"Julianna, you like oatmeal?" Doug asked as he stood at the stove filling bowls, hoping the answer was yes. The cereal was a staple in their house, especially during the colder months because it was relatively cheap, easy to make, and it was one thing all the kids would eat.

Julianna nodded. She'd had oatmeal a few times before, usually made by a babysitter. She climbed up to the table clumsily and waited to be served. She tried to mimic Leanna and Frankie as much as possible, trying to fit in.

Clare got about half way through her breakfast before running off to the bathroom. Doug just shook his head and sighed. The poor girl had been dealing with loose stools for years, sometimes upwards of a dozen times a day - sometimes accompanied by severe cramping and vomiting - but the pediatrician just dissmissed it as yet another food allergy. Finally last month they switched to a new pediatrician who agreed something more was probably going on and the girl was scheduled for some extensive testing in the coming weeks.

Frankie finished quickly and went back upstairs to brush her teeth and get her backpack. Evelyn ate half of her oatmeal before deciding she was full and playing with it.

Once Leanna was done, she joined her sister to brush her teeth. "She's so slow all the time!" She said referring to Julianna. "Clare will probably finish her food before she does."

Anna felt bad for her daughter, and hoped she wouldn't have too bad a day in the bathroom.

"I know. There's definitely something wrong with her," Frankie said. She had finished her teeth and was now pulling her hair up into a ponytail.

Clare returned to the table and tried to finish her breakfast, but she knew she was cutting it close and Frankie always got mad if she made them late. With a third of her oatmeal uneaten she gulped down her juice and ran upstairs to brush her teeth, though her sisters were in the way.

Evelyn screamed and slapped Emma. "Mama! Make her 'top!"

Evelyn slipped and cracked her head on the corner of the table when Emma hit her. There was no blood, and she probably wouldn't even end up with much of a bump, but she dropped to the floor and screamed bloody murder.

"Okay, pick one out," Doug said as he showed Julianna where the movies were just as Clare came dashing down the stairs and hastily threw her coat on.

Anna examined the toddler's head and kissed it. "Do you want some ice honey?" She asked seeing no serious harm. "And why don't we do something that doesn't involve running around. Why don't you go watch a movie with Julianna."

"Dad why does Julianna look so weird?" Leanna asked, having never seen anybody that looked like her cousin.

"Okay." Evelyn put her head on Anna's shoulder and snuggled into her, enjoying the snuggle time with her mother. Being one of five - now 6 - one-on-one time wasn't easy to come by.

"Leanna, don't say that," Doug ordered as he buckled Clare in. He got in and headed towards the school. "I know she looks a little different, but please, all of you, don't pick on her. She has a condition that makes her look like that, it also affects her heart and other things too."

By the time they got to school, all the other kids had gone inside. Doug checked the time and saw they were a few minutes late. "Okay, out you go," he said.

"Good job, Clare. You made us late again," Frankie snarled before getting out and slamming the door. She ran into the building, not waiting for her sisters like she usually did.

Evelyn sat on the couch and stared at Julianna, trying to figure out why this strange girl was here.
