Incontinence And Flying

Recommended Posts

Ok, so me and my partner are thinking we may go on holiday to Canada sometime next year for a holiday.

Basically my question is... going through security and everything, will I need to explain why I'm wearing what I'm wearing and also will i need a doctors certificate to back it up?

I don't think you'll need a doctor's letter, but, as in the story with the old lady that got taken to the back to inspect her Depends, it could be that you have to strip. After all, the TSA could think that you want to smuggle some C4 disguised as SAP onto the flight.

I've only ever worn once on a plane, and that was some 6 years ago, before all this security hype, and it was an intra-european flight (UK to mainland Europe). I was scanned then, but noone said anything.

I was also scanned while wearing in London on entering an Embassy. I had a change and wipes in a plastic bag inside another bag with my paperwork and that was, of course, inspected. The guard (big, proper guard material guy) looked through the stuff, grinned almost to the point of laughing out loud and exclaimed that there was a nappy in there! At which point I blushed slightly, but not as much as he did when his (I assume) supervisor (a woman, 'office dragon' style) turned around on hearing him snigger, looked at the stuff and shot him the most evil 'you can see me later to pick up your P45' look. She nudged him aside, put the bag through and wished me a good day. The guard looked seriously unwell as I passed through.

I don't know if these experiences help you with your travel, but I would suggest that you just keep cool about it. Don't wear anything baby-style or have a dummy/ pacifier in your hand luggage or you risk ending up on youtube. Just keep it to the incontinence side and stick to it and all will go well, even if you have to change.

Your partner knows, does she/he?

I travel international all the time. Being incontinent, I do wear and carry changes with me on the plane....Never been questioned.

Don't worry about it, they don't care....enjoy your trip.

You absolutely won't have a problem. I always fly diapered and I've been on over fifty flights in the last year. Even if you go through a porno scanner say nothing till they ask. They don't listen to anything you say till the scan is done, then you explain what it is.

A doc's note would be overkill and useless as they are still going to scan if they want.

Yes, I do. The thought about this topic suddenly hit me as I've not really done any international flying since the more recent wave of security tightening and I thought it might be a concern.

Thanks for addressing it, folks, you're all very helpful :)

Last time I flew, which was like a month ago, they just sent me through the full body scanners and that was it. They did not look through anything or ask any questions. The guy in front of me was complaining quite vocally about how he already gets enough radiation from his MRI and does not want to go through the full body scanner. There was also something about communism and Hitler mixed in there too. Idiot, lol. Other than that, nothing happened.

There was a time before where I had to catch a flight after the underwear bomber incident. They did the full body pat-down and looked through everything, because they were suspicious of my calipers. They also asked a bunch of questions like; What do you use a caliper for? Why are you wearing a sweater? when it is only 5 degrees F below zero outside. LMFAO

Still, I do not care if they go searching through the bags. If I need to bring diapers and related props along such as pacifiers and adult toys, I am not going to check it in and pay the stupid fee. I always try to carry-on everything. That said, I have never had to bring those things along yet.

Since I travel regularly for work, and have seen and endured all the idiots you would wish would get on the next plane that is going to be blown up, there is basically two types of service / problems - and it is all in the way you treat these muppets.

The people operating the security systems don't care, don't want to know, and can really do nothing to change the current process. As a result, my best advice is

Keep your mouth shut, and do as they ask when they ask in the way they ask

It may seem like that you are submitting to some nanny state of hitlerism or whatever, but remember what I said earlier - these idiots are doing their job, and can really do nothing to change procedure. If you wish procedure to change, talk to your government.

If you chose to be anyway difficult, remember, these lads are on a power trip, and can make your life very very difficult indeed.

If they want to know about your diapers, they will ask.

There is a simple rule of thumb when dealing with idiots / muppets / civil servants / police / bank officials -

1- Don't volunteer information. - They won't believe you, and will delay you further as they escalate it to someone who will take the responsibility to ignore what you said.

2- Answer only what they ask. (see #1) The question(s) is/are part of a set group that a manager has wrote down for this muppet to ask you.

3- Do what they request you to do. - They don't have the intelligence to adapt to you way of doing things. They only know their way of doing things.

4- Keep your mouth shut and your opinions to yourself - If they sense that you have intelligence, it confuses them. In their opinion, you can't have intelligence since you are not a civil servant. see #1 also

Insanely, the list of people that fit into this idiots / muppets / civil servants / police / bank officials catagory is steadily growing. Hopefully, due to natural selection, or plain stupidity, these people will eventually die off, or is this just wishful thinking.

The last time I flew internationally, when I arrived in the US I had to go through security again to get to my connecting flight (in Chicago). I went through the full body scanner in an Attends Large with an Abena Abri-San X-Plus #11 pad inside it. After going through the scanner I was "flagged" for a body search due to the diaper (it wasn't wet). I was taken into a side room with two TSA agents and they swabbed down my bags and ran the swabs though scanners, I was patted down, and asked to undo my pants to see what I was wearing underneath my jeans. I complied all along, told them I was incontinent and wear diapers. I undid my pants, showed them my diaper and they were fine with everything.

I had no issue with everything they did, they were curteous and respectful.

Babykeiff - Your statements about civil servants, police officers, and the like are both ignorant and offensive. Why would you suggest you wished the hard working folks that clearly don't make enough money to do what they do, die?

That being said, the "front line" employees of airport security and TSA are simply following the rules established by the higher ups in their organizations. And of course that is an extremely long list of rules not granting employees the descretion to alter them as they wish. This may make them come across as strict because they are! It's not a power trip.

Be respectfull and honest and I can't imagine you would expreience any trouble or embarassment 99.99% of the time.

I was not trying to be disrespectful to the minority of people that make the effort on a daily basis to assist the people that they deal with. I, as well as most of the people who deal with the majority of the muppets who due to some uniform, seem to think that they have power, and allow it to go to their heads. Most problems can be addressed using common sense, but these muppets I am referring too would rather waste the time and stretch the patience of the people they deal with, for the fun of it!

As an example, I have seen fathers and mothers being refused entry to a school hall to witness their son / daughter graduate because the parent has the wrong colour on the sole of his/her feet. By the time the parent returns with the correct colour sole shoe, the security guard will not let them because it is the security guard's job to only allow people out.

Yes, there are people employed within civil service / security etc that enforce rules with no regard to the people that it effects, and get some perverse sense of pleasure when they upset a member of the public by causing that person to miss something - a flight etc.

Jinxed, the next time you are delayed by a security check long enough to miss a flight, that causes you to spend the next 48 hours sleeping in an airport, please then come back here and tell me how good the security was? - or if you miss attending an event due to some new rule that is being enforced that you didn't find out about until you appeared, on time to the event. How do you explain to a child why you weren't at his/her recital / etc?

I am going to use the Wounded Warrior Security Program if i have to fly because i carry my medications and and c-pap equipment along with my carry on.

I will not check my meds or c-pap period and its exempt from the one carry on rule.

With me using this program i don't think they will worry about the diaper.

I fly with regularity, and I have never had a problem with anyone in airport security when traveling for work. I know what things will make them call me aside and I am smart enough to refrain from those whenever possible. Example: I have an aluminum briefcase that contains a very exotic looking piece of prototype electronics. There are times when I need to take it with me, and when I do, I know I will be pulled aside and given extra attention. No big deal, I just arrive 20 minutes earlier than I would normally.

Aside from that, I always fly with only carry-on. Clothes, diapers, laptop, Kindle. They see it all, and could care less. Often I have to go through in a wheelchair and/or crutches and they are quite respectful. No explanations are ever needed, or given. I fly throughout North America and Europe, and the only problem I ever had came when my 4 year old son brought his backpack full of "Thomas the Tank Engine" toys. These toys all have magnets, which screw with the xray machines. This phenomenon was not well know to the TSA agents at that time and they gave my son a thorough pat down and wand treatment. Now it is explained to the xray techs and search staff since there are so many magnets in Apple products and high end purses.

Uhmmm... what the heck is "exotic looking electronics?" Mind wanders... :roflmao:

I'm no computer or electronics expert, so I'll buy that Apple products have magnets. Not saying I don't believe you, but please verify, document, and list collaborating sources on why there are magnets in "high end purses."

Well, most computers have hard drives that are completely made out of magnets and many of the purses I have seen use a magnet to keep the top of the purse closed. Still, I do not know why it would matter if there was a magnet present. It would be interesting to learn more details about the issue.

Moving on to what Babykeiff said. The thing he does not realize is the high turnover rate and low pay associated with these jobs. Not only are these TSA workers being paid very low wages, they also have to work in a stressful environment with very little breaks. Thus, TSA is constantly training new employees to replace older employees that leave, because there is no reward for being a good TSA worker. The compensation is no where near decent enough for the job. Therefore, they always have inexperienced workers who don't care about their performance. Plus, they must follow rules and regulations to the letter. If they do not, it does not matter why, they will be fired.

My point is, the system is the bigger problem here. Being a TSA screener is one of the worst jobs out there.

Diapered Jason,

I do wholly agree with you, and understand, to some extent, the processes involved in the US dealing with the huge volumes of people. Accordingly, I do understand the need for rules and how also the need to follow processes so rigidly. That is why I placed in my previous post http://www.dailydiapers.com/board/index.php?showtopic=30142&view=findpost&p=441269 how to deal with these type of people, but it seems to upset Jinxed as well as other members. It could be that my comments are a little too personal.

I do not take it as a personal insult when an official asks me to do a certain thing or behave in a certain way, as all that does is delay me, cause my stress levels to rise = unnecessary harm to me. There are usually better and less stressful ways of dealing with this type of problem.

iPads have magnets in them to hold on mag-latched case covers. MacBooks have magnets for the power connector. Many purses have magnetic latches, as do many purse wallets. Eel skin wallets are prone to erasing credit cards because of the magnetic latch commonly used on them.

So what do magnets have to do with messing up x-rays? Easy- they bend and distort the path of the radiation as it passes through the viewed items. You can cause the same type of distortion by placing a strong magnet on the top of your old fashioned CRT monitor.

But, you're talking about an electron beam. That medium is completely different from X-rays. Of course, I know magnetic fields are used to alter the path of electron beams, but are you sure it is the same with X-rays?

You're right. My bad I was confusing the two as they are often coincident. I do know that the image of my son's backpack looked very distorted at the point of each magnetic coupler between all his train pieces. The TSA folks let me see it. :)

I think the important question is being missed here:

Keiff: Why are you using "Muppet" as a pejorative? Muppets are AWESOME! :o

Leilin,

may I grovel for forgiveness. Jim Henson's characters/children are NOT civil servants.
