"Share" Buttons on Picture Pages in Gallery

Recommended Posts

Rachel Emily called my attention to some buttons on the large image pages in the Gallery. Thse are apparently "Share" bottons for things like Facebook, Google, etc. I looked at my gallery and found them. I thin looked on someone else's gallery and found them also.

Does this mean that a viewer can share your pictures on these networks withoug the owner's permission. How do I disable them?

I do not put my pictures here to have them shipped to other networks where I do not have an LG account like Facebook or Google

There is a difference between having them on Google Images and having them put on a network where I have a non-ABLG account and having someone actively do that

It is a question of can the image be traced back to, in this case, me via IP Address or the like on that network more than just the image itself. I have seen some of my handiwork on Google Images

unfortunately this is the Internet. like stated above, any pic posted anywhere can be Screen captured or Saved to a computer from the site (Right clicking and "Save As". I took I BIG Risk posting a couple AB pics of myself on here. that is the risk I will live with. Heck, you can ever Download videos off of Youtube to your computer.

To repeat: That is different than having them shipped off to a specific network that I may have a non-ABLG account on, which is why I did not join DD on Facebook, and traceable to me. Do people have trouble understanding the difference between ordinary access and specific access? These "Share" buttons are ACTIVELY to SPECIFIC destinations. I am sensible enough to not use non-recognizable pictures, but I am concerned that certain meta-data from a shared image can lead back to me and trigger a link to an account from which I wish to isolate them. A screen cap is no problem becasue the image will have the address of the person who did the screen cap but a direct Share to a specific network may also ship the meta-data that id unique to me

I have no problem having that option myself with my own images, but that option should be mine, or the person whose image it is, One word: troll

I think a mod or admin better look at this and comment

As we have both said, on the internet, there is no difference between where you post. It is the internet. One big ball of information. the fantasy that you can separate one site from another is just that, fantasy.

As an example, i play a popular online MMO. one of the recruiters for a group did a background check on me, and found not only my fetlife but my DD and my facebook, as well as my Forum account For Xbox. And tied them all in a neat bow. and he was an amateur. All of this information was tied together by links i have visited. and no, he did not "Hack" me or the servers, all of this information can be easily seen by exploiting simple bot dumps.

Removeing the Sharebuttons will do absolutly nothing. ME sharing a picture on MY Facebook (That is all the buttons do) expose me, and give people no more information than you do by actually posting them.

For those interested: If you take proper precautions and not put anything recognizable in the picture then the only thing of concern is meta-data. What I did was download one of my images and used IrfanView to convert it from a jpg to a bmp then convert the bmp back to a jpg under a different name. IV lets you strip out much of the meta-data and the DD gallery renames it anyway. What is not there, then the snoop-bots on networks cannot read it and trace it back

Another good reason to get IrfanView

If the Gallery will upload filetypes other than jpg. IrfanView will convert your image to other filetypes that keep as much of the image quality as jpgs. Even gif's are just about indistinguishable visually from jpgs. and png's are supposed to be lossless or nearly so

I did not see anything that looked like an address of origin

Bottom line: If you are paranoid or in a sensitive position, from all I can see, things are fine if you get IrfanView (the link is on my profile page) and do as I did
