Baby Brian
I think this is a perfect article to show how discriminatory against age some people can be. Our constitution specifically guarantees our right from age discrimination, yet it is so prelevent that even our enforcement of laws often infringes on it. So long as the picture is in no way pornographic then it simply shouldn't matter how old a child is when you have a photo if them, even if They are only wearing a diaper. Link to comment
Elfy
The ultimate reality is we can have laws against discriminating for various reasons, but at the end of the day people will always discriminate, not even for obvious reasons... Have you ever looked at someone and just thought "I don't like the look of him/her" or "that guy/girl over there is hot"? Right there you are discriminating (negatively and positively respectively) Link to comment
jeremy12312
Reading the comments on that article was fairly enlightening (not something that's usually said about comment sections, so bravo, NPR), but someone brought up the point that the outrage for the dignity of the 16-year old was probably more misdirected discomfort from the complainers that they were so visibly reminded that such disabilities and special needs exist in the world. Out of sight, out of mind seems to be what keeps so many people going in this world. 2 Link to comment
square_duck
^ this as well, and bravo to NPR for publishing stuff like this and standing behind it Jeremy is correct, anyone who had negative comments about this photo was simply misplacing their own discomfort regarding the photo, as they more then likely didn't want to have to think about what they would do in same situation. The pic is great and shows what people with disabled children have to do EVERYDAY of their lives. I know a couple of caregivers who work with severely disabled patients. It takes patience, courage, strength (physical, emotional and spiritual) because this is NOT an easy job. Day in and day out...and have to live your own life and take care of yourself....This is in no way an easy thing, and yet people have the nerve to criticize.... I think someone said a long time ago.. "walk a mile in another mans shoes......" I am sure that photo scared the hell out of a lot of shallow people Link to comment
AwakenEvil
I think after reading the article I think the picture was supposed to let you see how this guy and his sons daily life is. Its not one where someone was like lets take your diapered son and have a picture of him sitting in his own piss and shit for our readers but it was to show his struggles and daily life. 1 Link to comment
Crinklebritches
Cudos to NPR. I think it shows incontinence is not age discriminating, but people are. I also agree Jeremy and Duck. Link to comment
kevindhca
The photo is a very good illustration of dealing with the challenges that life brings you. Most people have no idea what it would be like to carry your 16 year old child to the bath. The family obviously didn't ask to be in this situation, they're just dealing with it the best they can. Probably with way too little support. The really big problem is in the future. Their are virtually no facilities to care for disabled young people. Currently, most disabled people that can no longer be cared for by their families, are placed in senior care facilities. It's a shame, as our society will be judged by how we treat the most vulnerable persons. Link to comment
