American cheese is an insult to cheese.

Well that's your opinion but if you ate what the OP is describing it wasn't even American cheese in the sense. Real American cheese ,think Kraft brand is a processed cheese to be sure, but not processed from majorly abudance of vegetable oil or some other nasty stuff, which is what the cheap stuff is made from, taste like plastic.. While I like quite a variety of cheeses, American has it's place. A burger off a charcoal grill just isn't complete without two slices of Kraft cheese. It's like a bit of cheddar taste with a smoothness of butter. NUMMY!

What the OP got wasn't real "Cheese", but a "Cheese product". It has to be labelled that way in the US but the words are usually small. I don't know the specs but "cheese product' slices can vary from barely acceptable to something that looks like cheese but is as flavorful (and sometimes as tough) as cardboard <_< Read the label and don't get burned. Some stores will have a store-brand 'premium' American Cheese at a lower price than national brands and In my experience these are always good. I don't buy anything less- better to go hungry than be that badly disappointed ;)

I DESPISE American 'cheese'! :badmood: of you read the label on any of them, at the bottom it literally says "processed cheese food" IT'S N*O*T cheese! not on a burger or anything else! Y*U*C*K. The only sliced cheese I get, at the VERY least is Tillimuk slices. It's a mild chedder, and 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000% better then anything remotly called "American cheese" :glare:

I love cheese and will eat 'almost' any type...( I have yet to be brave enough to try Limburger though) *shudder*

and I'm most fond of Chedders as they are very flavorful, but a good edam or Ghouda or other import wax covered cheese is worth a try..OI would L*O*V*E to go to a real cheese shop and experiance everything they had there  I mean how awesome would that me??

I have been to numerous delis and other markets and they are all fascinating and have amazing things to try....gotta do that again someday..

But NOT with anything having to do with *gag* :American type 'cheese'

It's kind of like that 'cheese' slop they call 'sauce' that they put on your Nachos...*gag* *gag* *gag* UGH!

Just no...it's all wrong!

I'll take my Tillamuk any day and enjoy myself :P

I agree. That oiled and salty corn syrup which kraft processes into a "cheese product" is horrible.

The only cheese I buy comes from the deli department and needs to be sliced/shredded on the spot.

I've just managed to realize that buying processed, oily, salted, corn syrup, etc type food, isn't food you can eat if you want to stay health, maintain a decent weight, and live long enough to retire. It is quite literally poison towards your health. If it costs me more to not eat poison then so be it.

Eek! sorry! I was trying to make a joke about how it's so common for companies to put additives into their product that it's become the "new American way." But I guess I came off looking dumb and supportive of American "cheese" and how it gets made.

Actually I have to agree with you to a point. It does seem to be the way American corporations run these days. Most just want to make the cheapest product possible for the biggest return on profits possible. The don't seem very concerned with actually producing anything of actual quality any more. It's capitalism at its best, but quite sad really.

I'm not too fond of Kraft American cheese singles, but they're better than most of the off brands. My favorite for a long time, which I haven't been able to get in years, was the Kirkland American cheese slices they sold for deli services. I could eat slices of that cheese all by itself, it was great.

A good mild or medium Cheddar, Pepperjack, or Baby Swiss can be awesome by itself  But melted American or Poblano is just as good in the right place. And what is spaghetti without Parmesean? :P I'm not a fan of strong Cheeses or strong Peppers, I prefer to relish the flavor, not be overwhelmed by it! There's little you can do to a cheese to improve it but there's a lot you can do to ruin it; overprocessing and unneeded additives do just that <_< As I don't like milk anymore, most of my dairy food quota comes from Cheese these days. I don't seem to need a lot but it would be a much blander world without it :( Kind of like with wines, the right variety of cheese can take a meal from great to perfection all by itself B)
