Help Needed From All You Diaper Lovers

As some of you will know, DailyDi and myself have been working on a new "products database" for DailyDiapers. The end goal is for a system which can replace the current reviews site, but at the same time give us something a little better. I've attached some screen-shots below, which are taken from our current test system. Hopefully you can all get the "feel" of what we're aiming for from those.

Anyway, we're coming to a point where many of the key features are working and so begins the process of seeding the system with information. Now is where I need your help.

We need volunteers to help us with 4 tasks:

1. Getting information for the products lines we don't yet have loaded (esp. for the non-disposable-diaper products).

2. Taking 'standard' sets of pictures for products and packaging you have access to (you don't need to model the products if you don't want!)

3. Providing good quality reviews (these can be ones YOU have written before).

4. Identifying suppliers/retailers for products (i.e. URLs for their websites, the product lines they stock, the country they are in) etc.

Please reply here if you are able and willing to help. This is a great chance for people to help create a resource for the whole community, so please consider donating some of your time.

I'll co-ordinate things with any volunteers later via private messages, but if anyone is interested in looking at point 1 from above, the product lines I've loaded into the system so far are provided below. I know some big ones are missing (Tranquillity ATN's, WellnessBriefs, Assure etc.) so hopefully you can see that we really do need your help!

i like the place where people rate certain aspects, the only thing i would suggest is perhaps... making it so each user can only 'vote' 1 time.... they can change their vote, but it only qualifies one time..

i know in hte past there have been instances where owners or operators of certain websites have created a name and then sought to boost their own reputation or hurt another companies through multiple posts.... by making it so each person can only review once... but can change their review..... you know so it only counts once... not as like 15 good reviews... could keep it from people continuously voting....

I'm not sure if I'll be able to help Zander, but I'm going to PM you a couple of suggestions. I like where the new review system appears to be heading. One thing I would suggest right away is separating the Huggies Pull-Ups into "Learning Designs" and "Cool Alert" varieties to go with the "Night Time" variety. (The same is true of other diapers with similar variations.)

I have to respectfully disagree with Sarah's idea of "one review per product per person," and I'll explain why. Some products (e.g. GoodNites and UnderJams) are updated very frequently, and people such as myself frequently go back and review the new product. The "old" review may still be useful though, particularly to those looking for an older variation of a specific diaper, or even just an older print on them. Perhaps a "year" filter, or a "vintage" filter would be helpful though. For example, my review of the 2009 GoodNites would be considered "vintage," while my review of the 2010 GoodNites (which are still current as of this writing,) would be considered "current" until the product is updated.

I would also consider making the ratings "required fields" if you will. The person who writes "this is an awesome diaper," and doesn't even fill out the ratings fields has not only written a rather unhelpful review, but they've failed to fill out the rating information that would make their review at least somewhat helpful. Furthermore, I would suggest requiring that product photos meet a certain minimum resolution, and that all photos ultimately be scaled to that resolution. Other websites do this frequently to ensure consistent quality among images, and I see no reason why DD shouldn't do it as well. (Obviously exceptions could be made for really rare vintage material.)

Thanks very much for the PM Dirty Diaper/Maxipad Lover, that fact we're missing some big names like GoodNights is the whole reason for this thread, its great to see someone take the initiative.

In terms of how we have modelled the database, the idea is fairly simple: a manufacturer creates one or more brands, each brand has one or more product lines, each product line has one or more variants. There may be some playing about to get things into this structure (e.g. we might have multiple product lines such as "Pull-Ups (Learning)" and "Pull-Ups (Cool Alert)" where strictly you could argue they are variants, but we'll deal with those as they come up.

I know we're never going to get them all and we will have some holes in the information we get, but at the moment these appear on my radar as brands/manufacturers we have nothing loaded for at the moment (yes, its a big list!) that I'm looking for help with:

The new products database site uses your forum account to mange contributions - like the MegaPics system - so each user account on the forum can rate once per product line (although they can submit multiple reviews, pics etc.). Its worth noting that reviews, ratings , pics etc. also must be approved explicitly by a moderator to get shown: they are not automatically accepted like the "post ratings" thing we have on forum posts or the picture rating system we have on the forum gallery. Finally, we have made a qualitative distinction between what constitutes a review vs. a rating - the following text is the (current) default in the "Submit a new review" form:

My $0.02-

I'm glad to send in reviews on what I have experience with and encourage others to do likewise However I'd like to see some minor issues addressed.

1- In the old section several reviews didn't say a thing about capacity. While I know that not everyone is into wetting, that is a very important aspect of a diaper so I'd make that a required field for at least the opening review

2- Diaper styles change and some brands are different in Europe and Australia, so lets make a way to be sure that we're all talking about the same diaper

3- The biggie: When a style is changed to something different than before, as soon as a new review is made the old reviews need to disappear since those diapers are gone It's frustrating to read along about a great plastic backed diaper only to find that that same diaper is now cloth-like covered and thinner

4- I think we'd do well to Admin review all reviews before posting them to cull out the few who are bit being realistic or are just bashing a diaper they don't like The reviews should be seen as a lexicon of real experiences- pro or con- and it's easier to pre-check posts then to read them and delete the bad ones after they are posted. If you and DD wish to do that, I'm willing to help

5- Organizing categories can be hard if you get too specific. I'd go for the basic distinctions such as 'Pull-up" or "Tape-on"; Plastic or Cloth, and perhaps the number of tapes. I'd sort the default table of contents by maker and style, then have other sorting options from a drop-down menu or buttons. If you sort by 'daytime' and 'nighttime' or by capacity there will always be some who disagree with your assessment, and there's no need to create dissension (unless you will handle it all by yourself- I want no part of unneeded conflict; life gives me enough of that already!)

6- Photo categories should be of a diaper as packed; unfolded and unworn so we can see the padding; and if pics of them being worn are wanted they should be tasteful ones that show front, back, and side. If the poster can take a close-up crotch-shot they can do the rest! And these pics need to be large enough to show the lower body shape, not just the crotch.

I guess that's all the gripes I had about the old reviews, and I want to say a Great Big Thank You for you taking on such a big job for the rotten wages we get paid for working on this site

The overnight youth diapers that Kimberly-Clark manufacturers are named "GoodNites," (note the spelling and the capital "N" in the middle of the word.) Likewise, the product that Proctor & Gamble manufactures and sells under the Pampers brand is known as "UnderJams Night Wear." (Again, note the funky capitalization.)

If we can identify who submitted the reviews already on the existing site (and they are of decent quality) we'll batch migrate them across to the new system and assign them to the correct owner. Of course, we'll certainly keep the old site data backed up. Its DailyDi's choice as to how we manage a transition, but we'll work something sensible out. That said, I'd hazard an estimate that only one in 20 or so reviews on the site are worth keeping the same goes for say, 1 in 10 of the pics. The quality is really, really bad and for some I'm pretty sure the copyright is dubious at best.

If the existing stuff was better I'd have written better tooling to harvest and catalog it, as it stands I've only created a tool to backup all the images, categorised them by product and mark if they contain flesh tones in more than 8% of the image.

Currently we'd load that as a separate product line (named accordingly) and possibly rename the previous line with the date range involved (e.g. when the new version of the Cuddlz one comes out, we can change the current line from "Cuddlz White Adult Nappy" to "Cuddlz White Adult Nappy (2007-2011)" and load the new one as "Cuddlz White Adult Nappy (2011 onwards)" or similar). We might also want to have non-current lines greyed out - the data model is robust enough to handle that.

Thank goodness somebody is doing this!!! I've been requesting it for a while that it get cleaned up and edited as there are sooooo many duplicates and errors.

My 2 cents(sorry if these have already been discussed or thought of):

1. Possibly add a way so that "new" to the market diapers have green text (or whatever color) and discontinued products have a say red color.

2. Also may want to add a line as to where they are available, like USA, www..com or store names. Or UK, www..com, etc. That way there are quick links to websites to purchase the products from and also that way I can know if I live in the US, I can, or cannot get these products.

3. May want to add what sizes these products are available in too.

4. This ones a biggy!! May want to do a format like the program "Microsoft Access". Not sure if you've worked with it but it allows you to put in multiple lines, in different categories you designate and that way you can filter them. So, basicially, however you want to do it, have tabs at the top that will say sort by, All, Brand, ABC, Disposable, Brief, Underwear, Pads, Youth(like baby and pull-up diapers), Available Size, Print, Color, Cloth outer cover, plastic outer cover, plastic pants, cloth diapers, etc.

It'd just be great to almost be able to weed down the selections so if I'm a person wondering what type of "Large, Any Brand, Disposable Brief, Plastic outer cover, white, I can choose from, I'd be able to go to it. It'd kinda be like www.carsoup.com tabs on the side and you can filter everything out.

Just thinking since it's all be worked on right now, might be easier to do it now then do it again later, so what do ya think?

Thanks, we've already gotten most of the code done for version 1 (and the test site is up and running). Of course we will be extending the site as time goes on, but for now its really important we get the first version ready and out the door for everyone to use. We can add more features/filters etc. later, but what we really need at the moment is good quality content! That means some good PICTURES and REVIEWS.

Both of these are very easy for most of our members to contribute, but at the moment it's really frustrating. The community keeps saying this is a great idea but only three people (other than myself) have actually bothered to send anything in or help out (for the record: 'Christine Daryleanne', 'kept in nappies' and 'Dirty Diaper/Maxipad Lover' - you all have my thanks for your efforts and ongoing support.)

If you have some diapers, nappies, plastic-pants etc. etc. please help out!
