Raising Our Girls

Diana pulled the sherperd's pie out of the oven and put in a tray of biscuits, then got the table set and drinks poured while the biscuits baked. "Penny! Go wash your hands and come to the table! Dinner is almost ready!" she called.

John gave Penny a pat on the bottom and sent her on her way. He lifted Mary up and set her in her chair at the table. The chair matched the others with the same wood finish, but Mary's had more support and a buckle so she could sit and eat without getting sore and without falling out of her chair. He changed her drool covered bib and got the silverware out, including Mary's adaptive ones.

Penny did as she was told and took her seat. She loved shepherd's pie and was so happy her mother had made it, as she'd been begging for it for weeks.

Diana served everyone and took her seat next to Mary so she could help her when necessary.

Mary smiled and used her spoon to carefully give herself bites of food, chewing carefully as not to choke which she often did. She had already choked at lunch earlier when she stopped breathing for a moment and food got stuck in her throat.

Diana kept a close eye on Mary as she ate, hoping to avoid another choking episode.

Mary finished her dinner and put her spoon down to signify she was finished.

Diana wiped Mary's face and hands and cleared the table. "Okay, how about we go do your bath," she said to Mary, knowing John would handle the dishes as he usually did. "Then you and your sister can watch a movie before bed."

"Mama poo!" Mary announced as Diana starred to remove her from her chair. She had started to get good about knowing when she had to use the toilet for a bowel movement, but still had no idea if she had to pee or not.

Diana quickly carried Mary to the bathroom and sat her on the toilet.

Mary gripped onto the front area of her toilet seat, using it for stability as she emptied her bowels into the toilet. "Done!" She said once she had finished.

"Good girl!" Diana praised as she wiped Mary and got her panties and pants back on. "I'm so proud of you for using the potty!"

Penny dried the plates and carefully stacked them on the counter. "I know, but can't she do something fun with mommy instead, an' just me an' you can go skating?"

Mary smiled and let her mother dress her, unable to do it herself. She let herself be carried upstairs and waited patiently while Diana ran the water and put Mary's shower

Diana suppressed a groan as she carried the six-year-old upstairs. It was taking a toll on her back and she desperately wished they had the funds to put a handicap accessible bathroom downstairs but, given the structure of their old house it would be a very costly undertaking. She knew it was only a matter of time before she could no longer carry Mary up and down the stairs multiple times a day, or bathe her safely in their upstairs tub, which was not handicap accessible.

Mary gave her mother a small smile when she started to wash her. She was always well behaved, except when she got overly frustrated, usually from the lack of abilities she had. She let her mother wash her, even lifting her arms as best she could.

Penny peeked out around the chair she was hiding behind and sniffled. "Really? You promise?" She was usually good about doing things with Mary and not complaining about the fun things she missed out of because her sister couldn't do them, but she was only four and sometimes it was hard to keep her emotions in check.

"There! All squeaky clean!" Diana chirped as she wrapped Mary in a fluffy towel. She carried the girl to her soon and laid her on the changing table where she diapered her for bed, got her into her pajamas, and brushed her hair. "Okay, what movie do you want to watch?" she asked as she picked Mary back up to bring her downstairs.

"I can't promise yet. But I'll see what I can do. I promise I'll try." John said picking his baby up. "I know it's hard sometimes. And we appreciate you being such a big girl."

Penny nodded and snuggled into her father's chest as she wiped her nose on her sleeve. "Okay. Can...Can I pick the movie tonight?"

"Pocahontas? Oh, that's a good one! We haven't watched that in a long time."

John bit his lip. He knew it was supposed to be Mary's turn, but didn't want Penny

Got the names mixed up

"Mary already picked. She wants to watch Pocahontas," Diana said as she got Mary settled on the couch. "Penny, you picked the last time we had a movie night."

"You'll get to pick next time Penny." John said, sitting on the loveseat with his youngest.

Penny curled up on John's lap and stuck her thumb in her mouth. Diana found the DVD and started it, then sat next to Mary on the couch.

Mary fell asleep towards the end of the movie, being tired from therapy and school. She slept peacefully despite being propped up. She had her right hand limp in her lap and her left clutching the rabbit.

Diana waited for the movie to finish before getting up. It was still a bit early for bedtime, but she wasn't going to wake Mary. She carefully lifted the girl, groaning a bit, and brought her up to bed, tucking her in with her rabbit.

"Let's get your jammies on okay?" John said cheerily when the movie ended.

"But I didn't take a bath yet," Penny protested. "I want a bubble bath."
