Why was I spared? Why was I so fortunate?

Thank you for stating this very traumatic experience and it just reminds us of the fragility of life and randomness of events. I hope you are feeling better and that you can carry on. I treasure life and all it brings, but know it is not forever.

I remember coming home from Missoula once with my family and my little brother had to go to the bathroom. I was icy and snowy out and we were behind a big truck that carried fuel. We stop at the gas station outside of Missoula and then we leave and then up ahead halfway between Arlee and Missoula was an accident and several car crashes and that large truck that went off the road. That could have been us in the crash and there would have gone my car we took. My god we were lucky all because my brother had to take a wee.

Life is a random series of events that can't be simply explained with the word why. Hugs Carly. All things happen for some unknown reason or force. You have to simply accept them and understand that this world there are many elements way beyond are control. Those things you shouldn't ever fret over in the slightest because nothing you or I can do will ever change the out come. What you need to focus on is the peices you do control and manipulate them to the absolute best advantages for you and your future.

I've had my close calls too, though none where the next one along 'bought the farm'. I've had 3 close lightning strikes where I felt the electricity as the flash and coinciding 'boom' of thunder took a moment for my mind to process :o Lightning struck the power line leading into of my house once when I was away, destroying everything plugged in on that side of the house. I saw where it jumped to the tree next to the house and burned a streak to the ground when I got home and started investigating. Had than tree not taken the hit my house would have been burned to the ground. I've had high-level weather training from the NWS regarding dangerous weather events and the rule is that if you can hear the thunder, you are within range of the lightning. A local man was struck mowing his lawn under clear skies in the 1971 when a storm cell 15 miles away generated just two bolts of lightning before dissapating; one of those two got him :(

My condolences to the family and friends.

Unfortunately she made the wrong choice.

Thinking ahead and planning what you might do in certain situations may save your life.

You are here to share this story because you made the right choice, run to a building for shelter.

Getting a little wet is not going to kill you. Moving to a risky spot can.

You have every right to feel the way you do Carly. It will take time to work through all of the feelings and emotions with a tragedy like this. Be kind to your self and like creepymouse said honour that person by living a good life.

There's really no way of explaining it. It's traumatic and terrible to witness the death of another human being, and the depths to which it has shaken you says a lot about you as a person. You're a good person. Just let your brain process it - it will take a while.

Quoting Kenny Rogers: "The best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep" ;) Yes, this is tragic. Yes, it's traumatic. Yes, it does make one think of their own frail connection to life. But in the end we all die and there's no escaping that so my choice is to embrace death as an integral part of life :) Life is for the living; death is for Morticians to make a living from :P Mourn the dead, embrace whatever good they did while they were here, then go live for yourself while you still can for your own time is too limited to waste much of it on the dead B)

There have been cases where lightening has struck people in garages, homes and yes definitely under trees. We never know why life deals us the hands it does, we just know that we must learn to play the hands we're delt from life.

I'm not religious myself but I get some comfort in reading some of the posts about god wanting you early.

I've had a close call with lightning once when I've had mine and my partners hair standing on end. A quick escape to shelter and we where just lucky.

You don't know what fair awaits you and I agree with most other posters that you have to live with the hand your delt whilst not pushing the risks up too much with things that are in your control.

I'm sorry that you had to witness one of mother natures most powerful punches. But you too will learn from the event and I doubt you'll never get under a tree in a storm and perhaps learn to read the clouds as best you can. I always look at the cloud formations as over the years I've been very close to lightning strikes.

My condolences to friends and the family of this poor young girl.

I had a massive story of a time i escaped having my throat slit because of a spin the bottle game landing on the guy beside me VS half an inch more spin. But then i had a thought.

Lightning rods don't work as good as you might think. I'm in the electrical design industry and have learned you can try and give them a safe path to strike, but it's by no means reliable.
