The feds can't do much about it really. They can stop parts of it because they have the power to prevent a state from taxing the sale of it and they can easily raid and arrest those people operating stores selling it because they are so visible. What they really can't do is prosecute all the individuals for having small quantities for their own use or having a few plants in their house for their own use. The problem the feds face there is the economy of scale working against them.

Even if CO and WA can't tax pot they will still save millions of dollars every year by not wasting police resources, court time and money to jail people for pot. Yes the feds could still arrest you for having a small bag of pot but honestly, they would have to send in federal agents to investigate, get search warrents through the federal court system, raid the offending house and process the people into federal court system and a federal correctional institute. The cost / benefit ratio would be rediculous and it would bankrupt the federal government.

This is just the start of the little snowball at the top of the mountain. Realistically the results of this are easily measureable. Any other state will be able to look at how much the prison budget goes down in those two states over say the next four years. They will also be looking at the amount of crime that may increase as a result of more people smoking pot or the decrease in crime because the police have more resources to concentrate on other crimes rather than on pot. They'll also be looking at how this frees up the court system and lowers costs there also. If the negatives are small or neglidgable and the savings are substantial what do you think other states are going to do down the road? Exactly!

it also means people who smoke pot may be more willing to cooperate in taking down drug cartels because they know on the state level they will not be prosecuted for having pot on them. ANd it means police can focus resources are shutting down such cartels rather than busting every 18 year old with a bong.

I actually worked this election as an election official. It was a very good and rewarding experience and I will probably do it again since I got paid for it. It was a long day, though. I was at the precinct at 6am, all day until the polls closed at 8pm and then another 2-1/2 hours bagging and tagging everything and sitting around the township hall while officials went through every step to make sure we did everything by the book. Best part was I wasn't sitting at home watching all those commercials for candidates running for office, and I didn't have to sit watching the TV for returns to come in. By the time I got home, it was mostly over and I couldn't have cared any less at that point, being super tired and having been around voters and other election officials all day! Glad it's over and I feel good about doing a patriotic duty even though many people don't care one way or another about elections. All I will say is, if you didn't vote, fine with me but don't piss and moan that you don't like the way something in the country is going! Even if you voted and your candidate didn't win, then you have a right to complain, but if you don't even vote at all, you have no business complaining!

Republic: A state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president

Democracy: A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members or state, typically though elected representatives.

So yeah we are a democratic republic. By the way those two words have nothing to do with democrats and republicans.. its not like republicans want a republic and democrats want a democracy and thats the difference..... we used to have a whig party.. they didn't want everyone to wear whigs.

Everyone has their own opinions and beliefs and political prefferences, and I don't want to get into it with anyone. All I will say is it is taking a long time for the country to get back on track with jobs, but look how bad things were? Yes, it's a slower process than many people would like but things are moving in a positive direction. I am one who dosn't think cutting medicare and social security and giving more tax cuts to the wealthy will help the low and middle class who are struggeling as it is.

I gladly accept another 4 years of barrack obama. I also voted to same sex marriage and legalizing marijuana in washington state. Both of which passed. Living with what i voted for is damned good!

Since Obama got into office I finished college, got accept to graduate school and was able to afford to attend thanks to federally funded student loans and grants. I was able to find a better job FOR THE GOVERNMENT and have doubled my salary and already received two promotions w/ nice pay raises.

I have improved my credit and been able to purchase a brand new 2012 suv, I was able to purchase property and take vacations multiple times a year.

When bush was president I was paying 4.50 and more a gallon for gas. Now i pay 3.39 a gallon for gas, thats over a dollar less. When bush was president i qualified for fewer student loans, and there were fewer student loan repayment options open to me. When bush was president I lived in fear that as a woman my right to have power over my own body could be stripped from me.

What please, whatever me all you want.

I was talking at work with a coworker and what amazes me the most is when presented with scientific fact, proven with math and science and cold hard tangible truth, some people simply will not allow themselves to accept it, but rather continue to believe the lies they are told.... the reason Romney and Ryan were so 'shell shocked' when they lost was because their own people were lying to them this entire year about the real statistical truth about their 'chances' of winning.... because there was never any chance.... and when people were told outright "no thats a lie" for example when GM called out romney and say none of that is true and here is hte proof.... for some reason people just turned a blind eye...

I guess its the same way some people insist the holocaust never happened.... despite mountains of proof they are insistant its all a lie.

And to anyone accusing the president of being a Socialist, I ask you this: How many industries has he nationalized? Hint: Healthcare is not one of them.

As a unabashed liberal, progressive, whatever label you choose, I grudgingly voted for B.O. because the alternative was simply too nebulous. Romney tacked WAY to the right to win the primaries, and then proceeded to flip-flop on every single major policy he claimed he stood for months earlier, even being audacious enough to reverse positions within hours or days. It was so obvious to the American people that the man has no principles whatsoever; he will say and do anything it takes to get elected.

Obama is too conservative for my tastes; he's continued Bush's secrecy with regards to torture, rendition, and drone attacks, plus his ordered assassination of Osama Bin Laden was a blatant violation of the Geneva conventions which the US is a signee and agreed to uphold. Some people love to hate on Obama for trying to protect social programs for the poor and elderly members of our society, but the bottom line is he's still under the thumb of the US Military Industrial Complex, and powerful multinational corporations who benefit from massive government subsidies (aka corporate welfare) while flouting our tax laws---both drain so much more money from taxpayers than social programs, yet I never hear so-called fiscal conservatives complain about out of control military spending or using public funds to subsidize private corporations who owe no allegiance to the USA.

Society works best when we cooperate; we should be emulating European style economies that provide a generous social safety net in exchange for higher taxes. Countries like Sweden provide its citizens with better education and healthcare than the US; one need only look at the rates of infant mortality, prenatal care, access to higher education, and overall happiness of its populace to see just how backward and inefficient the United States' economic system is.

Fortunately, the demographics are steadily shifting away from the xenophobic WASP brigade of regressive taxation, lax environmental and business regulation, and fuzzy accounting gimmicks that have been the totality of conservative policy for the past 30 years. We've tried it, it doesn't work, now it's time to leave the trickle-down bullshit in the dustbin of history and rebuild this country back into something like the one the rest of the world used to admire and respect.
