Bettypooh Posted December 16, 2012 Posted December 16, 2012 Not site-related, but I need some tech help The basics: I'm running XP and have a .jpeg image saved from MSPaint which I want to enlarge and use as my avatar here. Shrinking it is easy- someone suggested a free thumbnail program that's good at that, but it doesn't enlarge thumbnails I don't have any advanced programs here and my Adobe is read-only. I could sure use some help here but I may need step-by step instructions and your patience since I'm not technically inclined Bettypooh
Little BabyDoll Christine Posted December 16, 2012 Posted December 16, 2012 1 Google up IrfanView 2, Downlaod itand the full set of plug-ins setups 3 Run them 4 When finished run IrfanView 5 Go to File >Open and find the folder and jpg 6 Go to Image>Resize/Rexample 7 on the dialog box check Resample and Add Sharpness There is a limit to the factor that you can rezie to before the image starts to break up IrfanView is the best free resizing program I've found. This may take several trials so save each under a different name so that you have the original to wrok with if you need to do several tries
Bettypooh Posted December 16, 2012 Author Posted December 16, 2012 YIPPEE! Thank You Christine Bettypooh
Little BabyDoll Christine Posted December 16, 2012 Posted December 16, 2012 You are welcom It did not take you long You might also waht to explore some of the other functions for photo editing and effect, try the effect browser It also has it's own Paint module. that is my image editor of choice. A sort of poor girl's Photoshop. I have salvaged some pretty ugly photos with it All ove my Gallery photos have been edited with it
wetman Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Hi Betty! Christine is right, Irfanview is one of the best freewares ever! Reads about every format you can think of (and a multitude of ones that you never heard about) and saves to just as many, very compact and easy to use. I specially like the "batch processing" function, where you can set values (resolution, size, aspect ratio, filename and more) for the resulting pictures and just throw hundreds of pix at it and it'll work through them. Ideal for building slideshows! If you ever need to do more than IV offers, there's "The GIMP". Also free to use and comparable to Photoshop, but maybe a bit of overkill for resizing... By the way, cute avatar pic!
Little BabyDoll Christine Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 I tried to use The Gimp but the tooltip boxes that explain things had no text. Also IV can be used creatively for things like turning bright color lines on a black background into psychedelic moire patterns. WARNINGS: IRFAVIEW SUPPORTS ONLY 1 LEVEL OF UNDO/REDO and UNTIL YOU GO INTO PROPERTIES AND INSTRUCT IT TO OFFER TO SAVE AUTOMATICALLY THE IMAGE IS NOT SAVED AND LOST ON EXIT UNLESS YOU ACTIVELY SAVE IT USING File>Save (there are 3 save options Here is a trick I used to create satin backgrounds 1. Take a piece of matealic or iridescent material and load it in IV 2. Go to Image>Effect>Effects Broswer>Metallic Gold>OK To get more highlights, you may need to do it twice 3. Go to Image>Resize/Resample and set the size such as 800 x 600 4. Go to Image>Dcrease color scale>2 colors (b/w) 5. Save the result of all of this as a gif with no transparency Now when you want to create a background call this image up 1. Go to Image>Color correct. You will be looking at the following control sliders plus before and after images a Brightness e Contrast b Red f Gamma correction c Green g Saturation (color) d Blue These controls are at the center position left movement subtracts and right movement augments the effect 2, Adjust them to your liking the contrast is greater between the highlight and shadows for foil backgrounds than for satin 3. If you do not like the way the operation is goin use just cancel or save and use Image>Auto adjust color and start all over again 4. You may have to do this several times to get the colors of highlight and shadow you like 5. When you have the image to your liking save UNDER A DIFFERENT FILENAME or it will overwrite and therefor change the image you are working from and you will have lost it These can be used for page backgrounds, desktop backgrounds or convert the one you want to a .bmp and overlay another bmp image on it using Edit>overaly function, in which case the background acts like a frame. To see what that looks like use the image link in my sig and look at the aniGif in the lower left Here is a larger aniGif (made with unFREEZ) used as a slideshow using a satin background and music. It may cause there to be many wet diapers http://sandralyn.net/4lg.html I have made a bundke of these and put them At RUFFLES & RIBBONS GIRLS' HOME and you can tdownload them. I have made quite a number of them, over 45, and it may be a large zip, 14 MB http://other.sandral...et/satin_bg.zip You can use color control to tint b/w images like photos that you make b/w by using Image>Decrease color scale>2 color or using the Negative on the b/w images you can create an antique gold "plate" (the term for an image on metal media) images. You can also do this with images run through Greyscale Using Image>Effects>Effects Browser> Emboss (To engrave, you just move the control slider into the negative numbers) you can create an engraved or embossed plate and color it with Color Correct. This is just scrumptious for "plaque"s. There are fonts and you can add more of them IrfanView works with Fliters Unlimited. I recommend going to Filters Unlimited and buying the set at $US40. You get about 350, IIRC and apparently the ability to get or make more of them Here is my signature image engraved in gold then aged a century
Kari Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Hi Bettypooh, I know this is kinda late, but anything to talk to you LOL Anyway another good simple photo editor program besides Irfanview is FastStone Image Viewer. It may be a little more limited, but I like it that way for simple things such as cropping and resizing. I have multiple photo editor programs on my 'puter depending on what I need or want to do. Hope that helps. Regards, Kari
