill. In fact, it could have the opposite effect, many Ugandans are against homosexuality, and will likely see this as Westerners interfering in Ugandan internal politics.

What will work, is getting our governments on board with what the UK is doing, threatening to cut financial aid if the bill passes. In fact, I think respect for all human rights should be a condition to any foreign aid by any western powers.

In the OP I mentioned that this happened before, in April, and the petition (same organisation, same site, with twice the time period) was part of the effort alongside other condemnation - which will still exist if this thing reaches 1 million and beyond.

...And you don't think they'll see other governments cutting aid as an excuse for exacerbating attitudes? You think that's going to improve the internal situation any more than this would? You think they won't see that as 'Westerners' trying to impose their values?

Diplomatic pressure is a lot different than pressure from private citizens who don't have any direct influence upon Uganda.

I doubt it was the petition that stopped the bill in April, it's more likely that diplomatic pressure from the West threatening to cut off foreign aid. Several foreign governments had threatened to cut off foreign aid when the bill was first proposed in 2009. Many African nations can't survive without Western assistance, Uganda's government knows that, they also know they don't have the stature or position in the world to say this is the West interfering in their internal policy, considering they are still heavily reliant upon the West for much of their development. If this bill passes, Uganda could face being ostracized again, as if it was back in the days of Idi Amin.

Perhaps Uganda does not have the capacity to self-govern. This is not racist. If say, one of the smaller European nations, say The Netherlands decided it would start burning women alive for witchcraft, would the international community not have a moral obligation to step in, and rule over The Netherlands until a more enlightened people, capable of self-government emerge?

The problem is not that the Ugandans are not intelligent enough, it is that they let theocratic matters determine their government's actions.

The petition should not be to ask Uganda to do anything. The question should be what should the world do to Uganda if they are dumb enough to pass this bill.

Genocide of any form should be challenged by those who defend freedom. Theocracy is not an excuse for mass-murder... ask Hitler.

Unfortunately we have set a dangerous precedent with our environmental policies. We refuse to be energy dependent, so we turn to the Middle East for oil. The Middle East by and large has a policy to shoot gays on sight, and we can't just go to war with half of the Middle East.

And thus, Uganda will get a pass too. Want to stop this? Drill for oil here, so we can take out these scumbags everywhere. End rant.
