.xxx Domains For Adult Sites?

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if anyone has followed this proposal. It originally came up several years ago and has hit snags on a regular basis. There's an article about it on MSNBC right now at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10284361/ .

Personally I think it is a good idea to have a .xxx extension, but not to force adult sites to go into it. I think sites that wanted to be labeled adult would flock to it, but at the same time, there's a lot of sites with content that sits on the fence between being porno and not, whose owners and viewers might not think it belongs there...

So, what do others think? Should there be a .xxx domain for adult sites? If there is, should adult sites be forced to change from .com or .net to that, or should it be optional? And perhaps here's a bigger question, do you think a site like this, DailyDiapers should be moved to a .xxx site if that extension is approved?

I am against the idea of .xxx domains as I fear it would make it to easy for ISP's to censor what their members can see by simply blocking any site on a .xxx domain. Also, forcing all adult sites into one TLD will create a bidding war when owners of say sex.com sex.net and sex.org have to fight to get the one sex.xxx domain.

I like the idea of having the .xxx extension. I think we need to protect our children first (no, I don't have any), and it would make these sites easier to block. Children should be this country's #1 focus.

I do not feel current sites should be forced to take the .xxx extension. New sites should. Maybe have the current sites change over after a period of time. The .coms should be given first choice to take the .xxx entension, and if they pass, bidding war!

When there are sites like www.whitehouse.com not being a site for the actual Whitehouse, I think we should do something.

I really dont see the point in creating a new domain for adult sites, the problem isnt the sites its the parents.

If parents are willing to let their children go on the internet unsupervised then its their own fault and not the adult websites.

Even if all the adult websites did move to xxx, there will still be the fake search sites when you search for cookies and you get some page that sounds good but has explicit nudity.

sites like this would be impossible to stop - how many free website providers are there? how many check sites before making them 'live'. and whats more the USA doesnt rule the internet, no-one does - it'll be just like that proof of age law for US sites, that only applies to US sites, or watersport / scat etc.... isnt illegall in every country.

At some level, I have to say I think it would be nice to find my porn more easily. [random URL].xxx and porn here we come!

Maybe it is the compture science background that likes the idea of a heirarchy like that. We have .gov for official government sites. We have .edu for education sites. What's wrong with having more extensions based on intended content of the given site?

I hardly thing it would solve everything, in fact it might not solve an awful lot, but it would be a tool to use. Having a vaccine doesn't prevent a disease without a doctor to use a syringe to deliver it... but if the doctor doesn't have a syringe, fat lot of good the vaccine does. (Well, unless it can be administered orally or as a suppository...)

It isn't a law, it is a decision by a non-governent group, that the US government is believed to have great control over. There's a couple different views on this:

1) force "adult" sites to move -- which depends on how you decide what is "adult" this changes country to country and state to state.

2) allow "adult" sites to move if they wish, but provide the .xxx extension

3) don't do any of it...

Personally I don't think that people under 18 are harmed by seeing images of adults having sex -- but they may well be affected by images of violent sex, or etc.

And, yes, I think kids would go to sites in a different language -- believe it or not, there's a lot of intelligent kids out there, ones who speak 2 or more languages... not as many in the US as in Europe... but still, they are out there.

doo-doo doo-doo! dun-dunh!

And then there's guys like me, who can figure out which fields in any site mean "email," "username," "confirm email/username" and "password" in just about any language on the globe. I frequent ABKingdom, but I still haven't, and likely never will, learn Klingon.
