Avishag was just one week past nine. She was a beautiful little girl with long dirty-blonde

The yellow blond haired man sat in the living room by the window looking out it for the last three hours waiting for his niece to arrive all dressed up in a suit and tie.

Avishag looked up at the social worker. Waiting at the door seemed like an eternity. What if they didn't want her? She didn't remember her uncle or her cousin that she apparently had. As far as she knew, she didn't have much family. Her father had been estranged from his because of marrying someone other than a Christian, and her mother's parents died before she was even born.

"No, I can call your office later, right?" he asked.

The social worker nodded. "Call me if you need anything. I do have to run though. Kids need home visits." She said before leaving.

Tom could see she wasn't going to shake his hand, but he refused to be left dry.

Ashivag cringed when she was made to shake hands with her cousin. It didn't feel right to her. She was raised not to make physical contact with people of the opposite sex unless they were family. She knew Tom was her cousin, but didn't quite feel like family around him yet, so in her mind, it felt kind of wrong.

Ralph smiled and took her bag from his shoulder and gave it to her.

"This what you want?" he asked her putting a hand on her shoulder.

Ashivag nodded and reached for her bag again. She held it close to her chest and started to unzip it until she was brought to the kitchen. Not wanting to disobey, she climbed into the kitchen chair and then opened her bag. She took out a stuffed sheep and held it close to her chest, inhaling the scent of her mother's perfume.

He smiled and pointed at the milk for her to drink.

He then took the plate to make her another sandwich and put more chips on it for her.

Ashivag shook her head.

Ralph sighed and saw she wasn't going to drink the milk.

Ashivag had just finished saying grace when her uncle spoke to her. She nodded and climbed off the chair, but instead of going to look for her room, she just sat on the living room floor behind the couch.

Ralph thought she had gone off to check out the house, so didn't go looking for her, but started to clean up the kitchen.

Tom looked across the hall into her bedroom, and didn't see her, so he went to the living room to see if he could try again to make introductions, but he couldn't find her.

Ashivag ended up crying herself to sleep behind the couch. Even as she slept she was completely silent. She hadn't slept in a few days, so this was from pure exhaustion. She didn't know what was to become of her now that she had no parents.

Eventually, Tom came out to the living room to turn on the television, and as he looked for the remote control, he found Ashivag behind the sofa sleeping.

"Poor little girl," he cooed at her.

Ashivag woke right up when Tom shook her. She jumped a little, not quite remembering where she was. She looked up at him and then looked back down, remembering everything now. She had

Tom smiled at her and helped her up.

Ashivag shook her head. She didn't really want to sleep. She had only fallen asleep because she was completely exhausted and it was moreso passing out than

Ralph smiled when he saw his little niece holding her sheep and blanket and tugging at his pant leg.

Ashivag had tears running down her face. She was humiliated. Her face was bright red. She didn't know what was going to happen. She'd never wet the bed before but saw one girl get smacked for it at the group home.

Ralph smiled and nodded.

"Well, no harm done, honey," he said.

Ashivag nodded. She opened her mouth like she was going to talk, but didn't. She wanted to say how she felt, but she kind of turned her words off as a coping method. She sighed and frowned, unable to communicate it seemed.

Ralph was a little concerned about her holding her sheep so closely as though it was protecting her, or maybe she was just afraid someone would steal it.

"You can keep the sheep with you," Ralph told her.
