Incontinence And Flying

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the response. Definitely good advice. My problem is when I travel people want to stay and talk in the line and then politely wait for me once they are through. Luckily I have not been outed yet. I am a pastor so it is usually parishioners or friends or family I travel with.

Though flying solo I have gotten patted down, had to explain. Oddly enough they have never taken my diapers out of my bag when searching it. I do triple check my bag to make sure there are no liquids or sharp objects.

One weird trip though... I had forgotten to throw out my black plastic bag with a dirty diaper in it... No flags, no stops, nothing. Normally I throw away my diaper garbage bag in the hotel dumpster in the early morning. That day I had to stay a day later and forgot that I placed one diaper in there the night before.... Embarrassed, but Again I was not stopped.

Do not think this really counts but my last set of flights was diapered and had no problem besides having to change in the plane..... But that was 2008 coming back from Iraq to Germany and then back to the great USA..

I travel about 75% of the year and fly all around the world.  I wear diapers 24/7, thick Rearz diapers, and I have only been pulled aside and privately screened in a separate room three times.  Two of those times my diaper was fairly full.  That is less than one percent of my flying experiences.  All three times the security agents were professional and polite.

Changing on a plane absolutely is not fun.  Just not a lot of room and the small trash receptables definately do not fit an adult sized diaper very well.

I’m curious. I’ve read about wet diapers being flagged by body scanners, and sometimes being considered a liquid. Has this happened to people here?

I've never worn through security, but for some reason twice in the last three trips something around my crotch was flagged and I ended up being felt up my a security guard.

Once I changed into a diaper on the other side of security.

Wet diapers are flagged by the body scanner but they have to be heavily saturated.  One wetting and you are fine and will clear everytime.  The rule of thumb for me is to change before leaving for the airport and I have no problems.  The few times I have been flagged were because I did not have time to change before catching my flight or I was in a rush and just did not think about it.

No, they absolutely do not consider your diaper as a liquid at least in my experiences.  Once they see you are in a diaper they pat you down and send you on your way to your flight with no problems.  I have never been asked to change into a clean diaper or told to take my diaper off.  About the worse that will happen is you will be asked to pull your pants down so they can verify you are indeed wearing a diaper.

Nice to know. I’ve read a few new stories over the past couple years to the contrary, and glad to know they are not representative.

I have found that diapers confuse TSA agents sometimes.  I think that is why in the past people were forced to do some strange and weird things when it comes to their diapers and airport security. This put TSA under a lot of scrutiny and I think that they received some sensitivity training in regards to a passenger who is wearing diapers.

A lot of TSA agents still are not sure what to do when they see me in diapers.  Almost always your average screener has had to call for a supervisor to clear me when the body scanner has flagged me and they have determined I am wearing a diaper. With that said, they certainly are very respectful and are very sensitive. I have actually had TSA officers ask me how have I been screened in the past.

I have also noticed that sometimes the supervisor is escorted with several agents and I can only assume this is because they are training them on how to deal with a passenger that is wearing diapers. Lastly, they act no differently if you are wearing a pink diaper with princesses on it or just a plain white medical diaper.  Their level of professionalism remained the same although one time I had one young TSA agent that seemed flabbergasted by me a wearing pink diaper.

MarkSmith - you have valid points.  Most of the TSA I have dealt with are very professional and understand the need for a diaper.  I have been requested many times for both a visual as well as a change of diaper.  Some are better than others.  Just hold you ground, keep you head up and understand it is a need you have.  If you are confident and not skiddish, this will mean a lot to most trained people.  They are looking for those that freak out or act odd.

I do carry a TSA card that says I have incontinence.  Some get it, some look at me like - what is that word?  Most times they get it and just pass me along.

You will not be first nor the last more than likely to been seen or asked.  Just be confident.

I am curious, if you are requested to change your diaper how does that work exactly?  Do you just change it in the private screening room or do you have to exit security and come back?

I was allowed privacy in the room in PHX and was asked to leave the diaper on the table for examination.  They said it showed up due to the SAP/Wetness making it alert as possible plastic explosives.  Another time in Reno, I was running late and did not have a spare to change into.  I was searched and they were ready to let me go on, when the Director came in.  He was very uneducated in handling of this situation.  He called the cops over and they all escorted me back out to the counter of the airlines, they called back my bag from the plane, I had to open it and take out a diaper, then let them re-check the bag.  The Director escorted me to the bathroom outside of security and left to change.  He was waiting on the other side of the screening area after my second run through.  The cops seemed really disinterested in the mess this guy was making of the situation and were very polite.  I did issue a dispute with the TSA over his handling of it.

As far as federal law enforcement agencies go, TSA isn't exactly the cream of the crop. And they also have a high turn over rate, so it is hardly surprising if they act like they have never seen a diaper before cause they probably haven't. With that said, I've never had a negative experience when they saw a diaper on me or in my bag. I've had some confused people wonder where the baby was, and they just never got it when I said there wasn't one, but never anything disrespectful.

How would you like to be the low man on the totum pole and have to examine someone else's used diapers for explosives?  Ewwww!  I liken that to the people at ColoGuard who have to go through and screen all those stool samples sent in to check for colon cancer!

I've said it before that TSA can be really intrusive at times.  I don't fly often anymore, but last year I had absolutly no problem with the screening in spite of the metal hardwear in my knee.  They didn't even want to see my medical card.  I didn't wear diapers and they did confiscate my friend's full size toothpaste though.  I know people will say that screening doesn't catch everything.  Personally, I can put up with removing my shoes and belt if it even helps catch one person trying to sneak on board my flight with bad intentions!  Better that I'm a little put out through screening than dead among wreckage over some mountian or ocean!  I'm not so high and mighty that I have to complain and scream my head off over a little inconvienience!

Sure, some things are really stressful but I can't understand some people in this day and age, especially those who complain about every little thing and those who use tech devises for everything!  "Gee, there is a hurricane and tornado, 120 mile an hour winds, 20 inches of snow fall and ice everywhere.  How dare they cancle my flight!  That's terrible and unheard of!  I have to get to Disney World for my vacation!"  I understand their frustration, but for God's sake, don't they realize planes can't fly in that kind of weather?  Do they really think the airlines want to lose all that money by canceling a flight and refunding tickets or putting people up overnight in some situations?  No, they would rather take a chance on dying in a plane crash along with hundreds of other people!  Since the beginning of flight, it has always been contingent on weather conditions.

With that said, I do take issue sometimes with some idiotic things airlines do.  Dragging a doctor off the flight, banging him around because they over booked his flight.  Making someone get off the plane because her baby was taking up a seat, even though the mother bought and paid for that seat.  Last night on the news a flight attendant forced a woman to put her dog (small puppy) in the overhead compartment!  The poor 8 month old puppy didn't survive the flight!  The airline is all apologetic and stated that never should have happened.  Damn right it never should have happened but that won't bring that little puppy back!  When you talk about the TSA needing more training and compassion, I agree but they are trying to save lives and prevent terrorists from blowing up your plane.  Flight attendants are there to help you during your flight, not be the high and almighty boss who can do as they please if they just don't like something.  I don't care if they did sell one extra seat they didn't have available.  If a woman bought and paid for a ticket for her one year old, the flight attendant has no right to force her to hold her kid on her lap just so they can make more money by selling that seat to someone else.  If a small puppy in a small carry on pet contanier was not allowed to ride in the main body of the airplane, it never should have been allowed on in the first place.  After the fact is no time to insist it be placed in the overhead compartment by a flight attendant who was acting on her own.  Poor training by the airline and I hope they get their ass sued off and lose a lot of business for their actions (repeated actions since the news said that airline has had twice the number of pet deaths than any other airline).  By the way, United has said they take full responsibility for what happened to that puppy and said it never should have happened.  Fine.  Did they fire that flight attendant?  Have they immediately put in place a new training program?  Have they returned that passenger's airline fares, monetarily compensated her for the loss of her dog and pain and suffering due to the stupidity of their flight attendant who did not follow the apparent rules of the airline?

I pushed the envolope with my diaper today while going through security.  My diaper had two full wettings and a lot of dribbles.  I was wearing an ABU Simple and the only thing flagged was my right pant leg at my ankle.  I was not even wearing my typical layering as all of my fixing pants and onesies were dirty.  I know that in the past a diaper sag is not the thing to go through security with and my layers help out with that.

Honestly it almost takes wearing your overnight diaper filled to capacity for the scanner to flag your diaper area in my experience.  In my honest opinion if you are in a dry diaper you should never be fearful of wearing a diaper through airport security.
