I had a little shadow who went in and out with me

and everywhere my shadow went it seem to follow me.

Anyone else remember this rhyme?

I remember being scared out of my wits at the age of three and a half or so, because when I was in my crib at night I'd see shadows creeping along the wall. I knew enough about shadows at that age to know that they normally moved when I did. But these seemed to move of their own volition, and that caused me to scream in terror. I didn't realize at the time that what I was seeing were shadows cast by the headlights of cars outside, and that my shadow moved when the cars moved. I don't know how many nights I kept the family awake before I realized the shadows weren't monsters out to grab me.
